Finding Hatch Parts...
Your going to find alot of parts stores will confuse your '89 hatch with a '89 3 door coupe, parts will not interchange. Lie to the guys and ask for 1984 GL Parts. 1984 there was only EA81's, and all the parts interchange with your '89. You should then have no problems. -Brian

Turbo brat?
Not unless you are really good with fabrication. Its possible, but not easy. Find a EA81. The motor in the car you listed is a EA82.

SHUT UP! Thanks. That only further proves my point. And I was using the EA81 as refference. Is that 209lbs wet or dry? I dont feel like pulling my FSM out, but just wanted to elaborate at just how light our vehicles are. And it wont take much to push you into another vehicle. I'll make sure to give you plenty of room if I ever see you on the road. As stated before. Plenty of people out there have towed with their subaru's. I expect more people to reply with "Ive done it, ive never wrecked" than those with common sence who will say "read your manual... what does it say?" BTW, thanks Milesfox for that quote. So yeah, unless its a lawn mower or a dirt bike... i wouldnt risk towing it. And when I say lawn mower, i mean like a riding lawn mower. -Brian

Yeah i knew it was around 200lbs off the top of my head. Rick came through and verified by looking it up for me in the FSM. 1983 EA81 model. Im sure the EA82 is slightly heavier, but not by much. And im not an employee. Im just a regular member as you are, just been here for a very long time. Ive never towed anything with my subaru. Im too much of a "scardy cat" as some would say. I load Skid Steers. Scissor lifts. Smaller John Deere tractors. My previous position before a mechanic was a Lead Yardman (foreman) for United Rentals. Ive been trained on how to inspect, load, operate and safely manouver trailers loaded and empty. You should see some of the 1/2 ton & 3/4 ton trucks Ive had to deny service too. There's no way in hell I would allow a Subaru to tow anything out of our yard... not even a 13hp tiller on a small utility trailer.

towing
This is the Older Generation Forum. If you want a subaru that can tow, buy a forester, outback or even an impreza. Im qualified as an uber towing expert becuase its part of my field. I am a heavy equipment mechanic, and as such Ive been trained how to propperly load trailers with equipment and items. Your right, a 2000lb trailer shouldnt have the tongue wieght of more than 200lbs, however your EA81 or EA82 full of fluids wieghs in at 227lbs so you are already canceling out most of the wieght over your drive wheels. Next time you are towing something... try and come to a sudden stop. See what happens. Lets hope you dont have to steer to avoid hitting something (someone). -Brian p.s. unless youve converted to rear disk's... your brakes suck.

I wouldnt tow anything but a lawn mower with a Subaru. 1) The Brakes on your Subaru suck. They do a good job stopping your wagon, but anything past that is asking for trouble. 2) They are FWD Vehicles. You put tongue wieght on the rear end, you remove wieght from the front where your drive axle is... increasing understeer and decreasing braking performance. I know alot of people are going to reply to this with "Your wrong, I've towed...." or "I hauled ______ and had no problems." etc. Regardless, its not safe, and I wouldnt suggest it. -Brian

Documented: The 1970 FF-1 Project car...
There's no replacement for Displacement. I think all the time and effort spent on the 1100 would be better served on a 1600.

I've got a little fessin' up to do.
There are a couple lines. What you cant see is the uphill angle that is at... and the lines both involve steps that are about as tall as the brats bumper. Anyhow, i know they arent rock crawlers. Which is why i had to give up on em. Until I move to a place with mud and tree's

Zap, i have some confessing to do myself. Since I got the toyota, ive been talkin sh%t about subaru's off-road. I dont have a lifted to bring me back to the light, but I keep telling Jibs he cant follow me anymore. Im sure he'll try, and maybe he'll make a believer out of me yet. But its trails like this that make me worried: -Brian

Help me fix my Legacy: Overheating, blowing coolant lines, ongoing problem.
Thanks guys. Im convinced my head gasket is leaking. I just gotta find time and money to repair it. Well, money isnt as big a concern as time. I cant seem to find a gasket set local, and Im lookin at a week if not longer to get one to me. Woulda loved to have it this weekend so I can make use of this 4 day weekend, but i guess thats not going to work. Im going to be getting a replacement coolant tank and install that to get the car back on the road. Once I have my gasket set I'll tear the motor and go through it. Subaruparts.com doesnt list a t-belt set for the legacy. Anyone have any good vendors out there that supplies a complete kit? belt, idlers etc... Might as well do that while im in there. -Brian

When you say Almost and Exactly in the same sentance... what is you mean? Your running a EJ22T as well?

Help me fix my Legacy: Overheating, blowing coolant lines, ongoing problem.
Im a heavy equipment mechanic, i deal with coolant on a daily basis. I can identify the smell of antifreeze, and exhaust in my coolant. I also have a HC tester at my disposal. I guess i've just been blind to the whole ordeal. Usually, when head gaskets blow you burn coolant. Or your car overheats even with a full radiator. And there is almost always a miss-fire on the dead cylinder. However my car runs great. Never runs past normal on the temp gauge... until the coolant is gone. And it doesnt burn coolant as that would/should show out the tailpipe. So I've just been naive about the whole thing and hoping it was just something stupid. Looks like I got a weekend full of work ahead of me :-\

Raveen, the origin of this post is much more than "how to determine wether i have a blown headgasket" It started off with blowing coolant lines left and right. After blowing my heater core. Now my tank is split, and its obvious it was under pressure cause of the bowing involved. Replacing the part and continuing on will not solve my problem... the next thing to blow will be my radiator, or another hose. I guess Im just going to do the gaskets and be done with it.

Whats a ROL head set? And I'd love to have you work on my heads, but I dont have an extra grand to drop. I dont even know how im going to come up with the $300+ to do the gaskets (and timing belts cause im not pulling the motor again after this)

cant do a coolant pressure test if my coolant tank is split. That would give me bad readings. And if compression is making it past the gasket into my coolant, wouldnt that give me a low reading on that cylinder? Not sure why a compression test wouldn't work.

Help me fix my Legacy: Overheating, blowing coolant lines, ongoing problem.
No, wondering if the gasket kit SubaruParts.com is a SOA kit or what? And yeah, LegacyCentral.org confirmed the EJ22T is a different block than EJ22 and needs a different gasket. Im also wondering, if the EJ22 doesnt show typical symptoms like EA's when they blow, can I still determine with a compression tester? I mean, a leak will still show a weak cylinder am I wrong? I just wanna be absolutly sure before I go and drop $300 on this job. -Brian

Check wheel offsets!
I have a EA82 wagon wheel on the front of my '79 and it rubs the caliper. So yeah, there are differences. Its also known that the EA81 wagon wheel wont clear a EA82 caliper either. Hope these enkies I got will work. -Brian

Well Napa wants $221 and thats just a head gasket kit. Subaru Parts has the entire engine gasket kit for $218. Anyone know what gaskets they use? SOA parts?

turbo in a hatch???? how bout it?
The EA82 is not much better than the EA81. It's actually alittle less dependable than the EA81, but the turbo on the EA82 helps it make a tad more power. Alot of people here go for the more dependable EJ22 swap's. I think they fit alittle better, they are more reliable and they definatly make more power. But since you already have a complete Turbo EA82 parts car, this maybe a fun project and you could be the first to pull it off.
