  1. alright i just got back from whistler so i can post our outcomes... while me and Jim's observations are the same, we have yet to actually come to a conclusion... at first when we put the clutch disc on and started spinning it the rear output didn't budge... which got my mind going, "BAH!" but it HAS been sitting for 4 or so years... and it free'd up after a little movement... now what we did is we locked one of the front driveshafts and left the other open with an axle cup left on it for some leverage... now that i think about it after loosening up the gears we should have unlocked the front axle we had locked and see if all the outputs spun without interference... also... when he had the driveshaft in the rear and got me to spin the clutch disc i couldn't hold onto the cup without it spinning and not very much power was being sent to the rear... mind you i dunno how hard jim was squeezing the shaft... (i assume none or very little?) now that i think about it perhaps the reason i was having such a hard time holding onto the cup while spinning the clutch disc is because the rear output shaft hasn't gone through a diff yet... meaning there was 3.7x more torque going to me then to him...? i dunno... we've yet to draw any conclusions really... he still believes its a 2wd trans... i guess only getting one into the car and actually trying it out will give the best idea of how much power actually goes to the back... more tests!:-p (or we could just leave it be... i'll run full-time 4wd and he can keep playing with the part-times...)
  2. if your really that worried about your ECU becoming accustom to it just unplug your battery for 5-10 mins and it'll reset... nothing to worry about...
  3. ya i am super glad my skid plate has been on the car... i'd have a bashed up oil pan by now! actually after my last oil change i don't bother putting it back on because it was so bent... it practically sprang off the car when i took off the bolts... so its bent now and they aren't easy to bend back into shape...(of course)
  4. this is sweet...now i want to do the 3rd eye conversion on my brat! but tell me... besides it just being really cool, does it actually produce a good amount of light? the stock headlights really do lack IMO... (looking into getting BMW aftermarket headlights! my eventual dream is to fit HID lights... but ya...) and with the 3rd eye you can change the bulb and get something more high power... (ie. H4 bulbs...?) and last... just to make sure i have this right, the 3rd eye came on 80 and 81 cars right? (just to make sure i look in the right places) thanks!
  5. thats awesome! now you can put it through more punishment then ever before!:-p got any pics?
  6. actually i got it in Kamloops from a guy who is a stage rally driver... he was using an RX as his rally car... then he smoked a rock! it was sitting in his back yard and his son(i think) parted it out... he's a friend of a friend of mine and all i had to do was go pick the stuff up... went up there, gave him a case of beer as payment and took as much as i could... along with the tranny i got the engine, harness, ecu, steering column, front/rear supension(with brakes) and the LSD... all for a 20 dollar case of beer! i am going to use the trans in my 79 brat... along with an ej22...
  7. set of the trim pieces that go around the door handles? also the bottom plastic pieces of the doors on the inside... preferable black... also are there the peices that came in the fake wood grain (guage cluster trim thing, glove box door and control panel trim) available in black?
  8. my 79 brat has had some really weird cooling problems... my rad has been leaking a little bit... out a hose it seemed... so i tightened it... seemed to fix it... still might leak a tiny bit... so i topped up the radiator and continued... my car has an aftermarket overflow on it... and it was empty... so i put a smidge of water into the overflow so it wouldn't run low again... even with the rad completely full i've NEVER had any fluid go into the overflow... but after driving it for a day or so the overflow was filled to the brim and was squirting fluid all over the engine bay... and of course... the rad was near empty... the fluid wouldn't go back into the rad so i had to drain it back in... i've been doing this for a while now, overflowing then pouring it back into the rad... the car works better when no fluid is in the overflow it seems... but even if the rad isn't completely full itself... now it does over heat... if i drive it hard (like i almost always do) it will overheat... my fan is hard wired on... so what might this be? thermostat? radcap?
  9. yee haw! see Jim over here is a suby guru as long as you don't throw anything funny at him like an RX... he's never worked on one or even seen one if i'm not mistaken... (really quite rare up here) and its off an 87 i think... or higher... but not prior to 87... this would also be the first time i've been 100% right about something with him... so this is a grand victory for me indeed!:-p oh and please... everybody chime in and once again say that i'm right... rub it in...!:-p
  10. alright i just got off the phone with subie jim in maple ridge and we started a lively debate... the RX trans that i have sitting under a tarp is a very nice trans... we all know and love it because it is of course FULL-TIME 4WD... he doesn't believe me on this... first lets make sure i have it right... 4WD is on ALL THE TIME... no if's and's or but's... if i were to lift up the car and drive it in mid air the front AND REAR tires will spin... basicly what i'm getting at is that it IS NOT FWD...(back end gets power aswell!) then the centre locking diff locks the front and rear together giving it a 50/50 split just like the normal 4wd's... when the centre diff is off power STILL GOES TO THE BACK WHEELS!!! saying that lots so i get my point across... now he believes different... he believes that it is FWD just like the rest of the 4wd trannies... with a couple differences... he believes the centre diff switch engages the 4wd... so to clarify... the car is in FWD UNTIL the diff switch is activated... then it becomes 4WD and locked 50/50 like a s/r trans... then with this you can run d/r in FWD... (ie. 2Lo) WHO IS RIGHT??? is the RX a FWD CAR!?!?!
  11. that is absolutely hilarious! that was one HARD hit... John sure can make em! and FYI the geo tracker, suzuki sidekick and asuna sunrunner are all the same car... whacky GM and their different brands...
  12. heh i did this once... didn't get quite the same responce... but since its here i might as well tally it up... this is in canadian bucks... -1300 for car -50 for plugs/filter/blah -300 for clutch/seals/machined flywheel/fluids -70 for flywheel bolts(after somebody at school torqued them to 120 ft/lbs and had to get them airmailed from oregon while teacher getting some that he didn't tell me about... which i also got charged for...) -20 for axle(thanks jeff! it would have been 520 from the dealership) -70 for barings and throttle cable -20 for brake rotor(thanks Jeff! would have been 80 from dealer) -70 for other set of barings, cable, and hub from John that got lost in the mail(stupid canada post) -180 for day permits(6 of them i think) -50 for trailer to get it in Canada -750... paid for VI and a SHOP to fix the rest... ugh... -50 new rims -80 more barings, seals... -350 exhaust all nice and pretty, yet still only half done... -60 battery ~100ish for Jim which has been an AMAZING help for me and every penny i've given him has been 110% worth it... giving me a total of $3520... and still to come! (stuff i either have to get done or haven't paid for yet...) -80 new new rims -50 rebuild alt -70 recore rad -120 new fenders dreamy stuff -800 repair all rust and repaint it with somthin' fancy(i've planned it in my head...) -500 pugs with fancy street tires on em for all that racin' i do...:-p -500 reseal and make pretty ej22 -installing RX stuff and ej22 is still in the works... so ya with all the stuff i'm 'going' to do to it it goes well over 5000... but who actually does what they say they are 'going' to do...:-p so ya... all in all tallying up all your spendings is kinda fun... kinda depressing too... buuuut it makes me smile...
  13. wait, are you talking about a little one about 8-10'' long and about the width of a pen? there are two that go on the air box... one wraps around the top of the air box and attaches to the little can on the air funnle doo-dad... the other one is VERY important! it attaches to the intake manifold and without it on you have a MAJOR vacuum leak! it attaches to the manifold on the passenger side... look hard... its right ontop the intake right near a little vacuum can... plugs onto that then into the air can on the bottom...
  14. your sis sounds like she needs to learn a lesson! i say you should 'accidentally' leave the door to her truck open...
  15. my dog used to chew on stuff all the time... we got him (Sol the mighty golden retriever) when he was 4 or so weeks old... after he discovered (many attempts later) that the glass sliding door is indeed solid and that ramming it does nothing, he moved onto chewing things... the most he ever chewed on (that wasn't intended for chewing) was some cheap ikea chairs... but after that we hammered (metaphorically of course) on him... he is now 7 years old... hyper as hell and somewhat annoying but still well trained... anything that falls on the floor is his...(food and the like...) but even then if its something odd he'll look for permission... pop bottles he won't touch unless we say so... shoes seem to have no appeal to him, but he won't even pick up a stick unless we make it an object of play... actually now that i think about it he only has 1 toy... a squeeky(sp?) ball, which has had the squeeker removed due to raw hatred... oh and of course lacrosse balls because of their exceptional boucing abilities making them extremely enjoyable for retrieving... my advice to you is to have LOTS of other toys... embrace when they play with them, and open the gates of hell when they touch anything else... with that said, make your sister feel exceptionally bad for letting her dog ruin one of these supreme automobiles...:-p
  16. that sounds like textbook accelerator pump failure... its a pretty easy fix... however if you're going to replace your accel pump you might aswell rebuild your carb completely... to test if its the accel pump and not some other problem: pop off your air can... then hold your choke open with a screwdriver or something... get a light and shine it down into your carb... now with your other hand turn your throttle... first thing you should see is that arm at the very top of your carb on the front move up on a pivot... and you'll see on the other side of the arm a little rubber boot... you should see that get compressed down... under that little rubber boot is your accel pump... it shoots raw gas into the carb so it doesn't die when you stomp on the throttle... (do all this with the car off... its easier...) now look into your carb with the choke open...(you might need to turn the key to the on position as to get the fuel into the float bowl) pull the throttle open and closed... just keep popping it... you should see gas getting squirted into your carb... if you don't, your accel pump is dead... check that then tell us the results!
  17. yes they are 13'' rims... after i get em cleaned i'm putting my snow tires on em...(i run snows all year round... or at least thats the plan...)
  18. ya they are 13''...i've yet to find more information... maybe i'll google JPC when i get time... (late for school right now!)
  19. hehe... another guy wanted the rims so i went out one weekend and took them off and hid them behind the camper... i went and picked them up the next weekend... i saw the way you looked at them rider... you had that glint in your eyes and your hand reaching for a 19mm rachet and the other hand for your wallet!:-p lol...but you DID walk away from jim's with a super nice loyale... well actually you drove away...
  20. posting this here too as to find people to identify these rims... i got a set of these rims off subie jim in maple ridge and i've looked on here a couple times but never been able to find these... they are 6 spoke alloys (very odd especially for 'back' then) and they look like they say JPC on the center cap... dunno though, have a look for yourself... also they have 'Made in England' stamped into them... while fairly curb rashed these are still sweet rims IMO... and i was amazed when i had gotten those tires off... they are only like 5lbs each... they'll need some cleaning and whatnot but they are deffinatly going on the car!

  22. i've been trying to deside which colour to paint my 79 brat and i've taken a fancy to this colour i've only seen a couple times on some of the newer cars...its a dark blue colour but with a hint of purple in it... i dunno about the rest of you, but i like the colour but i've been unable to find pics of it... (i'll admit i haven't looked super hard... just google and subaru.com/.ca)i've seen it on something along the lines of a 2003 impreza RS and on i think a WRX wagon...(might have been just an imp wagon) and i'm pretty sure i saw it on a forester...colour code and a pic would be great!
  23. man now i'm even more excited about making my gen1...i want to do the body work on it this summer... i've never done any body work on a car before but i've watch a lot of overhauling so i'm feeling pretty cocky... :Phow are you going about shaving your door handles, locks and mirrors? do you just mean completely removing them... or...? are you going to remove the trim? i was also thinking of doing something to the side maker lights... use some smaller and sleeker looking ones... after i do the body i'm moving over to the performance stuff... i'm skipping the EA stuff... got an ej22 with RX drivetrain lined up and waiting... then i'll be able to join the ranks of you, 75subie and garner! :Dwhat colour were you planning on painting your car???
  24. filling up my radiator... wow its leaking... its REALLY leaking! jeeez where is it coming from!? is my radiator ruined??? *10 minutes of searching and pondering* OHHHHH drainplug... gotcha... *********************************** as posted on the usmb a little bit after i first joined... i'd been having coolant leaks for like a week before i figured it out after getting some help... had been coming from the top of the engine block just below the air can on the driver's side... where the heater hoses were... lots of pondering and wondering... then i tightened the clamp... problem solved... (i then proceeded to clean all the leaky fluids off the driveway...) ************************************** right after starting my rear-disc brake conversion on my 79... told the parents, "it won't be a problem if it doesn't work, i can just put my old brakes back on... its a bolt on mod!" while removing the brake lines... *SNAP!* "what was that?" "oh just the bleeder nipple... OHHHH NOOO THE BLEEDER NIPPLE!!!" *no turning back now* ******************************** you smell gas? must be the gas station... i still smell gas... no gas stations to be seen... hmmm... *pulls over into chruch parking lot, leaves car running, pops the hood and takes a look...* all seems ok under the hood...still smell gas... i look on the other side of the engine... gas is gushing out... GUSHING... BAHHHLALA! when rebuilding a carburator, be sure to tighten the float bowl drain plugs...
  25. alright this would probably be getting a little to complex but what if you relocated the oil pan to somewhere else? i know they do it on motorcycles... relocated it to somewhere out of the way and just run the pickup tube to a where ever you run your new oil 'canister' and have some sort of pickup system to catch the oil and bring it to the canister... then i could see the clearance being increased by a huge amount... that would solve the problem but i don't know how happy the oil pump would be with such a system...?
