Replacing Door Handles Gen1 ‘81 Brat
moosens replied to NuclearDeLorean's topic in Historic Subaru Forum: 50's thru 70's
Patience. It’ll be better soon. From my memory you can get it without removing the glass. Keep your crank handy. But if you just can’t and do want it remove the glass it’s not that hard. Rather than fumble through instructions just use your 10mm socket and find the mounting spots. Then lift the glass and as I recall tipping it back up/nose down seems to ease the clearance needed. Many of us have done it and we are no more a mechanic than you. -
Hey it’s me from eBay - cashingmystuffin , aka Paul. As mentioned come warmer weather I’ll dig out all I have. Meanwhile I did leave some close to the front of my storage so I’ll try to yank out what I can and hopefully they apply to your ride. Keep looking , you’re doing the right thing. I do have KYB’s and there’s a couple others from back in the day before the aftermarket stuff became mostly crap. Talk to you soon.

You could use either , best suited to what you do and where you’re located. But the 180 is fine enough. Some folks get a little antsy when their old 70’s Subaru sits in traffic and the temp goes up kind of fast. But that’s usually the fan.

Don’t get too scared. Some of us have been involved a long time and have parts. Things are slow for me right now , busy in life , but slow for listing parts and such. Come April I should be back to selling off my collection. A couple guys like myself started retaining good quality used parts as well as SEEKING OUT NEW OLD STOCK FROM OLDER DEALERSHIPS , etc etc and we generally have what’s needed to keep these vehicles going for a good while. I am stepping aside from it all and only going to retain a bare minimum of consumables and various replacement parts. So I am selling the rest. There’s an awful lot. All from 1970-1979 and gen one Brat. Located in Milford CT if you’re at all willing to drive up come springtime. Jason from NC also a member here drove up and made out really well being the first one to make the effort. Good luck ! And enjoy !!

Matt , what’s this silliness al about here ? This mean you’re out that way and nobody to hang with ? -
Sweet ! Right on Karl ! And the 650 Dakar , cooool. When you have a few minutes I suggest you check out this blog I guess it is , of an old rider who favors the 650 as his best to ride for his incredibly lengthy “career” of adventure riding. http://pietboonstra.blogspot.com/?m=1 Looking at your rides I see a few we also had through our family. My dad’s 92 Ranger is still going strong same as my 92 year old dad. Enjoy ! Quick quote from Piet’s blog: During my 67 years and 1¼ million miles of riding, my records show that I owned and rode 33 different motorcycles: 2 1947 Harley Davidsons 74 cu. in. OHV 1 1949 Harley Davidson 74 cu. in. "Hydra-Glide" 1 1986 Harley Davidson 80 cu. in. FLHT 1 1955 Harley Davidson 125cc Hummer 1 Used 1957 165cc Harley Davidson/Puckett 1 Used 1929 Harley 74JD 4 Triumph 500cc T100C ('62, '64, '66 and '68) 1 Triumph 250cc Single 2 Triumph 500cc TR5T Trophy Trail 1 Triumph 750cc 3-cyl Trident 1 1977 Suzuki GS750 1 2003 Suzuki VStrom 1000 1 2007 Suzuki VStrom 650 1 1971 Suzuki TS250 1 1976 Suzuki PE250 1 1982 Honda 1100cc Gold Wing 2 1986 1200cc Gold Wings 1 1987 1200cc Gold Wing 1 1979 Honda XR500R 1 1982 Honda FT500 Ascot single 1 1984 BMW R80ST 1 2001 BMW R1150GS Boxer Twin 1 2003 BMW F650GS Dakar Single 1 1997 Yamaha 750cc Virago 1 1992 Yamaha 225cc Serow 1 Used 1956 250cc Maico 1 1957 250cc Villiers-DMW Of all the adventure touring motorcycles that I owned, the two with the best handling on unstable surfaces were the BMW F650GS Dakar and the BMW R80ST. Of those, the F650 Dakar had the best reliability and lowest repair and maintenance costs.

Service Manual question?
moosens replied to Checkerboard Comet's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
This has to be a hatchback. I used to call them “stubby wagons”. Dude , picture please. You’re causing an itch some of us want scratched. -
Looks like you’re really in the middle of a nice winter project effort. I have brand new old stock valves BUT all are boxed up and in storage (cold) and not so well organized so it’ll take me a little effort and nuts freezing. Sad but quick story is that one guy was going to buy me out then balked but meanwhile had boxed it all up. So I’m kind of at the blank page again. I sure as heck didn’t label boxes because I was sure the lot was being sold. The end.

Nobody here gets out of hand (that I can see). It’s not a zoo like FB with wisebutts. Enjoy your time here. And your posts don’t get sucked down into oblivion. Cheers! -
Service Manual question?
moosens replied to Checkerboard Comet's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
No sign of a 1985 or later 1600 manual in my visible collection. And I really do not recall ever seeing one for a 1600 after 1984 -

Service Manual question?

Sorry , I didn’t read so well. To sum up , I had no idea they still made a wagon with a 1600 in 1985 for the USA. Pardon me if you’re elsewhere. -
Here we go into 2021. Situation still the same. I have lots of parts , much of which is new old stock that I’m looking to move along. Focusing on my bikes and getting out of Subarus other than daily drivers. I’ll be back someday. Saving what I feel I’ll need or will help for when I get back into the game. Due to the expensive rent at storage I’m wanting to trim down and need to rid my holdings of decades of Subaru dedication. Feel free to send a Private Message regarding any items for 1970-1979 cars and gen one Brat. No 80’s parts other than random oddball items that pop up from nowhere. So please don’t ask about 80’s , 90’s , or later. 1970’s only. Thanks for looking. Fenders , both sides , stage one and two 1972-77 and 1977-79+Brat80-81 you knew that. Have a couple NEW , and the used ones are plenty fine. Beyond fenders I have literally a ton of more of parts. Boxes of new old stock stuffed with all sorts of items. Wheels - 4x140 of course and the early 4.5 width. Basic steels but these were early take offs and show close to new. Easy clean up. Crate engine rebuilt by ATK for dealers and shops 1600 widecase with internal water passage like the 1800. Complete 1600 from a 1979 low miles like 94k , ran well. Comes with intake and carb and I think maybe the brackets and alternator too. Stored inside these last 20 years. I’d trust it to drop in but naturally since it’s out you can do as you wish for refresh. Transmissions - a couple or more of the single range on demand 4WD , and there’s one five speed FWD too. Also have rear differentials will include free with transmission. Otherwise $20 (rear diff.) because I just need things gone that take up space and are heavy. Lots more. Happy New Year .....yes I’m laughing too.

I don’t know. Guys who do that stuff all the time might just swap out or remove some pins in connectors , so be sure you get a good reply from an experienced wrenchman. My job in life is to use and occasionally abuse the well kept used Subaru. That’s my game in a nutshell. I don’t bother with much of what’s been done by others with swaps from different t generations , or modifications for power , etc. Plug and play. But there’s help for you. Maybe make a separate post.

My 92 same deal and all we know from history ( as you guys mention ) for corrective action and still does not work. Its not a start solenoid issue. GD has the solution I’d guess. But at this point I’m about to let the car go soon. Seems to happen only during the winter as best as I can tell. Ours is also an automatic. Sometimes it’s just a second , sometimes more seconds , and other times I keep trying , keep the voltage going and re-try ignition. Most of the time it’ll then send enough juice but then there’s times I just say screw it and go for another car.

As mentioned in the PM I’ll let the 98/99 Forester 2.5 four cam go for $300 The 2002/2003 Legacy GT engine same deal. Both are in NE CT near the RI and Mass. corner. It’s a good two hours from the NY/CT line. Chances are really good that if you come up you’ll meet one of out other board members who is a super Subaru Tech and he also has parts cars and stock lying around. Temps going to drop some but doesn’t bother me. Both engines are inside , one on a stand the other tucked in a corner on a dolley. Back up to the bay and it’s an easy load.

Looking to possibly treat myself to a small commuter that can offer a little excitement. And with that I had thought about a Yamaha TW200 for the last couple of decades at least. Then came the little KTM Dukes. Any baby Duke riders out there , please let me know your thoughts. I am an older experienced rider getting back into commuting on two wheels. I’m 5’7” and ain’t gettin any taller , shrinking more like it. So seat height matters. Used to think I’d certainly be on a Suzuki DR350 or 650 and then the 400 or whatever they’ve made since those olden days. Never got that dual sport bike. Would have been just as happy with a Kawi KLR etc. but anyways here I am in 2021.

1983 E81 Lock Washer for Rear Axle Nut

And one vote for good old Front Wheel Drive Subarus. What we all started off with in the 70’s , folks my age anyways. And to me living in New England and all a simple FWD Subaru manages easily 99% of daily driving throughout the entire year/cycle. Ride on !
