Boycotting Town Fair here. best of luck ! Many years with them and the last decade was probably a 4 out of a 10 rating at best. But I’ll confess that being in an urban area and frequenting the surrounding TFT’s only that you folks out in the ‘burbs can probably still get decent quality service at your local.....mmmm maybe.

To rebuild or not to rebuild....E81
moosens replied to zenzor's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Hearts come into play sometimes in situations like this. Do you want to be able to flaunt a fairly correct representation of your vehicle or just keep it breathing and rolling ? The heart says keep looking long and hard and in many places and you will still be able to dig up main bearings and more. Make that engine fresh again and if you have to settle on a used oil pump then just do the best you can with checking play and having seals/gaskets ready. There’s parts out there and more will be showing up from the 80’s Notice those recent New Old Stock finds that just popped up. Couple of guys recently found some stash. And plenty of hoarders going to be cleaning house. Keep your eyes open. Otherwise find that EJ22 and make it so. DL Automatic with A/C Curious who the original owner was. Seems like an old lady Brat! Enjoy it ! -

Looks like the old rain gutter style like my old Thule 1050 series. -
Thanks! They’ll stay shut. As for mileage soon I’ll be doing a tune up and I’ll see if that improves it any. Running steel wheels currently but I have the alloys in the cargo area and next chance I have they’re going on with a fresh set of rubber. Should mention this is a manual transmission. Anything else for warnings about this generation please feel free to post. At this point do they still put relays in places that get wet and corrode ? Like the old gens.
-
Hoping to find some other high mileage and/or long term owners to assist. Just getting used to this model. I tend to be “that guy” driving older cars so it takes me a while to catch on to later generations. Thanks for understanding. The dual sunroof set , how are they for leaks ? Typical maintenance where I should clean out the drains with a wire snake ? Use anything on the rubber gaskets ? Anything special about anything related to these I greatly appreciate your input. Yes I have a fobia I guess it is about those pesky pieces of glass overhead. Gas mileage ? I seem to put in around 16 gallons running that sucker to near dry and it responds with around 370 miles. That’s WITH the yellow gas tank icon lit up for a solid 40 miles or so , so yes I’m running it mighty low Once in a while. So 23 1/4 MPG sound ok to you ? I’ll have more questions soon I’m sure. Thanks

Personally in 22 years I’ll be 80 as of tomorrow. So if it were me I’d be set for my driving life which old Subarus aren’t totally compromising my orthopedics. And there’s no promise I’ll be comfy in a Brat during my 60’s and 70’s ! Something I do contemplate since my intentions are to wait out a while as I get back into my motorcycles and figure in a good 8 years maybe I’ll search for my gen one Brat. By then some of the folks buffing them out now will be tired and thinking of retirement, paying for kids college , etc etc -

Only thing I’ve found that I would be works is the part number for the FF1 tank plug. Being a Subaru I’m guessing that bolt stayed the same through the next couple of generations. p/n 6421 28000 Thats the original part number. By now there was likely a superseded number. But a good parts guy can dig and find out. -
And Jim , I’ve recently jumped ship from Town Fair to Firestone. For what that’s worth to ya. TF offers great deals but for a few reasons I’m avoiding them now. I won’t trash them badly but let’s just say there seems to be more attentive employees at the Fairfield Firestone and they also offer some great deals. I suggest getting the lifetime alignment deal. Hope to see you around. Cheers!

Sweet ! yes the third gear thing , synchro n/g and throws it back at ya too. Good luck on the five speed swap.

Well if there’s some time constraints I guess that’s ok. Just seems too easy to have to bypass but you’re the one who’s exhausted yourself. Having a hard time figuring why you can’t score the correct bolt. I’d be money there’s a bolt on your vehicle that is the same size and thread pitch. At least if you found one you could then read the size and pitch. Seems weird that nobody has a bolt plug , nobody has a tank laying around , and nobody has ever checked the size. -

For sure I also try my best to avoid FB. And I don’t use their messenger service since they are already too intrusive. More in that some other time. Greyhound , the bus people , they also do shipping. Many of us have used them for large items. Just need to pick up at the local terminal. Cost effective if you need a hood , large panel , etc. Talk soon. Cheers! -

One group good for parts. https://m.facebook.com/groups/730768337106149/?ref=bookmarks The USMB on fb https://m.facebook.com/groups/UltimateSubaruMessageBoard/?ref=bookmarks Good luck. Nothing like solid panels and solid cars. I’ve used Greyhound for panels and had great experiences. -

Cool , keep in touch and we’ll get together soon enough. Search for those doors out west and save the effort if they’re really bad. Any two door works. You probably knew that. Just swap Brat glass over. This board was quite active before the masses were lured over to the current attraction. You knew that too. ;) Talk soon. -

Across the little pond from you in Bridgeport CT. Good luck in your retirement and with your project Brat. Whatever I find that may help you I’ll gladly contribute. Currently I am cleaning house of 1970-79 parts. Unfortunately for you and the other later Subaru owners I already purged most of my later parts for 1980-84 and 1985-94. But some stuff still pops up now and then. Come warm weather I’ll be back at it. As for hobbies to go with the Brat , for me it was archery and before that firearm deer hunting. Whatever your hobbies I hope the Brat shows itself well someday for you. My concern from reading your post is what the covers may have done to inhibit rust. Best wishes on that account. My storage is in Milford just off I-95 , maybe we’ll meet up there this spring. I know I have a gen 2 front “A” bar. Enjoy ! Paul -

Kind of working in reverse , have you yet tried to jump the fuel pump with a couple of leads from the battery ? Check the archives ? I know that gets annoying so I understand if you didn’t strike gold if you did. From horrible memory I want to say 3psi is fine. Not sure you’d require a significantly more powerful pump with a stock Hitachi. -
Camera time ? Get one of those cheapie harbor fright versions if nobody gives a great answer. I sure don’t have one at this time. If you’re going at this seriously I want to suggest taking the tank out. While out go over the body/bed and all you can. Mark your lines , take pics of it all.
-
No but depending on which line there may be an anti-roll system installed like the 4WD wagons. At work but I’ll try to help from the manual later. Nothing in the tank like later models. Just the obvious meter/float.
-
I hope you meant ozium and not ozone. VT car ? Semi- Trashed - sorry to be negative but what you mention about Pittsburgh cars you should multiply that for VT. Plenty of friend in VT and when they come down here they have rust on 5 year old cars. I completely understand about making the most of what you’ve got. I live and will likely die by being a user of aged Subarus. And I live in New England. So these type of vehicles have come and gone. Use it and dispose of it before dumping tons of money into it , because there’s always more coming down the pike. Best of luck with it.

What is my '84 GL with 25K miles worth?
moosens replied to Double D's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Those seats look like GL-10 $4k opening bid , or maybe low opening but $4k reserve.Just my opinion BAT seems to draw the more serious buyer. You’ll do well. Enjoy ! -
Looks nice! From here that looks like an uncracked dashboard. If so you want to baby it.
-
My parts manual does not show the drain plug. If it does and I’m not seeing it , they still don’t list any size within the Part Name column where sizes are always shown when applicable.
