  1. ok.....got home from school today and parked my car.....came out about 1.5 hours later and i get this tapping noise......it almost sounds like extremely loud fuel injectors.......i can rev it a little and it just gets more frequent....i have a 96 legacy L with a 2.2...........PLEASE if anyone has any information about this let me know......things to test? whatever info you have i will take!.....thanks in advance for your time and help.....oh, car is about to turn to 190,000......i love subies my dear lord its been one thing after another for this car........is it safe to drive?..........it doesnt sound at all like a knock more like a constant clicking.....it doesnt seem to go away when warm...i let it idle and waited till the temp gauge on the dash was about half way up and it was still there......i was reading a post a while ago about were someone said you could try cleaning the rocker shafts because there was like a blocked oil passage for the lifter....does anyone know if this is true?......
  2. yes most of those will work.....if you can, just to be sure take the part your looking for to the JY with you....or pics in your cell of them... (at least thats what i do).....headlights,grill etc......
  3. lookin good.. ...i just bought the same exedy clutch kit for my 96.....so far so good......
  4. knock sensor on the 2.2 is on the drivers side under the cyl. #4 intake runner.....only 1 wire goin to it......if you do replace it make sure you torque it to the right spec.....
  5. its got to be so intimidating to talk to someone with so much knowledge of the subaru....im glad you figured out some of your problems with your car though.....
  6. i took a look at some pics and they seemed the same....look the exact same and mounted in same location......thanks legacy777....
  7. ive got a 96 legacy ej22 and the engine still runs like a top.....i believe im the 5th owner and between me and my boss have known all the owners (we both know they drove that suby very hard) i currently have 190,000 on it and i just lost 4th gear (5 spd manual trans) so today i replaced the transmission with one that has around 90,000 on it.....like i said though the engine runs great........if you like the car and feel secure in it.....than i would go ahead and keep it....that is one of the joys i get out of being a mechanic.... is whatever my car needs i do it and i KNOW its done right..... as others have said when it comes to your suby....the trans service and brakes shouldnt take long at all to do........again its all up to you........good luck with whatever you decide to do......
  8. i always wondered what the pressure exchange solenoid did.......thanks for the info aircraftengineer......
  9. I would think it is possible....maybe not likely but electricity does some weird stuff........
  10. i thought at one time i priced a new MAP sensor for my 96' legacy and it came up to like $350 from NAPA.....i could def. see why you would get a used one.....
  11. i would think they would do something like this because the car was vandalized....if they got to the interior they could have popped the hood and poared something into the oil filler neck.......prob. not likely but its a possibility.....
  12. ok....i see.......i have heard that some manufacturers only use the map sensor for diagnostic purposes.....is this what they are referring to...altitude......thanks for clearing that up for me nipper ( i guess the haynes manual is wrong than)
  13. alright guys......ive got a 1996 subaru legacy L EJ22 with a 5 Spd.........i could be mistaken but i thought that the MAP sensor and pressure exchange solenoid only came on the automatics and turbocharged models?.....i have a 5 spd non turbo and i have both of them mounted on the passanger side shock tower........what am i missing here......its the origonal engine and trans so nothing was taken off or swapped or anything...........
  14. i believe my MAP sensor is DENSO......i figure if they can make a MAP sensor right they shouldnt have any problems making a good oil filter.....personally i use the ones we have at work which happen to be NAPA.......
  15. ......thats what ive always done......tap that thing out with a punch.....you usually get a new nut anyways with the new axle.....so if u destroy it no big as long as it comes off......
  16. could always just go to http://www.kingsprings.com might be a little more expensive though... buying direct
  17. just throwing this out there....could it be a defective CTS?......
  18. man.... you and me both brother...i also have a 96 legacy and the drivers side bolt actually fell out on my way to school the other day......i was wondering what the noise was so i threw it in the air and like half of the front crossmember was hanging down....i believe i stripped out that hole.......unfortunately for me i have to replace the trans this weekend and am prob. just going to try to tap the hole to get some good gripping threads.....i dont believe there are nuts on the other end (if were talking about the same crossmember)at least if there are i have never taken them out......i just have the bolt that goes directly into the chassis/body..........
  19. check for a recent thread i started a few days ago....im having the exact same problem.....i have a 96 legacy ej22 with a 5 speed...it has 190,000 on it and i just almost completely lost 4th.....just like your says it started popping out and i had to hold it in now it just grinds.....take a look at my post.......i just bought a used one for like $500 out of a used legacy with about 90,000 miles....even comes with a 6 month warranty....hopefully this weeked i will get it all swapped out.......
  20. one test for the MAF that i always felt is reliable is.....with the engine running take the butt end of a screwdriver and just tap on the top of the MAF sensor a few times.....if the car stumbles or stalls....than the MAF is bad.......
  21. NICE!....yes welcome to the board...there are so many smart people here....i cant tell you how much i have learned from only being here for like 5 months......any questions.....post away!
  22. thanks grossgary..... i couldnt really think of any other way to do it.......JB Weld.... no just kidding........you know it is really amazing how repetition helps you do things......this will be the 3rd time i have had my trans out and now i know like every single bolt size and step i have to take and were to cut corners......
  23. ok well i found out that one of my bolts for my front cross member came out......so that was the awful noise i was having......all mounts are good and linkage is tight........i tried to put it in 4th again today and BAM it pops right out........also 1st gear is starting to whine........all this on top of the need for a new Viscous coupler....well rather than deal with everything seperately i ordered a used Trans out of another 96' in Rhode island....the place is called LKQ....we use them for pretty much every engine and trans. we replace at work......it even comes with a 6 month parts warranty.....i spoke with them extensively and they said if anything happens internal within those six months they will get me another trans for FREE.....so i said "does that include the center diff." he said YES......so i got another trans on the way....hopefully here by thursday they said......they also said that it was out of a Subaru with 93,000 miles.........all that having been said I paid around $500 for it including delivery............Back to the bolt that fell out......is there any way to kind of rethread that bolt hole (its in like the body of the car) i noticed it was almost fully stripped and was thinking about running a tap through it....any other ideas?....also the thing that was weird was that while the hole is like completely stripped the bolt threads are almost perfect........nonetheless if anyone has anything they think will help or any comments please post......i hope that i am closing in on the end of my trans problems........:-\
  24. thanks a bunch mellow....i have been wanting to see one of those reports for my sub. for a while.....
