Just bought an 84 Turbo BRAT
Turbone replied to Scott F's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
The year turbo engine you have is the first model imported to the US. And probably the most difficult one to work on for a first time Subaru owner. There are several here that have owned this model/engine and some have extra parts or complete engines. One of the biggest issues is back in 84 the Dealers did a recall to upgrade the turbo to add watercooling. Look at the thermostat housing to see if there is a water line on the bottom right front that goes back to the turbo. This will tell you if its been upgraded or not. If not, its not that hard to upgrade the entire turbo system to a watercooled system. Also, the tranny they used (3AT) are known for being gutless and unreliable. Theres a upgrade for this also, but a little more involved. Use the search function here for 5spd swap. Welcome to the USC and the Board, hope you enjoy your Brat. -

Suggested Spark Plugs, Oil and filters
Turbone replied to nathan.chase's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Fram sucks big time. Almost all the cars I see in the PAP here that died from a engine problems have a Fram filter on them. I have see the cut aways on the filters and they are built very cheaply, even the double guard. For $6 you can get a Purolator. -
It's Almost DONE!!! WOOHOO!!!!!

The only thing I can see wrong here is that you put the drum brakes back on:confused: Other than that, you should have a trouble free ride for lots of miles/years to come. -
Yeah, once I got down to Burnett for gas I just decided to head home. Hopefully next time I'll leave the house with the right keys:rolleyes: Now I need to get a new gas cap:-p

Turbone replied to samneric's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
You answered your own question here. As for a hole being at the bottom corner of the WS opening, I believe ther is, dont ask me why tho but I think its supposed to drain outside of the cabin. -
help with a couple items please.

Yellow to the Neg and black to the Pos(thats the way it is on my 86 Wagon). I assume the vac hoses go one to the manifold and the other to the carb. Anyone else can feel free to correct me. -
I want to. But wether I can make it or not will be up to a couple factors:rolleyes: I'll let you know.

Take a 2x4, make sure its long enough to go across to both fenders and then secure a chain to the hoist points and across the 2x4. Make sure to remove the motor mount bolts. The power steering hoses will need to be disconnected, this is the messy part. Might be a good idea to have a bucket handy. Remove the tierod ends from the hubs and the x-member should be ready to drop. You can remove the steering rack when you have the x-member removed.
