the innner joint (doj) can make a ticking on acceleration aswell but not at cruise. and has it no relation to the steering

"oil level light" is actually oil pressure but no oil above pickup makes no pressure so its pretty much true.

Is there any diff between XT/Alcyone/Vortex?

blowing white smoke out of exhaust
BobBrumby replied to keck's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Some turbo heads are prone to cracking but it most probably due to bad head gaskets. Coolent in the oil and white smoke are normally due to a blown headgasket/s. Has it been over heated much? Might also be seals in turbo if its oil and water cooled but i dont know turbos. To do headgaskets you need to pull the motor. It probably aint a cracked block but head gaskets are quite labour intensive. But if you could do it yourself... -
I finally got my webberized brumby rejetted at a carb shop. Now it does not diesel (run on), hesitate from down low, doesnot ping in 2nd and 3rd at 4200rpm and can idle alright when its warm. There is just one thing about it, at idle every so often after 20-30 seconds I think it misfires, the tach drops about 50rpm and makes this bassy thud sound, (not metal on metal), thats the only way I can descibe it. Also the body of the car moves a bit but only for a moment while it hapens. If I rev it up to 1000rmp it doesnot do it. Has the problem got to do with ignition or fuel or am I being too vague? The mech also advanced the timing.

Thump when shifting from P to D...DOJ?
BobBrumby replied to Microracer's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Dont quote me on this but when you doj it just breaks and you are left with 0WD (zero wheel drive) as these subes dont have locking diffs. Just change into 4wd and you will have a rwd subie untill you fix it. Doj can make noise for ages before completely destoying themselves. I get the thump thump on decelleration. -
The verdict, running with over full mark while the oil is hot, does this do damage?
-
yeh in brisbane, no doubt. now i have fixed all the leaks i might just run it a bit lower so the oil level is never over bottom of the crank gear for the cam.
-
After doing a few seals and stuff I filled up the oil to just a little below the full hole on the dipstick. About a month later, today, I checked my oil out of interest once the car had warmed up to find it a bit over the full mark. Is it normal for oil to expand when its heated? And is the full mark for cold oil?

dont use compressed air as some brake pad use aspestos. Not good for your lungs:rolleyes:.

ea71/ea81/ea82 intake manifold???
BobBrumby replied to fastenova's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
If you can hunt arround for an ea82 one this would be better as they have bigger runners but you will also need get an ea82 top radiator hose and grind a little off if i remeber correctly. -
try a subaru dealer and you dont need any sealent.
-
Oh so these are the dual port heads, didnot read your post fully. I did this on my ea81 but with a closer inspection of your picture it seems it does not have the steel "spacer" thing, that the valve that puts air into your exhuast, through.
-
When my stud stripped i took it to an exhuast shop and they tapped a thread into the steel spacers where the asv valve connects to.

yeh plug where it used to get air from the air cleaner, or else you have the possibility of feeding your engine dirt once you do some offroading. Get the rubber reducer from top of silcencer and put it on the valve, once silecncer has been removed. Then put a spark plug in the other end of the reducer and its blocked.

Auto suction Valve help
BobBrumby replied to elcaminokurt's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
If you take off the plastic silencer and then take the rubber ruducer off the top of the silencer and put it onto the valve a sooby spark plug is now a perfect fit. -

Is my new Half shaft bad?
BobBrumby replied to phychotron's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I second doj, i get the sound on downshift. If you wanted to dodge it up you could just swap the doj with from one side to the other. Then they will be spining the other way and you get the noise on decell. I have also been told they can make noise for a long time before they break. -
Driveline question regarding 5 speed swap
BobBrumby replied to richieroo's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Yeh saw this only today on a show called "wheeler dealers", anyway they were lifting a suzuki sierra and used about 1 inch spacer with longer bolts, inbertween tail shaft and diff. No reason why it cant be done, wouldnot it be cheaper? How long does your spacer need to be? -
pull no. 1 spark plug, then insert finger into whole and turn crank untill the air pushing past you finger stops, go too far and it will start sucking air past you finger. Once you find where no air go past your finger this is tdc
-
Yeh subarus are just like big mechano or lego, but remember to use the reverse sequence of the tightening sequence when taking off the heads off. And clean all gasket surfaces really spiney before bolting them back down.
-
If they dont totally fill it with oil and you mount it horizontally it can leave an air buble over a bulk of the wirings and lead to overheating of the windings. This might explain why some people get stranded because of it and some ppl swear they can mount it at any angle with no bad effects. Luck of the draw, just a thought?

The bulk of the performance gains to be made is being able to run a wider gap for your spark plugs. Longer spark, better combustion.
