Yikes ! 2003 something big happened
NV Zeno replied to moosens's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXIf the rear components were faulty, he'd still have drive, because the fronts provide MOST of the power to the road. At first I'm thinking CVJ failure, but reading more causes me to think throwout bearing..although those make a huge racket LONG before catastrophic failure, something Paul would surely recognize. Just my 2 bucks

Humming from rear end
I agree with the U joint diagnosis. Had a speed related hum on my '83 some years back, and my Subaru guru at Norm's Auto Repair in South Tahoe replaced them. No more hum. That was about 100,000 miles ago, at 292,000 miles.

2008 Forester Trans Fluid
I'd like to do a "drain and refill" on this car. The Owner's Manual says (besides Gen Subaru) "Castrol Transmax J". I can't seem to find it in the stores, and I've seen all kinds of differing substitutions. Any opinions or recommendations?

What's a good snow tire?
NV Zeno replied to turbofiat124's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXYeah, I ran a couple sets of Glacier Grips on my old '83 years ago, they were wonderful..did what I needed at a good price. Currently on my '96 OB "winter only" car, I've got Firestone WinterForce on. They're a bit noisy on dry pavement. Got about 18K on them now, plenty of meat left. Got them for a decent price from Tire Rack.

Which EA body style do I have?
A word of advice. Since there is overlap with EA81 and EA82 body styles that year, when ordering or looking up parts search instead for a '87 BRAT. The running gear in the hatches and BRATS are mostly identical, and there will be no mixing up EA81 and 82 chassis, since there was no EA82 BRAT. Just my 2 bucks

'00-'04 Roof
NV Zeno replied to NV Zeno's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXThis is EXACTLY the information that I was looking for, thanks nvu and gbhrps. Since the paint has mostly all peeled off already, it should be a snap to sand and repaint. I'm not looking for perfection here, the owner is concerned mostly about the appearance of the peeling paint and multicolored roof strips. I'll probably just mask, sand and repaint with a small brush, just to satisfy my friend's concern about appearance.

'00-'04 Roof
NV Zeno replied to NV Zeno's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXSo...just to be perfectly clear, those strips are glued to the roof, no fasteners, right?

'00-'04 Roof
NV Zeno replied to NV Zeno's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXHaha, maybe I wasn't all that clear: I'm asking about the black strips that run longitudinally on the middle of the roof, BETWEEN and parallel to the two heavy roof rails (my '96 has three). If something was to be tied to the roof, it would sit directly on these.
-
'00-'04 Roof
OK. I'm working blind here, don't have immediate access to this car. I'm asking about a 2001 Outback, specifically the roof strips..not the two roof rails, but the black painted strips that are attached directly to the roof. The black paint is peeling off, and the owner asked me to repaint them (she lives far away from me). Just so I know to bring the appropriate tools to remove them, I need to know how those strips are attached to the car. Screws? Rivets? TORX? Glue? Thanks for any information.
