My 84 wagon with 225,4** miles on it, just did a tune-up all the usual parts plus fuel pump, and coil and checked timing and compression. so this is what it is doing: starts up fine go and drive it at first it dies but will start right up dies while driving fires back up on its own, then dies again eventually gets harder to start but none the less it does then dies and won't start back up so puul off the side of the road i try to restart but won't go sit for about a minute with key on then starts dies again do this again starts up. ok so i deside to take side streets home in case it dies again, goes the rest of the way home without problems. Now i drove it to work that morning without problems it did all this on the way home from work which is about 9 miles one way. i have had this car for about a month now first 2 weeks no problems then it started about 2 weeks ago but only once in awhile but only once or twice now its like i described above also when i first got it i ranfuel system cleaner through it for the first 2 or 3 tank fulls because it has been sitting for awhile before i bought it plus my gas milage has been from 17 to 20 mpg, not sure if its related. i have thought about replacing the distributor and running new igntion wires( switch to coil then dist., sparkplug wires already done). so any suggestions where to look next, electrical or fuel???????? has anybody ever had this problem????? thanks, Chaz oh, btw i'm not sure if this has anything to do with it but it seems like this is only untill it gets thoroughly warmed up. this only has happened during the first mile or so, so i don't know if this has anything to do with it. but then again i have only been driving it mostly to work no major trips yet other then a couple of 30 mile oneway to my parents without problems. but it is sperratic.

Okay, i hope this isn't to dumb of a question but i haven't seen it posted here yet. i read in other web sites about waterproofing for stream fording and they talk about venting all your breathers. so are guys doing something to your tranny dipstick and breather, diff breathers and what about the oil fill tube, dip stick and such for the engine, i do realize that the engine oil fill tube has a rubber seal under it but is it enough???

If its a manuel transmission there would be a sticker on right side of your 4wd shifter lever that would say 4hi and 4lo. if you don't have a sticker then pull up on leverif you have hi/lo you will be able to pull up 2 clicks (it really doesn't go click but you can feel it but you can tell there are two postions) if not there will only be an in/out of 4wd plus you have a light that comes on your instrument cluster stating you are in 4wd and if you hi/lo you will have 2 lights one will come on for 4wd and another that says lo. If its an automatic you only will have 4hi.

nice looking ride. you going to make a sleeper out of it??? -
yes you will need the headlight buckets and rings, side marker lights at least the headlight pigtails, your side marker light soket will snap into the new side marker light housing so you don't need to get that wiring pigtail. the center grille itself is the same but you will need the part under the headlight and next to the high beam light is a plastic filler strip that goes betwwen it and the grille, you will need this also. if there is a complete harness for just the haedlight i would get, it looked like they just went into the main front harness so i cut off the part i needed and splised in the pigtails that i cut off into my harness ,took some time but wasn't hard if you know how to do basic wiring.

new addition to the family
chazmataz replied to chazmataz's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
no, the tires that came on it we're good but two of them we're on some 13" alloy wheels and the other two we're on the white spoke wagon wheel which i like better. so now as you can see all four are the white spoke wheels, these wheels and tires i had laying around from my 86' wagon that i lifted and put 15" wheels and tires on. -
cut out at speed and idle problems
chazmataz replied to chazmataz's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
yeah mine only seem to do it when it was cold but the RPMs we're lower mostly at cruising speed. i two have thought about the coil and went and bought one to go with my tune up but i haven't been able to drive it since. the previous owner messed up the sparkplug threads, so now i can't keep one of my plugs in to drive it so now i have to pull the head and fix that too. -
I have a 86' GL wagon and did everything i could do to get better lights out of the original GL lights andnothing worked, i have went through and did a search of past post on the forum and found that other GL owners also complained about the poor lighting of the GL style headlights. About a year ago i added an 89' DL wagon to the family and noticed an improvement in lighting with it so about 3months ago i converted my 86 GL wagon over to the DL headlight system that i got out of a JY and put halogen headlamps in and yes there is an enormous improvement in light from the GL to the DL light systems. As far as driving on country roads at night watching out for deer, i have done enough of it with my GL and i scares the hell out of me with my old headlights but with the 4 light system from the DL i'm not worried at all and i don't have to drive like a grandma. To make a long story short i would do it, you will like the improvement its like day and night difference between the two.

here is my new subaru family addition, its 84' wgn 4x4, 4spd D/R, got 225,000 miles on it picked it up for $100 running and driving. since i got it 3 weeks ago i've had to put 2 front hubs, a brake caliper bracket, 2 front axles, thermo sensor and the tune up parts. i found a whole grille and front bumper and 2 front fenders that are on it in the picture and i put on the biggest 13" traction tires i could get my hands on, too. so afr i have put another $430 in to it. still needs sunroof seals and latch in terior is a little rough but it did run pretty good. this is going to be my daily driver with a few local mudhole tours invovled when found. as you can see now by the pictures its been testing the local mudholes out already. here is a link to my photo gallery if you want to see bigger pics http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/photos/showgallery.php?cat=500&ppuser=9402

cut out at speed and idle problems
chazmataz replied to chazmataz's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
i didn't check it during the tune up but i did replace the coil and i'm going to change the fuel pump to eliminate any possible starvation issues plus both fuel filters they look pretty old i didn't get a chance to due those filters yet just the others and plugs, wires, cap, rotor, etc. and compression test. -
cut out at speed and idle problems
chazmataz replied to chazmataz's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
ok, i know its not a fusible link, it doesn't cut the whole car off, electrical system is still functioning and i'm not replacing anything to get it going again. does the EA81 have a throttle postioning sensor???? i thought those we're only on fuel injection not carb. cars and if they had a throttle postioning sensor then we couldn't put on weber carbs. on our cars either. if i'm wrong please correct me on this. -
has anyone experienced a problem that is speratic of the engine just shutting down at speed and then restarting itself in a split second, it got worst today and then it started to not idle at a stop this all started to happen in the last week. i've only had this car for 3 weeks now but this is annoying. this is in an 84' wagon 4x4 with 4spd d/r. thanks, Chaz
