Looks like a Supercharger to me.

 

It's a Roots type blower, pully driven. Also the write-up states "1.8 liter supercharged engine". Those blowers make a lovely whine that is unmistakeable.

From the pictures, you can see that the front axles are bolted to the tranny with a flange. Now either this is a seriously modified Subaru trans, or they did the bad dance, and put in a VW tranny with an adaptor plate. So I think it's FWD. I sent a question the auction winner to see if he would be willing to answer some questions about it once he takes possesion. We'll see.

 

Also in the same picture is a blue hydraulic looking device - I suspect that's a hydraulic clutch setup for the VW tranny.

What flange? It looks like a Subaru tranny to me... I dont see anything different.

 

The blue hydrolic device is connected to the giant presurized cylinder thingy, which looks like a heater core or oil cooler of some kind, as its routed back to the front of the car possibly to an extra cooler that you can somewhat see in the front grill in the 2nd picture. It might also be some kind of fire supression system too for a specific race series.

 

That supercharger is awesome though... I just wish my car was 75 or older so I could do what I wanted to the motor...

Since this is just a guessing game

I'll guess the tank with the pressure gauge is the oil pressure accumulator.

It can be used as a pre oiler for the s-charger.

(note the solenoid control)

 

I'll also guess the blue cylinder is a hydraulic brake bias

control as one end points to an area below the brake pipe distribution block.

 

Hope we can get the new owner to join the forum.

The flange bolts, and the CV joint can clearly be seen (ie: no DOJ is present - this is very un-subaru-like):

EXACTLY what I would love to know - if they somehow improved the axles to take more punishment all of us off-roaders would surely benifit from seeing how it was setup. But more likely I suspect it's probably just a VW trans. Those look very much like VW transaxle CV's - perhaps Porsche 930 joints. Very popular upgrades for Baja Bug's and such.

But it would make sense to run a tranny with better gearing and such, which the porsche/VW trannys have...

 

I'm curious now about the Hubs too, maybe its a completely different suspension, brake, etc. setup down there.

I am a VW guy...the only reason I bought this car was the fact it used to run on the same racing circuit as I currently run.

 

The car was last run on the Pensylvannia Hill Climb Circuit circa 1987 - 1988 (PHA) http://www.pahillclimb.org. Hill climbing in PA has been going on since 1906. Hill climbs are timed races on closed roads...you vs. the other cars in your class. I'm currently writing a book on the history and when I saw this car on Ebay...placed a real low ball bid...now I have it. What to do with it, is the next question.

 

It is rumored that this car came from Japan as a prepared race car, but no where built to what it is now. I have not spend much time with the car since I brought it home last Saturday...I've been sick and it has been too cold. We did fire it up...and what a beast! Besides the coolant leaks...everything else seems good except the tranny. We could only get 1st and reverse...but it appears the pattern is reversed: with 1st in the upper right, 2nd down, and 3rd upper left shifting towards you, instead of away from you...could this car originally been right hand drive???

 

I have no idea what year it is...what exact model it is.

Welcome to the board! :clap:

 

See if you can take some pics so we can help identify more things about the car, we arent even sure which transmission it is using.

 

Also, if you have the VIN number still on the car somewhere, we might be able to figure out what model it is for sure, see if you can find a build date too.

 

It doesnt look like a JDM car, my best guess is just a mid 70's FWD GL coupe...

I'm pretty sure even if it was previously RHD the shifting pattern would be the same as LHD. I'm not familiar with the pattern you discribe and I'm in a right hand drive country. Nice going on getting the car though. I'm interested more specs on the supercharger.
