Yep. You already have the beautiful Peugeot alloys I love. I would paint it (original color) and add the roll bar and an A-bar. It will look fabulous. Then lift it. r/ PK.
  2. Hi-lift jacks are the shiznit. Aside from being a jack, they can also be used horizontally with straps or tow ropes as if it were a winch or come-along... 3 feet a time... but usually enough to get you out of a stuck moment. r/PK
  3. Thinking of a Sube application is cool. I would first find out about the reverse drive... but then: Consider that these assemblies are designed for a propeller cutting through air. Its case, bearings and gears may not be up to the load that will exist between an engine and pavement, let alone the variations of transmission or tires. It may completely blow apart in 1st gear - dunno??
  4. "Tis true. Actually, Shady came along at a good time. Life was way too busy for me and I needed a hiatus from kit building. I was somewhat relieved that people were still being supported with kits while I drew down and conversed with the Dolly Llama. Lift kits can only improve with competition, so the Subaru world benfits. There will be less of the red print above and even more benefits in 2006 - I guarantee . r/PK
  5. Ozified variations use 6061 "T6" aluminum flat, round, and square bar. Scorpion uses solid aluminum blocks too. The tinsle/crush strength of the solid aluminum or steel tubing versions far exceeds the unibody of the Sube, and the weight savings of solid aluminum vs box steel are negligible. Typical complete kits are ~50 pounds. The concept of using aluminum tubing is a great one for those wanting the very best and I applaud thinking outside the box (pun intended)... though the thought of using TIG for each piece screams labor intensive. Also, I would estimate weight savings at 10-15 pounds, since you still need steel bolts, washers, pitch and steering mods. Then also, based on wall thickness, you may need to anodize or corrosion treat the aluminum tubing - eek, more labor. In reading my ramblings here, I didn't answer your question - "...is it strong enough?" IMHO - 1/4" wall aluminum tubing with TIG-welded top and bottom plates? - YES* r/ PK * PK does not claim to be a materials engineer and is not liable for his opinions. :-p
  6. It is my understanding that in Caliphonia, to be smog compliant, you must maintain all devices/equipment for either the engine or the vehicle of that year, whichever is newer. To clairfy: A newer engine in an old car must maintain all emission equipment to that newer year engine. An older engine in a newer car must maintain the newer car's emission equipment for the same engine. This of course is apples to apples. The engine must be offered in the car line of that year. When you vary engines between manufacturers, then you must apply to the ARB for a custom vehicle registration and smog compliance. You will still have to maintain emission equipment for the newer of the two. It can be done through a quagmire (OH YEAHHH - OW!) of paperwork. r/PK
  7. When I was up for Hood River, and needed to fill up, I unknowingly got out, swiped card, and began fueling - at least 1/3 full before technician came running out to stop me..... now if he'd only do my windows...
  8. Moderator, please delete duplicate post in Off Topic forum. I posted here too because I can't wait for delayed posting in Off Topic (no disrespect, job offer requires timely submission.) Hello All, I have a remote opportunity for a job transfer to Salem. I like the 100-degree desert a little more than the 20-degree mountain, unless I'm skiing. Aside from the pure beauty and being able to join the Hatch Patrol - what am I in for? the good? the bad? thanks in advance, PK.
  9. Peer pressure is over-rated. BUT.... if you want a little respect, you need to get it from another peer group. - so since you're close, I suggest you take a day trip up to Yosemite. Hikers, rock climbers, tree huggers galore. They'll love your Sube. The parking lots are packed with Subes. For respect from 4x4ers: Lift, tires, and a day in the dirt to hang with the best of them.
  10. Thank you, Ken - This one will land somewhere between Beauty and Beast {wink} with a prototype kit. p.s. love your avitar Looking forward to bringing OZified and BYB back into 2006 with efficiency and standardization. R/ PK
  11. Yeah Buddy! As a matter a fact - I may try the McBrat special 5/3 lift. <$1k - but she's a DL - but then she's straight with only a hint of surface rust. Still gonna need some love.
  12. Just got lucky and bought this today. It's an 82. But look Ma, no fun roofs! Feels good to have an EA again.
  13. For those wanting more tire on a stock 13" wheel: Kumho makes rally tires in a 195x70-13" size. Comes in both medium and hard compounds. http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires.jsp?tireMake=Kumho&tireModel=ECSTA+R700&vehicleSearch=false&partnum=97QR3R700K9A&fromCompare1=yes&place=1
  14. I must have your old cell # cause the guy who now answers wasn't impressed when I called him and said "hey Zap!" a couple times. Please email or PM your latest number - thanks, PK. p.s. I have a new number too, although the old should have a message with my new number.
  15. Thanks for that info too. Plan is to use new OB struts with original springs and tops (thus allowing a slightly larger tire). Lift kit strut extensions will have to consider the 1.5", so they will be shorter to keep all geometry in line. She's a 5 speed. r/ PK.
  16. Excellent. Thanks Zap! Ooohhh pretty pictures ARE worth a 1000 words (I see the bolts). I don't care if it's blasphemy, I'm going to lift the SS. I'll give ya a call within the next week. Have a great T-Day. r/ PK
  17. Hello All, Just to clarify - I know using Outback struts gives an additional ~2" in tire-to-coil perch clearance, allowing the use of taller tires. BUT, 1. Are the Outback struts physically longer overall than non-Outback/Legacy struts? How much longer? 2. If they are longer, then there would be a little or significant drive angle? .. I guess back to Q 1. - How much longer? thanks in advance, PK
  18. The spring perch is again the limiting factor in tire size. Stock Outback tires are about 26.6" and there's maybe 3/4" space. IMHO, 27.5" would be max. Lift kit will not help {yet}... however, John Mudrat does a strut mod to move the perch up another inch or so... With that (modded Outback strut), a lift kit and fender trim you could go bigger tires, maybe 29-30"? r/ PK p.s. keep in mind that non-Outback Legacy struts are limited to about 25" tires... so adding Outback struts and 27" tires would make a big difference, though a lift may still be necessary to avoid fender/tire rubbing. p.p.s. Will Outback struts without a lift kit cause slight driveline angles?
  19. I had a 1990 turbo Loyale AWD. Mine and this one should have a 4 speed auto 4EAT. I liked it! Overheated mine twice (read two head gasket changes). Air conditioner evaporator heats up the radiator. Have a new radiator and avoid using the AC under turbo load.

I had talked with Ken about shying away from the 4/3 as it requires the BFH for the strut extension clearence a wee bit. However, I have about 20 sets of 4" components still that I will continue to offer in both EA81 and EA82, and more if demand is there. ... thanks for the plug r/ PK (I think I need another Brat, hmmm)
  21. Try advancing the timing until she begins to ping (then back off a little or run premium) - woohoo @ $3+/gal. or put in an ea82 5-spd and run in 4th. (4th in 5-spd is lower ratio than 4th in ea81 4-spd), then you still have 5th for those 100mph downhills - lol. r/ PK
  22. Gentlemen, thanks for inquiring. We are back online - shipped one this morning, one going this week, and eight more in work. I will get to my emails tonight and tomorrow for those waiting. Big time regards and thanks for patience, PK
  23. I've alway felt the winch should not be permanently fixed to the front, but rather portable, where it can be moved to the rear also. More often than not, you want to get out of a problem, not farther into it. $0.02 r/ PK.
  24. Hi Guys, Just renewed my subscription to SubieImprezzaSport Magazine, LOL. I was hoping for a little more WCSS7 coverage. In this issue, there's a nice full-page red Brat in the front and then just one more page with 5 pictures (3 of them Imps), and a few words. Maybe timeframe was too short and there will be more in a folllowing issue. Still good reading. r/PK
  25. DYAAANNNG Nice. Kudos to the artist who designed that I gots to have one in the wheat longsleeved - XL. Hook me up Zap, thanks, PK.
