  1. This is very common, unfortunately. Usually, you can remove the shift rod from the trans and heat bend it to help clear. Also, you can slightly hammer on the boot hole. These are the two most common fixes. r/ PK.
  2. The EJ lift is a pain - too many variations. I have Zap's kit 90%, he should have it in two weeks. (yep, count'em two) There are 24 blocks (not counting rear sway bar) and 4 strut extensions. M10 and M12 bolts of various lengths, extended steering shaft, extended anti-pitch rod, radiator hose. I think open source may be a good idea > Linux Lift Kits r/ PK
  3. Based on personal experience and like symptoms, I would speculate that you have a worn slot or key on the timing belt gear that allows play on the crankshaft causing erratic timing. First pull the v-belts off the and see if you can wiggle the crankshaft pulley. Then prolly pull the crank puilley off, and timing cover to see the timing belt gear/cog. Mine was worn and allowed the gear to move a few degrees back and forth - not good. Hopefully the slot is okay and the pulley, gear and/or key can be replaced to fix. Best of luck, anyone else concur? r/ PK
  4. It IS tell-tale signs of a bad fuel filter. I thought there were two fuel filters on the Sube - anyone confirm? r/ PK.
  5. Daaaaaaaamn! Beautiful wheels too. Two more inches will be perfect. r/ PK
  6. This was sent to me a while back, so I don't have any more info. Enjoy: Lowered Hatch r/ PK
  7. ... you are all right on everything else. Thread can be dead, but it'll take more than a weekend for me. Two lift kit builds, then two installs, then two complete drivetrain swaps, and still some WTFs, and, and, and that's a lot of labor, LOL. I thank you all for the info! (good one Tim on radiator and cooler lines). Between here and mikeshoup's thread, I think I have enough. ... Actually now I thinking an EJ swap might be easier . Great place, this USMB 'tis. cheers. r/ PK.
  8. Thanks so far. I need to clarify. I want the turbo as it has more power, power steering, air cond, all the niceness, and I DO want it to be 4 or 5 speed vs automatic 'cause I hear turbo Brats with manual trans are peppy and a lot of fun. The son wants an automatic no matter what - and he doesn't need the turbo power, and the NA will be very reliable for him - only 96k miles - so case closed on that issue too. (sure, I could just give him the turbo Brat and I live with the NA and no PS or AC, etc - but NNNOOOOooo - I want it! LOL.) The whole idea is I have everything to swap between cars, without any cost of buying either trans and its associated parts for conversion. So it's a win-win for both dad and son... except for labor. My concerns are about how much labor, and if I am missing some steps or other non-compatability issues. I.E. are front axles the same for manual and auto trans? r/ PK
  9. Cool Mick. Now get a license plate assembly from a 1st gen Ford Bronco (the type that flip down, so the plate is visible when the tailgate is down) and mount it on the upper left side of the tailgate. r/ PK.
  10. Hello All, On paper, this looks like a no brainer, but I would appreciate some USMB experiences and advice. Situation: I have two nice Brats - an 82 4 speed and an 83 turbo 3AT. My son definitely wants the auto trans, and I definitely want the turbo. They are both getting lift kits, so no worry on tunnel clearances. So I swap the trans, bellhousing/clutch/TC etc, rear diff, driveshaft, AT crossmember, pedal assembly and shift linkage. Is this easy as pie? ... or is there more? E.g. exhaust routing, speedo cable, reverse light wiring, etc? Thanks, r/ PK
  11. Normally, the shift lever is bent just a bit, but many hammer the boot hole slightly on the lower right to clear reverse travel. Also, possibly your shifter bushing is worn and shifting requires more than normal throw distance. There is a fix for that here on the USMB. r/ PK
  12. Hello All, Can someone explain what this does to get more power and better MPG? Loyale Performance Chip I dunno. I am skeptical, but thought I would throw it up here for the board to comment - opinions and/or experiences welcome, thanks. r/ PK

    Hatch Patrol?

I am back in the game - you will make WCSS9. r/PK ...as will I.
  14. You can tow an auto short distances BUT should not exceed about 20 mph. Unbolt the driveshaft at the rear diff (4 bolts) then move it sideways and just strap /rope it to the exhaust or other body part. Then use the tow dolly. Good luck. r/ PK
  15. Not the cheapest choice, but I have bought a Y-pipe with catalytic from PartsAmerica.com, and it was a perfect fit: Y-pipe Good luck, r/ PK.
  16. I believe Chef Tim did this. Put out a holler for him - he's been back - ooray!
  17. Not to hijack, but I had a '91 Taurus SHO 5 speed that for years I drove like Batman. Fast as hell. On trips to Reno and Vegas, I always got 25-27 mpg, which included frequent spurts into three digits, with total comfort and reliability. While the typical Taurus isn't a SHO, it's still a nice car. My '83 Turbo Brat with auto trans gets 17-18 mpg @70. I drive 74 miles per day commute and she just purrs . This EA81T is reliable as heck and the temp gauge stays at center all day... I think taller tires would help MPG immensely, or driving at 55 mph (argh). but alas I am selling her next week too:(
  18. Sounds like clogged fuel filter(s). r/ PK
  19. EZ, I'll give ya a call this week... for both the 4/3 bolts and the EJ lift (so close). (I have taken time off cause the "thrill is gone" (BB King)) - BUT - and it's a big butt - I now have a few Subes - two of 'em turbos too - wheeeeee - I am getting back in the schwing! r/ PK
  20. I have done the denatured run 5 times - all xlnt very low if not zero emissions. Only once did it smell like a Top Alcohol Dragster - lol. Have everything else proper because it's $12/gal. Good luck. r/PK
  21. Hello All, I have this friend who has a turbo Brat with 3AT, and is getting about 16 mpg. He drives 70-75 mph for a 30 mile commute and the engine spins at ~ 4100 rpm. Very smooth and runs like a top... but the mileage is sucky. If he puts larger tires, e.g. 25-26" to get the rpms down near 3500-3600 - will the mpg get better? Or is the 3AT too much of a drag on the efficiency? Those with EA81Ts, can you post some real world mpg figures? Thank you, r/ PK.

    Kits

The long and short of it is we ventured into standardizing kits at a standard 3.5" lift for economies of scale. But we still get requests for 3" and 4", a few 2" , etc. and some for steel and others for aluminum. LOL. ...so, we are re-tooling and trying to modular-ize components for use across the EA81/82/EJ spectrum. To do it efficiently, we need to stop orders, complete the re-design and raw stock and bolt purchases, and start fresh. It will be still the same great BYB product. I will get to emails and still quote prices, just not firm delivery dates for now. Thank you so much for patience. r/ PK.

    Kits

Apologies to all who I have not replied yet. Due to logistics and priority changes, we will not have kits available for about two months. I am very sorry. If you wish to wait for a BYB kit - that is xlnt. Otherwise SJR has a great selection of proven kits too . Sincerely, Patrick "PK"
  24. I've been away if you've tried OZified. I will get to emails this week. If you've emailed BYB in OZ, he will forward it to me... and I will answer as well. Thanks. Cheers, PK pkdavis@ozified.com
  25. Zap, my friend, I am so sorry I missed this year's show. Special accolades to you, Ken, and the others who expend countless effort FOR THE CAUSE. (not for the money). Congrats to all those who got to enjoy WCSS8. For every one of you, there are at least ten other Sube enthusiests that regret missing it. Raspberry award and voluntary community service to the d1ckheads that got to enjoy/ruin it without responsibility or remorse. Eric, before you think of stepping aside, you need to unwind (more than just 4 hours) and breathe and have a moment of Zen to reflect. There are several WCSS items to review and consider, which we can talk at your convenience. Obviously, still a job well done. Sleep well, catch you in a few - r/ PK.
