Double checking on alternators
cobcob replied to cobcob's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Did the switch last night, all running great and no warning lights on the dash any more! -
Bigger Aftermarket Brat / EA81 front sway bar??
cobcob replied to Subarutex's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Same here!! I went through the same situation with the MO DMV a while ago... made me register it as a truck seeing as someone in the past had it titled as such... I *could* fight it I spose but probably not worth the hassle -
Double checking on alternators
cobcob replied to cobcob's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Thanks Skip... I'll double check on that. I know the alt that's in there was replaced less than 2 years ago with a reman one but other than that I'm not sure if it's internal or externally regulated Just checked, it's internally regulated, there's a 2 wire plug and then the 3rd wire attached to the bolt/stud. on the back -
The alt in my Brat puked on the way in to work today. Fortunately I had my solar panel for re-charging the battery so I should be just fine to get home this evening. Of course this HAD to happen the day that I'm driving 500 miles after work (not in the Brat though) I'm planning on pulling the alternator off my GL-10T wagon and putting it into the Brat. I've looked around on various auto parts websites and they give the same party number for the GL-10T alternator as for the Brat but I'm wanting to double check that it will work OK to do this swap? I'll be doing it about 3am on Monday morning when I get back from the trip, need to have the Brat on the road for the trip to work 5 hours later. All things being equal it won't take me longer than about 10 mins to swap alternators over... Thanks guys!

bad news about rust from the body shop
cobcob replied to hatchsub's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I had a quote of $2000 - $3000 to have the rockers on my '83 Brat repaired and they're not even very rusty! Generally the shop gives a higher quote because they're looking at it as being restoration grade repair. They told me there'd be at least 30 hours labor to make new rockerpanels that match the exact lines of the existing ones. Trim the fenders so you can fit bigger wheels in, that'll take care of the rust there, grind back the metal on the rockers so you can see the full extent of the rust there and then find someone who'll weld some sheet metal in there OR get some panel adhesive and glue the patch in place. -
Looks awesome mate! Any static from the coppers about that tire carrier blocking the license plate? Cops in Victoria ticketed me for 'obstructed plate' because my tow ball was covering the bottom center of the plate a little. (probably my bad for driving a VK Commodore with tinted out windows though)

hehehe, Mine's got some hidden in some sad places so it looks real nice but I hate to think of what I'll find when I strip the bedliner :-\ I had good luck with removing vinyl stickers from the exteriour side of my windshield with "purple power" dunno what it'd do to paint though...

The rust or the stickers

I'll allow it but only as long as you hurry up and get some more time at home so we can lift that baby!

hyrysc: You're more than welcome to come out if ya think you can keep up! Bluebaru: We definately need to get together sometime! Did ya get the gas mileage sorted out on Mountain Grizz? mykingcrab: Yeah, Finley Falls. I clicked her into 4x4 once I got into the dirt at the end of thouroughfare/finley falls road and stirred up so much dust I'm surprised it didn't wind up at your house! I think I was powering around the corners at 60+

Sounds like you've got way to many problems with that Brat there CD... I'll PM ya directions to my place so you can drop it off and I'll take it off your hands...
-
I feel for ya CD45!! Hopefully you'll get her squared away soon so we can track down a 5spd D/R for ya!

Thanks guys! I wasn't 100% certain of the H alloys at first but they've grown on me! It was only my 3rd dirt run in the Brat... A good long one this time and I'm really liking the handling of it! Clicked it into 4 wheel once I got off the pavement and into the loose stuff and churned up about 20 miles of dust cloud.

I took a break from terrorizing the dirt roads around here with 4 wheel power slides and snapped a couple of pics at a local river crossing...

Hmmmm... 5 4x8 sheets of 5/8" drywall, 1 4x8 sheet of 3/4" flooring, 12 2x4x8' studs in one trip, and 8 bags of R19 insulation in the next trip. (1982 Brat) (I have pics at home...) -
Tom, If it ain't that big of a job then tackle it yourself ey? Don't reckon it'd take ya more than a few hours on a Saturday...
-
Try McMaster.com... they've got a LOT of screw fasteners at VERY reasonable prices. I used some of their distorted thread lock nuts for the rockers on my '79 Chevy. Got 100 nuts shipped to my house CHEAPER than getting OEM replacements and they were the same grade of fastener
