September 28, 200817 yr I was at a junkyard yesterday looking for some trim on my 96 legacy and some guy just about crapped his pants after he saw my wagon. He started telling me they only made 150 cyclops eye equipped Subarus because they were trying them out in 1980. He called it a "snow finder". These arent that rare are they???
September 28, 200817 yr I think there must have been more than 150 of them. I know the 1981 wagons were equipped with the "passing light".
September 28, 200817 yr Author Ya they were standard on some years of 4wd soob's im finding, but what about 1980? Were they standard then ? Mine also has the "passing light" and is stock from what markjw told me.
September 28, 200817 yr There's alot more than 150 of em, My 80 GL had one and i was surprized to find that my 82 Came with one as well. ~Dayten~
September 28, 200817 yr Author No im just talking about in 1980 only since it was the first year. It makes sence that they might have only made a few but 150??
September 28, 200817 yr in 1980 all 4wd GL wagons had them. It's in the Brochure My old '80 GL Ski Wagon had one. These are what got 'em 1980 GL 4WD Wagon 1981 GL 4WD Wagon, GL 4WD Hatch 1982 GL 4WD Wagon, GL 4WD Hatch, GL Brat
September 28, 200817 yr They were standard on many 4WD GL's from '80 to '82. They were officially called "passing lamps" in 80/81, and then "center lamps" in '82. They are not at all any more rare than an '80 to '82 4WD GL. I have two of the 80/81 lamps in my garage and one of the '82 style..... and I only hit the yards about once a month. GD
September 29, 200817 yr I've got one retrofit into my '82 Dl Brat, and 3 others in my garage... so I guess that means that after McBrat, GD, and Myself there's only 139 left out there!
September 29, 200817 yr so that leaves 135 un-accounted for... I know Mellow Yellow has one in his Brat so we're down to 134
October 1, 200817 yr Both of my '82 GL wagons had them. I'm not sure how practical they really are... but I love them. Z
October 1, 200817 yr i keep thinking this is needed on my 85 brat just to light the rural highway and keep me from hitting a deer.
October 1, 200817 yr retro fitted one onto my 82 BRAT and I have another one sitting in the garage complete w/oem switch. saw another one in the JY about 1/2 a year ago.. that brings it down to 128:lol:
October 1, 200817 yr Yeah, the "snow finder" center lights are really rare. They only work when it's snowing, and they emit a special type of light that allows you to see through snowflakes, even in a blizzard. I heard there were only 15 made, and I've only ever seen one.
October 1, 200817 yr I had one other 1980 wagon besides the one I sold to ProjectRX. It had the same passing lite on it. Personally,I think out of all the years the passing lite was available, the '80 model had the nicest looking one.Heavy duty lookin' chrome piece with a nice factory blue inlay. Its much more substantial than the one on my '82 wagon which is just a plastic door with a subaru badge glued on. Still very cool.
October 2, 200817 yr I have one... for some reason... The only 2nd gen I think I've owned was a DL and had no center lamp...
October 3, 200817 yr I just fit one from a 1982 wagon into my 1985 Brat. Starts on page 5. Check it out: http://www.flickr.com/photos/26905545@N07/sets/72157605926523746/detail/

December 25, 200916 yr I was at a junkyard yesterday looking for some trim on my 96 legacy and some guy just about crapped his pants after he saw my wagon. He started telling me they only made 150 cyclops eye equipped Subarus because they were trying them out in 1980. He called it a "snow finder". These arent that rare are they??? I just bought me an 82 GL wagon. It has the light from the factory. I am so happy with my suub, it is all original with 54k... really only 54k miles garage kept all its life!! Was only driven about 4000 miles in the past 16 years. I am only the third owner. Looks like new inside still, and the original paint is still glossy! I am gushing over this thing! Everything works... even the cyclops!!
December 26, 200916 yr Does anyone have a passing lamp they can sell to me? I want to put one in my 80 Brat dl
December 27, 200916 yr Yes they are cool! I am looking for a working timer that mounts on the right strut tower. The timer enables voltage for a small amount of time to open and close the electric door that covers the center light. The door has to be fully open for the light to come on via an limit switch. This keeps heat from the light from melting or discoloring the cover.
December 27, 200916 yr i have one in my garage , someday it will make it into my 81 gl wagon ...125 ?
