Looks like maybee my turbo's gone bad??
BobBrumby replied to tizzle's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
yeh he should laugh too, unless you have tough inspections. Having no cat makes your turbo spool faster. Any restriction after the turbo decreases performance and this is why you see really moded turbo's with no or only one muffler and straight pipe for the rest of the exhuast. But its illeagal in Australia and i supose most states in USA. -
The S in spfi stands for single so there is only one injector. I think there are some bosch injectors that have a higher flow rate but arenot a bolt in mod. Also I think U need the crank angle sensor or distrubter form the donor car aswell as manifold maf sensor, intake tract, wiring loom and y pipe for the o2 sensor bung. Similarly u can get a bung welded onto your current exhuast.

So where abouts in Aus are these bushes available, cause im in Brisbane the capitol city of Queensland(top right state)? Could you give me the url to the page where u got that table from?

1979 brat, e81 with dual range tranny trouble

yeh double offset joints can make a popping\knocking loud noise -
yeh i remember seeing this ea82 at an auctoin and it was fire damaged. There had been so much heat under the hood that bellhousing was more flat than round at the top. Like it had sagged a fair bit. A real eye opener

to see if your rings are cause the comp. problem pull a pug squirt some oil down there and now take the comp reading. If it increases its worn rings. If compression doesnot change atleast youve ruled something out.

What advice for overhauling my EA81 engine?
BobBrumby replied to Bratenstein's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
yeh and the gugeon pin plug under the waterpump gets rusted in tight so dowce it in water dispersent as soon as you take off the pump. Also when undoing the head nuts you have to do it in the reverse order of which there tightened in or it may get warped. Beforce you start buying gaskets and pumps make sure the heads aint warped and all tollerences are correct. -
I wont int. wipper on my brumby that does not have them. I had a look under there this arvo and found a 6 pin plug conector that has one yellow wire jumpered back onto the connector, this look like it came this way from the factory as its a propper clear plastic plug. Would this be where the 6 pin int. wipper module plugs? It only occured to me while I was writing this to check the gender of the plug but forgot to and its night now. Also do you have to remove the console peice where the radio is to be able to acsess the shroud where the wiper switch is? Because i removed all the screws but it was stuck and i ran out of time.

Welcome to the board, The over heating issue could be the t-stat stuck half open or most probable has the orriginal radiator it came with from the factory. Check over the rad and see how much fin rot its got and how much crust its got inside. Heat is the main thing that beats these soobies as their heads warp pretty easily so a new radiator would be a good idea if the old one's shot. I duno how to test a waterpump. Yeh the brakes could use a bleed but you have to asks someelse cause u have to do it in order to get it right. Does the car have a sweetish odour? While running do you get bubles in coolant? How many miles you got on your gl-10?
-
heh short of fabin up a manifold including theremostat stat and water cross over i dont like your chances. I think you need a connection bettween the two ports as this is what i have seen in stock and ram performance configuration. On the pic I saw they used some rubber tube between the ports and was approx. the same size at the pcv hose but a little bigger. There are stokc dual carb manifold but they are rare. As 85sub said go efi as its gots more power economy drivability n such. I believe you have an ea81 and a spfi fron an ea82 car will bolt on wiht minor mods. Theres a writeup in the USRM - Repair and Mod section, the button is at the top of each page . Even easier is a 32/36 webber and gives you almost the power of spfi but a little less economy.

EA81 overheating...with bubbles...
BobBrumby replied to Sister7's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
yeh just because you dont have coolent in your oil doesnot mean its not head gasket becuase all the oil passages may still be holding but just a coolent passage has blew its gasket between it and the cyclinder allowing air into the coolent system, explainin the bubles. Yeh a compression test would tell you which head has let go. Also if its the orriginal radiator it probaly 1/3 full of mud and all crusted up. But what ever you do dont use any stop leak or similar treatment as this will probaly not even work and will make your problem worse in the long run. -
Remember the SS Subaru? You should see it now.

Replacement Ignition Module?
BobBrumby replied to Ross's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Is it that your car just doesnot start when you turn the key but you get power to everything cept the starter? Why not rig up a switch like i have done in my brumby? Find a wire that has 12v with keys turned on (test light is handy). Then put a wire going from here to you arcade style button on your dash then a wire from the switch to the small Conecter on the starter solenoid. This would cost all up about $5 and you still need the keys to start the car. -
Could you make up something like this? Tho you would have to empty it occasionly. Um the scaling is a bit crap and it doesnot look like its got a top but you get the idea
-
you would also want the one wire going into the switch to be powered only when the keys are on e.g. off the coil, somewhere off ur sterio, so that you dont drain your battery while its parked.

'87 GL Hatch for $850...Good?
BobBrumby replied to mt700a1's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
yeh but if you snap a belt on the way to something youll be stranded on the side of the road. Yeh i beieve the check light does come at the intervill that it belts are meant to be changed -
An aqua ea82 wagon made a brief appreance in "True Lies" an Arnie Swarnegger movie. If I remember correctly Arnie crosses a road and there waiting for its five minutes of fame in traffic was the Aqua Soob, he probably walked within 3 metres of it so the movie going public got a good look at the beatie. Heh just thought i would post it up.

Yeh rear brakes and diff are bolt up. But as for rear susp. brat rear ends have a tourion bar and rx's have coilovers. You could probably do it as i have seen ea81 with rear coilovers. Yeh you could even throw in the seats. Yeh I am pretty sure the rx's have bigger rottors but ea81 and ea82 front suspension are a little different, for example the balljoint is a larger so you couldnot just wack the hub assy on the brat, so then you think why not use the ea82 controll arm but the ea82's are a bit wider so the lower controll arms are also wider so they cant be swapped into the brat without dramatically affecting geometry. And the strut top differs appearently. Not an ea82 expert but i think that the gist of the situation. For best results with the lsd fab up some mounts for the rear sway bar and take it off the rx's with rear diff and brakes. The fabin' is required as brat's didnot come with any rear swaybars stock.

De-emmision and voltage guage woes ????
BobBrumby replied to Frank B's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
The only reason why dumpong the emmission stuff would cause a performace increase is if there's a vaac leak. If your talking about the air injection system for the exhuast u can block it with just a spark plug in where the silencer used to go (you remove the silence first, its the big balck plastic bally thing and some plastic tubes attached extra tubes attached). I pulled all the emssion junk when the holley went on and the only vac lines you need are brake booster (off manifold), maybe vac selector for cabin heat (off manifold) and vac advance (from dizzy to ported vac port on carb. The rest you can remove and plug. As to its legality, i recon i could spin a storey to get be out of the sheet. If you have a multimeter you could try getting a voltage off the battery while its running it should be 12-14volts. Yeh its probably just rusty ground or dodgy meter. If you altinator was only puttin out 5 volts you wouldnot get very far in the car before the battery ran out. Good Luck -
Hehe i dont know about over in america but u cant get done here for dui over here for sleeping in your car with your keys drunk.

Heh I think I hav seen this scoob in person down at harry's dinner in Australia. Like heaps of people with sick cars used to go there mainly falcons (ford) and commodoors (GM). Untill some dood in a hotrod lost it while exiting the place hittin some people in the croud, the cops swarm it now and not many ppl have come back since. Hehe it was funny cause my mate couldnot belive people called SUbaru's scoobies n scoobaru's n sutch and then we sawed it, sortof prooved him wrong:rolleyes:. Yeh it even had that geen nos/n2 line on the intercooler. Nearly saw it there every week I went before the "incident". Heh dont get me wrong i think the air brushing looks sheet but what ever floats your boat i supose.
