  1. I think it can be done for less. Buy just you're HGs and the intake gaskets from a dealer (or online subaru parts) Get a cheap ebay Headgasket set (about $40) and just use the cam seals, exhaust gaskets, Valve guide seals(if you are lapping or just cleaning the valves)and valve cover gaskets from it. Cheaper than buying all that stuff seperate. Throw the cheap HGs and intakes away. now you're at about $150 tops for the HG stuff. So add $100 for machining and another $100 for a PCI timing belt kit and another $50-75 for a new t-stat, oil, filter, coolant, hoses, etc...... and that puts it right around $400. It will be stamped either EJ22 or EJ25 on the top front center of the block. Also, if it is DOHC (obvious by the shape of the timing cover) it is a EJ25.
  2. I think whatever hack weld-up they did for the rear suspension probably changed the geometry to the point where the rear axles would not work.
  3. Who said on the bottom of the bumper. Mine are on the top. Rally style.
  4. Yeah, 2wds are obviously different. I was just speaking about the majority AWD trans. Unless someone can show me otherwise, All AWD 4EATs from 88-98, use the same set of sensors and solenoids,(different connectors:rolleyes: ) regardless of OBD I or II. As example, 98 OBDII automatic, does not have any extra or different solenoids as compared to say a 92 OBDI auto. The only difference is in the TCU, Which in later years does use more input from vehichle sensors. But not Any extra sensors in the trans itself. OBDII cars may not be able to output trans codes manually, without *select monitor* scanner. Although I really don't know. I haven't had to do trans work on any OBDII cars yet. But I don know the transmissions themselves are the same untill at least the mid 98 redesign (external filter, etc..) Not much was really changed, and the newer ones may still have excactly the same set of sensors and solenoids in the trans.
  5. I believe you used the wrong mark on the crank sprocket. NOT the arrows! The crank mark is actually on the one of the tabs on the back of the sprocket. If you used the arrow, you're valve timing will be off(which explains compressed air out the intake)
  6. Use them in addition to the stock lights. I wired mine with a double throw switch with center *off* so they can either be *off*, *on*, or come on and off with the high beam switch.
  7. 55 watt driving lights mounted to the bumper. Wal-mart has good cheap ones for about 15 bucks.
  8. I don't think this is true. All the sensors and solenoids in the trans are all the same until at least 98.
  9. I think the second runs, after the wheel fell off the first time, I think he only had 2wd. I don't think he he had an axle on the rear.
  10. Well, if you just want to make it AWD with more power, you can just drop in any Legacy/Impreza/Forrester Engine ,Transmission, and matching rear diff. Custom length driveshaft may be needed. Use EA82 shifter linkage. Rear disc brakes can be had of a 4 cyl XT without having to do a full 5 lug conversion. Also, Turbo GL/Loyale/Leone cars have the same setup, you could scavenge from them too. Suspension there aren't many options without doing the five lug swap.
  11. That's not a *SUBARU* T-stat. Trust us on this. Get an OEM thermostat. If you want better cooling get a dual core radiator. Or mount an extra heater core and fan in front of the engine bay as an *auxillary* unit.
  12. S'ko did it in his Brat. Added Power steering too. Althoughg I think he used the whole EA82 crossmemeber, so that may not be a bolt on option.
  13. I don't think it's just no dash lights. I think ALL of his parking lights are not working via the headlight switch. His park lights work with the column *parking* switch, but not like they normally should via the headlight switch. True2Blue, have you checked the fuse for the parking lights? Fuse 6 IIRC labeled *Room , Illlumination*. If the fuse is not blown, check if the fuse is being supplied with 12v. That fuse 6, and fuse 7, are supplied 12v by the Left headlight relay with the ignition *on* If there is not 12v with the key *on*, then the relay is blown. Have you checked that both headlights work? Brightly? The reason I ask is that the running lights power is supplied through the Left headlight relay. If you're left light is not working or is very dim (from feedback voltage from right side through the switch) then you don't have power to that circuit. Check both the fuse then the relay.
  14. I wanted to post this in the off-road or racing forum, and if it must be there moved so be it. But any EA82 owner should see this I think if it had not been so rusty it would have held toghether.

My ultimate goal setup: 3.9 or lower gearing 4EAT, with switchable FWD/AWD/Locked 4WD(already inplace,,4.44 in the future ) Welded rear Dual handle front e-brake FTW!!!
  16. If a Legacy wagon can get around with a Carbed EJ18, which I know some markets got, then a First gen forrester can do fine with an EJ18. won't be quick, but it'd be effiecient. More so than a 2.5. 2.5 vs 1.8 for MPG???? 1.8 FTW Hands down no brainer, Duh. worth the effort??? Like I said, that's up to the one doing the work and spending the money on gas. Buying a more effiecient car would be easier, but then it wouldn't be an AWD Subaru.
  17. First, If you looked at asensor on the top front of the block, you were looking at the oil pressure sender. There are indeed 2 temp sender. 1 for the gauge, one for the ECU. They are both on the back side of the engine installed into the crossovertube. Below and a bit to one side of the throttlebody. The single connector one is for the gauge. The one with 2 connections is the one for the ECU, and the one that controls fan function. Test it for resistance, should change smoothly with engine temperature. If it has zero or infinite resistance it's shot. If it fails, the ECU turns the fans on as a failsafe. Also, by chance, Sorry if this is dumb ? But you don't have you're Defrost or Air Conditioning on do you? That will make the fan run any time they are on.
  18. First, EJ18 has something like 115 HP, not 90. But that's an aside. You're thinking is backwards. If he stayed out of the gas, and drove according to best milage and not speedy acceleration, he would DEFINATELY get better milage. Espescailly on the Highway, were the 1.8 could keep the ball rolling fine. unless you're heavy on the gas, City driving would be about the same or abit better. It would be easier to get a bigger difference with manual vs. auto. But there would be a difference. Forresters are not THAT much heavier than a Impreza. Hell the 2008 Imps probably way more than the older first gen Forrester. And like I said, those 2008 imps have 1.5 liters(with 107 hp:)in them in some global markets, for fuel economy. I think the car would drive reasonably(although wimpy) and you would see gas milage improvement. Enough to justify the work and overcome the interchange issues???? Perhaps,....... but perhaps not. It'd be doing it for the sake of doing it really.
  19. IDK? The 95 and later might still have a way of outputting codes via the AT temp light? I just don't know it. Does the 95 have a *Manu* button and a *power* light?
  20. The new imprezas get an EJ15:eek:, in Russia. 107 hp(still more than an EA:rolleyes: ). Petrol prices and fuel econony are probably the reasons. On a side note, that would be a great engine for a first gen brat or wagon 4wd.

    Mudding!

Here's another one. This was just a quick afternoon romp in a local mud hole. I had to test out my new manual boost controller and newly relocated boost gauge. This motor will be hurting and probably blow-up eventually from the upped boost. It's a hammered POS I cobbled toghether to drive the car home after buying on EBAY. But I can't kill it!!! 25k miles since I built it from junk, and still going!! I'm just using it to work out issues in my setup(boost, TMIC, fan, Spider intake). New motor ready and waiting. This one is of a hill climb at the same spot. You can hear the engines and see upclose more. This hole is just a little playground. Funny thing is, we found this video on Youtube of the same spot! With an Impreza doing some donuts in it! Small world. Who's Aaron???
  22. If this where true, Subarus would not sell in Europe. But they have actually been gaining market share over there. Subaru Needs to stay committed to AWD, durable vehichles. They just need to make them Diesel/electric hybids. If they do introduce a small 2wd *efficiency* car, it should be full electric.
  23. The EA/ER 4EAT code output is done like this key off, insert FWD fuse(skip for FWD) Put shifter in D. Turn key to *run*/no start depress 1st hold button(on) Shift to 3, depress 1st hold(off) Shift to 2, depress 1st hold(on) now push gas pedal more than halfway down. POWER light will come on steady for 2.5 seconds, then blink codes, then repeat. There are 11 blinks after the 2.5 second initial Pulse. Each of the 11 blinks represents a component. If all 11 are quick, .2 second blips then everything is normal. If say the 3rd blip is slower, almost a full second, then you have a code 3. 8th blip slow, then you have code 8, and so on. 90-94 Legacy 4eats use a similar, almost identical proceedure, using the *manu* button.
  24. If you get it, my shop is south of you on hwy 99. Just before you get to Corvallis, just after Lewisburg rd., is my shop. Behind *The Futon Man* I'd be happy to see it and give it a look over for issues. Hell, you could maybe convince the guy to let you bring it to me for an inspection before purchase to check it out.
