I was reading in another thread about why people chose their soobs. Some brought up how easy they are to work on, great mileage, etc. But one person pointed out the bulletproof design and engineering that went into the power trains of these cars. So now I'm wondering who has the Soob with the most miles on it? I'll start with my 81.

 

Its orignal owner used it as a pilot vehicle (the car you find in front of the truck with the enormously oversized load). The original engine died at 1,212,073 miles. Replaced with an 83 engine that had 178,000. Total vehicle miles at this point: 1,237,000 miles. Frankly, I think it only keeps running out of spite.

 

Anyone else?

My parents' red 82 wagon had 237,000 miles when we parked it and it was running fine. Not even close to yours but...

a professor i know has over 1,500,000 on his e81 wagon-only the second engine too.

mine has almost 206K

Im up to 209k on my 82 ea81, no tranny work ( its an automatic) and the ND dist is still perfect. the engine has been rebuilt though. Axles only were replaced because of repair shops messing up the threads on one and the other had a torn boot for 2 years.

 

I also bought it in 97 with 96k on it, basically brand new.

223,000 on the '87 GL Wagon, rebuilt heads at 215,000 and "governor hone" on AT3, uses a bit of oil but runs good.

253,000 on the '87 RX, all orginal as far as I know (I just bought it at 251,000), runs strong.

dunno if it right, but it says 90,666.2 i think its lying i guess that it is more like 200,000+ cause i drove it for three months and the mileage stayed at 87,253. this is in the '75 "super star" wagon

205k here on my 89xt6 5spd AWD.

 

Just replaced the distributor and had the axles rebuilt. Burns a bit of oil but hey, that's what oil is for.

290k on the original EA81 the previous owner trashed. 7k on a well taken care of rebuild

My DL parts car (donated it's 4WD to my rig) is still a 2WD daily driver, and going VERY strong at 326,000 (last I heard).

I get that bs alert quite frequently when I tell people how many miles my 81 has. The only reason I know it to be correct is that I bought the car at auction from the original owner. He told me (after the fact )that the odo had rolled over because he had used it since new as an interstate pilot vehicle. Oh well...I've had a lot of fun in it. Definitely got my money's worth.

heres mine:

my first 85 wagon d/r ea82-245,000 killed by a corn stalk.

87 wagon 5spd 82t s/r-178,000 just put in a new motor

85 wagon d/r ea82 wagon- 135,000 still running.

In my experience, it has average reliability. Not better than full size GM vehicles, or whatever.

 

Replaced tranny at 150K, engine was running on 3 cyls by 180Kmis.

 

202K miles now.

Think there are about 3 too many numbers in that there milage...

 

1.2 MILLION miles? that's a typo; right?

 

Also ya gotta be clear when you say how many miles are on your car. I could say mine has 200,000 on it; which the whole thing has moved for sure. This is not 200,000 miles on every OEM part however. The engine has been completly rebuilt and a good 80% of the car has been replaced or repaired with used or new parts. Maybe 10% of my car has made it 200,000 miles... Who knows what all the previouse owner had replaced.

Morgan, nope...you read right 1.2 MILLION miles. As I explained, the car was bought new in 1981 by a man who used it until about 18 months ago as an interstate pilot car. That works out to 56227.27 miles per year, on average, for the 22 years of its existance before I had to replace the engine (yes, it was SERIOUSLY toasty). Thats 4,685.61 miles per month or 1,171.4 miles per week which is really a bit less than average for an interstate hauler. (1,237,000 / 22 / 12 / 4, I'm assuming an average of 4 weeks per month).

 

That's really the only reason I'm buying the previous owners story, because the math does work out.

 

Also, as I stated before, the current engine is NOT the original. And, of course, its had lots and LOTS of maintenance over the years. Currently, third gear is just about gone, rear brakes need replacing...yada yada yada....she's tired and I'll probably relegate her to parts donor at some point soon. *sigh*

 

Edit: The original motor died around 1212000 or so, but the tranny is still original, the interior is original (except the radio) and the body work is original. Shocks, brakes, clutch, tires, exhaust, etc. have all been replaced many times.

218000 right now, original engine and tranny. Doesn't burn oil. When the tranny is cold, it has a little grind going into third, but thats it.

 

I daily drive the car, and take it camping. It also does duty pulling my jet-ski.

I am at 216k. Bought it in Feb 2004 w/a non-working Speedo/Odo. Looked into it and the cable was disconnected from the tranny. Previous owner was a delivery guy for a auto parts supplier.

 

From what I can tell original tranny and engine. Carby was rebuilt recently and both rear wheel bearings were replaced. Just did a front axle rebuild.

Well after doing some checkup with the previous owner of my 79 brat. He tells me that it had roughly 233,000 miles on it. And notthing has needed to be replaced except minor things like oil filter, air filter, oil changeetc. Other than that my brat has had not thing replaced except for the carpet when i got it :-)

Alternator, Batteries, brake pads, brake drum, 1 headlight, CV's, Fuel & oil pump, tires and Body.....That's it since 1982! LOL!

Hey sweet, looking at your picture, it looks like you've pretty well replaced the body, too.
