  2. Wow great timing, I read your tale of woe with great interest, as I am about to buy a new disty for my 84 brat or sell it, I have this issue where it will not start, then start, then not..........yada yada, new plugs, new wires, new cap, new rotor, coil good, new battery.I have even hot wired it from under the hood, to eliminate the ig switch and wiring. Some times it will start just as I give up and let the key snap back from start to on, or if under the hood disconnect the jumper wire from the starter. I am afraid to drive any place and shut it off! Tach is not jumpy, but was when I bought it, switched out the disty at that time from a hitachy to nippond, started good for quite a few years, then this started, thankfully its not a daily driver, but I do like to drive it, or did, I am about to sell it if this continues. These ignition systems are not that complex, so what do the experts say/do?.....................G
  3. http://thebratpen.com/?p=6, 90 leg just keeps on rolling.............G
  4. 1st of all, I AM NOT an expert,:-\ I did my first auto tranny swap in my driveway on an SVX. 4 jackstands, searsjack no adapter,a sissor type jack for the rear of the tranny, basic hand tools, those racheting tydowns, some bungee cords, assorted lengths of 2x4s, some plywood cause the driveway is gravel. Be sure to drain both tranny and FRONT diff, as I forgot and turned tranny on its side spilling that nasty stuff into the gravel:eek: getting to smell it for the rest of the job. All info in previous post are correct, patience and being careful are your friends, this is not an easy job but its not to bad either, cheers:)......G
  5. After doing all this could a bad ditsy bushing give false diagnosis either good or bad? Just wondering cause I have an 84brat that is a real BRAT for starting then not starting then starting then not.........you get the idea, I plan on replacing the disty as a last straw fix.............G
  6. The Subaru SVX World Network - Powered by vBulletin This is the BEST place on the web for info on these cars, welcome to the SVX they are wonderful and finicky and troublesome and beautiful and expensive and weird and well you get the idea..................G
  7. Type: Driveway What: Anything thats broken, or needs maintaned. Subarus, motorcycles, household appliances How long: A l o n g time 40yrs Other skills: The best line cook I've ever seen:Flame: not to bad at bodywork and painting, (don't like it so much).......... Good Day.G
  8. Heres my idea, the distributor itself, does your tach ever jump? All those symptoms point to a worn disty bushing, I am living your story to a T, all thats left to try for me is replacing the dist, but its to cold at this time to do. Good luck winning that problem, cheers..............G:headbang:
  9. I like the fact that we can and will admit to the errors we have/will made so others can benefit and learn, we are a fine bunch of subee mechanics, Good day all........G
  10. o2 sensors are not that bad to change, slop them up with pb blaster ahead of time, it took me about an hour to unhook them from the wiring, that was the hard part, the unbolting was cake, 600 sound abit high for that job but thats where dealers make money, my 2cent............G
  11. Finished a 4.44 swap into the SVX, all back together and running, still need to test drive, but up on jack stands all is well, wheww glad thats over.......G
  12. The bike will fit, the tailgate will need to be open, or you will have to lift the back of the bike up to close:eek:, sounds like a bummer. I have hauled a TT500 in a first gen brat many times, never been stopped for the plate problem. If the seats are in you may be able to put the front wheel between them as I have, so the brat is like the minimum motorcycle hauler but they do look cool in there............G
  13. ???? was that noise there before the clutch job? If not then I would talk to that mechanic to see if he/she has any suggestions. Does sound like an cv joint as others have said, but why just after a clutch job? Good luck with it...G
  14. quick thought here, sounds like loose/bad belt, higher rpm helps it grab, don't know what else could cause that, loose connector, bad ground?........G
  15. 92 SVX tranny swap, stock to 96outback, gosh that thing looks heavy, exhaust out driveline out, now the fun part:eek:.........G
  16. Bent wheel? Loose control arm? Loose lugnuts?, Thats all I can suggest...G
  17. NO one has mentioned the fact that this mechanic did a very complete clutch job, this means if your a good clutch driver you should not have a single clutch problem for 100k, hopefully the engine/tranny is up to the task, what am I saying this is a SUBARU of course it'll be fine. Drive on!........G
  18. Excellent info and great timing Guys, newbee to auto trannys and about to swap an SVX tranny this board ..................ROCKS:banana:. Thanks ....G
  19. I used a 1/2 craftsman rachet and floor jack , on my legacy I also used a 3inch extension with a large pipe wrench on the extension a floor jack on the rachet lifting the rear of the car off the ground. now staying out of harms way i had to use my foot on the pipe wrench and pushh untill the plug let loose, geeeesh that was tight, the extension ended up twisted, just snug it up on reinstall....G
  20. I made my own from napa fusible link wire and spade connectors, should have different sizes of the wire for your application............G
  21. 84Brat, new cap, rotor, plug wires, no more starting woes:banana:, thought I needed a new disty..................G
  22. My clutch smells when I drive up my ramps in the driveway:lol:, just love that smell:banana:..............G
  23. If you've done an auto you can do a standard, watch the clutch fork and the wire loom in its vicinity, as I had my tranny dangling from that loom with the fork grabbing it, linkage is cake just 2 bolts to undo if I remember correctly. I used some tydowns bolted to the srut towers as a 2nd set of hands to hold while repostioning the jack. Do it just for the satisfaction of doing it and saving some cash, enjoy..........G
  24. Last resort replace the valve (not hard.....just messy.) and if your quick no bleeding required, did that on an 86 wagon...........G
  25. Haven't seen this mentioned, I replaced an ea81 with a different one and the pilot bearing on the replacement was different than the original. Sucked because it went together then bound up the engine, and it was my first engine swap, changed out the pilot all went well, hope this helps............G
