New GL10, Shooting for high 14's?
Turbone replied to crazy_squirrels's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Ah, but have you ever built one and driven it? Take your spare engine and go completly through it. If you have the time and $, put new bearings and rings in it. Dont have to be fnacy expensive one, stock will work. Get the heads milled, but dont over do it. Otherwise you will have to much compression and HG issues. Get the valves and guides done. Polish the intake ports if you want. New parts are a must. Get a new WP, OP, new timing belts and tenshioners. Re-seal the complete engine. I use a K&N drop in filter, it works great. Upgrade the coil to a MSD. I now run NGK Iridium plugs. Pricey, but they work. As long as you re-seal the engine, you can run synthetic (like me). Open the exhaust up. I have 2.5in from the DP back. Make sure the turbo has no shaft play. It safe to boost up to 12-12psi. If you do so, install a IC. A TD04 is a nice upgrade but it spools up slower and the rpm's need to be higher. My RX is putting out 130bhp. Thats 100hp to the wheels and 106tq. I dont know if I want to drag race it, the launches are to harsh with fulltime 4wd. My tranny is the weak point now. Do all this and be conservative with the power upgrades and you might hit the 14's. If you dont mind changing engines like a NHRA mech, go with a SPFI block and have fun! -
Clutch cable replacement
Turbone replied to REXSPEEDWORTHY's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
How flexible are you? The hard part is getting under the dash to remove and install the cable end to the clutch bracket assembly. Theres a clip that holds the cable end, cant remember if its a bolt or screw. After thats removed just pull it out of the firewall from the engine compartment, remove from clutch fork then install in reverse order. -
Are they for a 2wd or 4wd? Theres a difference and finding front struts for a 4wd are getting harder to find. All the ones I have found on Ebay are 2wd. I have had 2 orders cancelled in a week. One for KYB's and the last one for Sach's. I'm calling my Dealer today to see if he has OEM ones.

You are correct. One is a right and the other a left.

I believe there are 2 main harness connections for the engine, down along side the drivers side frame rail or on top of the tranny. Its been a while since I worked on a XT. But to pull the engine, these needed to be disconnected. I had a problem like this once when I was doing multiple swaps on my RX and I finally discovered that I didnt have the plugs tightly connected.

EA82T Up-pipe size?
Turbone replied to crazy_squirrels's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I wouldnt say it was EA81T specific. It could be a JDM up-pipe. Maybe a little more research into the JDM crate engines will reveal more info? There might be some on Ebay right now. -
EA82T Up-pipe size?
Turbone replied to crazy_squirrels's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I need to know the year and whether its 2wd or 4wd. I have 8 listings for a turbo mid-pipe :-p The up-pipe I currently have on my RX has the O2 sensor. It might have come off of a JDM crate engine that was in one of my old EA81T Coupes. I removed it when I upgraded everything to EA82T parts. Its working fine for me at the moment, seeing how my DP has no O2 sensor. -
Good to see its almost done Even I would like something like that. I like to recline once in a while, take a nap.

EA82T Up-pipe size?
Turbone replied to crazy_squirrels's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
My parts book shows the same part # for 86/87. It also includes a new part # for 87/88, superceding 86. The GL XT didnt get the newer part # till 87. None of them show the O2 sensor in the up pipe. I dont have a parts book for the EA81's. -
EA82T Up-pipe size?
Turbone replied to crazy_squirrels's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
EA81T up pipe has the O2 sensor. EA82T has the O2 sensor in the DP. -
You better keep him for a back up if you plan on buying a SVX. Trust me, I own a few of them

My Day!! Warning Carter Subaru
Turbone replied to xoomer's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Only if I was a witness. Otherwise your on your own. Personally, I would count my blessings and walk away from it. They have been getting bad press for a couple of years now. If they cant figure out why people get pissed off when dealing with them, they need to fire everyone that works in a managerial position there. -
Anyone have experience with Sachs?
Turbone replied to Turbone's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
KYB for the front of a 4wd EA82 is almost impossible to find. The one I did find, on Ebay, they wanted $98 Monroe and Gabriel just wont cut it, especially when I will be RallyX'n. The Sach's were available for 4wd and they only wanted $66ea, with free shipping with any order over $55. Guess I'll be giving a review in a few weeks. -
I know they make a pretty good clutch, but I'm looking at some front struts from them. Anyone ever use thier suspension parts?

Subaru p0rn? A little hint to folks that browse at work....always delete your browser history when you log off.

Wow, thats the cleanest one I've seen yet. Great score Just over 31K too Good thing it came west a year after it was new. Otherwise it would be a rust bucket. May I ask what you paid?

Turbone replied to audio_file's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
If you do decide to up the boost, make sure you get a good boost controller. I bought one off Ebay that was cheap and paid the consequences It was sure fun at 12lbs tho :-p -
My Day!! Warning Carter Subaru
Turbone replied to xoomer's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I suppose you didnt do a search or research anything about Carter? You could even asked Russ about them. Could have asked here even before going. Its common knowledge to most of the Subaru community in Puget Sound that they suck badly. And per XT6.net, how do you know that the rad you ordered was for a XT6? Its a good thing you didnt get it. Try returning that to them. -
New to me 87 RX (horay!)
Turbone replied to audio_file's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Anything over 7psi is over for a EA82T. I blew the ring landings off of my last one at 12psi, Did the fuel light come on when you were out of gas? -
New to me 87 RX (horay!)
Turbone replied to audio_file's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Sounds like the the thermostat is out of whack. Get a OEM replacement for it and I suggest asap. Overheating will kill the EA82T, that and overboosting I'm one of those that have been thru a few engines in my RX :-\
