  1. So its getting frosty up here... and at first it was fun... drifting around frost covered streets... but then one of my worst nightmares appeared... ROAD SALT!!!! Oh no!!! this being the first winter of the brat being on the road i'm extremely worried... i don't want to run my hand over the fenders and have a bunch of rust chunk off....(there is rust on them already so i'm realy worried...) is there any short term rust protection solutions? i've head of people spraying there underbody with pam and other such things, then hosing it off once and a while... does something like this work? i can't afford right now to have my whole underbody strayed profesionally with real undercoat... so i dunno... i've been going so far as to dodge the big clumps of the stuff on the road... but i'm sure its not really doing much... what do i do!?!!
  2. oh i completely forgot about non-engine related mods... well not to many people know this...(shhh!) but the rear disc brakes of an RX or something will bolt right on... (SHHHH!!!):-p second... if you look around on here you'll find that there is a guy who makes sweet struts for us gen 1'ers... his name is Mike... can't remember his user name... if you ask him to make you a set i think he will... i think his price is like 150 bucks or something? (don't quote me on that) and using these struts you'll be able to run RX springs... which are slightly stiffer then yours and other models... shocks are always a plus... ummmm... you're probably gonna want different seats... i always find i slip outa them when i turn sharply... (not to meantion they aren't amazingly comfortable...) you can always make strut braces...(only in the front... rear is torsion bar...) i went kinda nuts with the ea71 mods eh? getting an ea81 is probably better... its a more easily modded engine... but the ea82 you can't really use... people do use them, but they are 2 inches wider then your frame... so i'd stay away from that... the ej22 is i think like half an inch wider... so if you want to be able to take the cam covers off your gonna have to notch it about half an inch...
  3. holy crap... freaky... right as i looked at that guy "mc hammer-can't touch this" came on... (shhh i got it as a joke... just so happen to find its way into my playlist...) he's dancing in perfect sync!!! RUN!! sorry for the hyjack...
  4. you can get a delta cam... just do a search and it'll show up... but mind you to actually change the cam you have to take the whole engine appart(i think)... weber carb... ummm... for the LSD... you need to get a GL-10 or RX or something... like an 87... they have LSD's(not all of them did though)... if you go to a j/y you might be able to find one.... actually check though... there is a tag on the back of the diff that will say LSD on it... and you'll have to change the gearing from 3.7 to 3.9 for it to work... there is instructions on the USRM for that... now if you want some uber power outa this thing... get rid of the manifold and bolt on 2 carbs right onto the heads... although i've only heard of this being done... then you can plane the heads to your hearts content... you'll get lots of power... but i dunno how do-able it is... you gotta REALLY want this to make something like that work... thats obviously a little extreme... maybe a dual carb manifold (hard to find but not impossible) and if your really nuts... dual webers... that'd be sick... anyways... lots of options...
  5. Ugh... I'm going next year!!! that looks like SO much fun... i just gotta wait for my snow driving "lessons"...(its pretty much, i drive up to whistler in front of my dad... a bunch of times... in the snow... then i can get up to kamloops and get my rx stuff! ) looks like a blast! great pics everybody!
  6. This is just some an idea i had... but what if you make your own speedo gear box? I was thinking maybe getting an old speedo cluster(or 2), taking it appart, then have the cable from the trans going up into your "custom" gear box, then using off the shelf gears(from something i dunno) then perhaps making a super short cable that'll go into your guage... just a thought... and it doesn't need to be behind the dash either... (thats where i'm ussuming these things go) you could have it down near the trans and run the normal stock cable... and having your "gear box" down on the trans... obviously my idea is a rough one... but i don't think it would be to hard to make if you have the fab skills and the time...
  7. hey ya i kinda wanna know that too... everybody here just seems to throw accurate guages to the wind and just do the "i'd say 50-ish...":-p not many people take apart there trans... so hmmm... my question would be what might fit? would you need a smaller gear or a bigger gear? my guess is smaller... (and i haven't gotten to that rx yet... don't worry i haven't forgotten about your guage!)
  8. i've had the 79 brat up to 85... its really solid at that speed... but everytime i can get it that fast, i run outa road...farthest i've driven is to wcss7... which was i think 250miles?
  9. well lucky me my 79 doesn't have any fender shields... but after wcss7 i spent probably 20 mins with a hose spraying out my fenders... clump after clump of mud came out... it was awesome...
  10. if i were you, i'd take out both the rear axles for now... just run it in 2wd... so you can get to a j/y and get yourself a nice used diff... pop the new one in, put the axle back on, and drive to your hearts content... having the rear diff lock up mid voyage would be a problem... i'd avoid it as much as possible... Good luck!
  11. get somebody with little hands and let them have a go... i've lost the little pull thing a couple times and just shoved my hand down in there... you should be able to do it without unbolting the seat... but you may have to do that... good luck!
  12. thats going to be a decent drive for my gen 1... but it drove home last year on bad wheel bearings, a clicking axle, and lacking a speedometer for half the trip! w00t i'm so there... where ever it may be... Eric? Ken? what say you?:-p nah seriously... there is no rush... not yet anyway... still got lots o' time to figure everything out... and also, if i get this straight... that land is AA land? so actually paying for the venue, like the last 2 years(i unno about before that since i wasn't there) won't be an issue? obviously i'm not saying the show will be free, (it practically was already) but it should save Eric and Ken dishing out extra bucks like they did the years before... (thanks you guys!) but ya, i'm there!
  13. and if you happen to make another one, and just so happen to have an extremely large box, and just so happen to have my address stamped all over it, and it somehow gets into the mailbox... then more power to ya! if not... pics will go great!
  14. hmmm when did i get mine? spring break of 03? or 04? i can't remember... but its only been on the road for some odd 3 months...
  15. hey that looks pretty sweet! just a thought, maybe you should paint the little pillar/bracket thing going down the middle of the grill flat black, so you can't see it so much... give it a cleaner look i'd think...? and maybe you should get an older suby logo... like from 80 or something? i'm pretty sure they all had a bigger logo then the newer wagons... might not look to bad with it on there... either way, looks good!
  16. oh and hey... i think it'd look pretty slick if you had some spot lights(not big ones) going through the spoiler... have them inset into it... use a little fiberglass... i think it'd look super sick... i wanted to do this with my cap... but i pretty much never run with the cap on... so it'd be a waste of time and money to buy lights then have them sit in the backyard... although when i need the cap its always very handy... just a thought...
  17. if i recall correctly, on my cap, all the mounting spots are run along the bottom of the cap... how you getting that thing to stay put? i'd hate to see that fly off on the freeway and hit some unsuspecting soccermom and her minivan...
  18. jeez Corky... always scarin' away the ladies...:-p ya good question? you get bored of the USMB already?(HAH not likely! )
  19. if you get a sealed battery then you can put it sideways, and it will fit like a charm... and putting the CAI on the side where you'd put the battery is a better place... its slightly cooler air there... if you have the CAI sitting where the spare tire spot is, all the hot air from the radiator and engine get blown onto it... hotter air, less dence, less power... on the side is a better spot... but really... its going to be fractions of a hp... doesn't really make a difference... just thought i'd share...
  20. from what i gather there just isn't enough room in the diff for a locker... or its just not compatable... either way, if you were to try, and succeed, you'd be the first... LSD is still good... and you maintain drivability... if you want a good trail rig though, welding is the best option... and its cheap... just get good at popping out one of the axles... when your not on the trail, take out an axle... then there is no binding issues... and just have it in the back... if you do it a few times, you should be able to get it down to 10 mins... Good luck!
  21. even though my dash isn't cracked... i'm still probably going to get one of these when i have the money to redo my interior... i don't like brown... its so... brown... and its going to start cracking... the thing is warping up around the windshield dash vents... if i touch it at all, it will probably snap in 2... so redoing me interior... black or blue... or hey maybe go nuts with black and red! or black and blue! with new seats... hmmm... ah well... not enough money to do anything right now... hey this is becoming a hyjack... but a question for you all... how many of you like your fake wood trim?(those of you that have it...) i think it looks super tachy... and i was shocked to hear it was an option, and not standard material... well thats the 70's fasion sence for ya....
  22. Yes Welcome to the board! so ya, whats the story about your old soob? come on now, we are all nosy as heck!:-p welcome once again...
  23. we've had problems with my parents 01 legacy wagon... i dunno if they fixed this problem in the following year, but it will pop out of reverse whenever it gets to some speed, or the clutch is most of the way out... its not really a huge problem... not like i'm racing people in reverse (or racing people at all for that matter) its just kinda spooky when it happens... its just "POP!" and the engine just revs... now i usually hold it in reverse anyway... no biggy... but if you get it, and its still under warrenty, maybe you should look into getting it fixed... i know it was covered under warrenty... but i found out only after the warrenty ran out...(my parents aren't huge believers in extended warrenties or anything...) but ya, just take it into a parking lot... pop it into reverse, and get some speed going... have some fun, do some donuts, make a party outa it...:-p i'd say go for it though!
