Best year for EA82T chassis?
XSNRG replied to carfreak85's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I like 'em all but the '87/'89 is probably the best all around GL-10 Turbo Wagon in my opinion. Here's a few things I like about these models: Colored bumpers Nicer grille Better mirrors Superior Digi (this is a biggy) Steering wheel Side note: I don't want to start a debate but feel this needs clarification. There is only one subaru that came with a standard LSD like the RX, it was the '87 to '89 Full Time 4 Wheel Drive 5 Speed Turbo, it was never standard in any ('89 turbo) other model* *Information courtesy of Subaru of America. -
I think your looking for a EA82T pipe. Any pics of your car anywhere? What color is it? I have a pipe in Olympia if you don't find one up North. What is a "B" package? XSNRG

The stock carpet is the breathable type. That allows it to dry out quickly so it doesn't rust. I think ShawnW was talking about this, or maybe Mr McBrat.

I've done EA82 head gaskets without re-torquing with no problems. It's important that everything is clean, including the threads on the head bolts. The a drop of oil on the threads and on the washer before you torque. I've used the copper gasket sealant with good results, it's suposed to allow the head and gasket a minute amount of movement for thermal action. Check the head surface to be sure it's flat, I think they allow 15 thou. I purchased a CCR engine and they didn't reccomend re-torqueing, not sure what they do to the gaskets/heads.

ER27 to EA82 clutch interchange?!
XSNRG replied to Adam N.D.J.'s topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
The heavier flywheel is better for sure but I think you will want to stay with the stronger XT-6 clutch, I'm sure it's worth the extra toy certificates. I think you can mix and match the two. I found this on the XT-6 board, http://www.xt6.net/ www.subaru-engine-parts.com Here's the thread I found it in: http://www.xt6.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=1636&highlight=exedy There is a inexpensive clutch kit there, looks too good to be true, might warrant a call first? -
Welcome! Nice collection of Subaru's! Is a Superstation is it a station wagon? A turbo with a D/R, we didn't get those here except in the RX. We also didn't have turbo XT's in '88, only the XT-6 or FI, is that car Full Time 4WD? or 2wd? I would love to see oictures of the cars if possible! I have GL-10 turbo parts and some cruise control and trip computer pieces, are you replacing existing parts? can you send a picture of what you need? I'll try to help. XSNRG

Hi Esky, welcome! 1. They do in the states and probably worldwide. You didn't mention if you car is a auto or 5 speed trans or if it has a turbo. There are two different ratios, the turbos and autos are 3.7, the manual, non-turbos are 3.9. The RX is 3.7, if yours is 3.9 you can swap the slug from the RX into you case, there is a great write up on this elswhere on the board. 2. '87 to '89 there was a Full Time 4 wheel drive 5 speed available, dual range in the RX, single range in all others. The transmission is a self contained unit using a mechanical center differential with a vacuum operated locking collar to lock the center diff like a 4wd. On hard surfaces you would run with the diff unlocked or locked on loose surfaces. There was also a Full Time, 4 speed auto (4EAT) trans available from '88 to '91, available in some turbo cars and some N/A XT's. These us a electronic/computer controlled clutch pack to connect the front and rear. This information is USA specific, may very by location:-) Cheers!

pushbutton 4wd won't engage
XSNRG replied to thealleyboy's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
morgantruce, the tranny swap is basically a direct bolt in. I did this swap on a turbo car. For yours, all the mounting points, clutch, axles, driveline etc. are the same. I think the wiring harness' will plug right in, you'll have to check. I know they do on the earlier models, not sure about the '94, but probably will. You'll need to switch the console pieces. When your done it will look and act like it came that way from the factory. The only thing you won't have is the 4WD Low indicator on the dash, it will just read 4WD in low and high. It's not a bad job and well worth it. -

heating in my GL not working...
XSNRG replied to barel's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Does your heater work after running water through it? Interesting pictures, Your old Subaru is a mess. It looks like somebody was hurt in the accident, are they OK? How did the damage happen? That car has some intersting chrome trim around the fenders, do you know if that is factory Subaru stuff or a aftermarket accessory? -
helicoil and valve cover leaks
XSNRG replied to Beowulfs_Ghost's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Ive haven't had a problem yet. I've always acheived torque, none were helicoiled that I know of. I have had other bolts not torque and used helicoils there. I've had around 20/25 of these motors apart. -

XSNRG replied to subiemech85's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Hey Subiemech, I'll try to help but I may need more info. Are you talking about the vacuum pump for the cruise control? I would think these would be the same or similar for any EA82 from '85 to '94. I have personal experience with them on cars from '85 to '88 and they are all the same but I'm guessing they didn't change throughout the model run. Post back if you need further/other info. -
I have a '90 Loyale Turbo with a aftermarket CC. I'm not sure who the maker is, it is set up much different than the Soob unit. Skip's list is accurate. I have seen some cars that had the CC wiring in place some not.

The Great BRAT go-kart numbers mystery
XSNRG replied to moosens's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Yeah, I remeber the promotion, a chicken in every pot and a Subaru Brat Go-Kart in every garage. -
There were two styles, the ones like Calebz has were on turbos and maybe as a dealer or owner add on. There was also a larger style that looks very similar to the rears. I have both styles if you need a set.

any windshield removal tips?
XSNRG replied to elcaminokurt's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I've had good luck with GD's technique. I carefully cut around the windshield to remove the rubber over the top of the glass. These windshields are not glued in so once the rubber is gone fron the top it will simply lift out. A utility knife with a new blade works great for this. You will want a new seal anyway. Good Luck. -
Tried my hand at Body Work, for the 1st time.
XSNRG replied to TheSubaruJunkie's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Nice work Brian, looks good. To bad the car you got the fender from didn't have a decent hood. -
Mine is a '90 Loyale and it does have a fuse holder with no fuse in it, I'm pretty sure it says FWD on it. If you have the wire color, that would be great, not sure if it's the same '89 to '90? I could use the colors for a '90 Loyale and a '89 XT-6. If it's not the brain then it's the DS? Or toast clutches? Either/or? If it's the DS C, maybe I can use the old one from the XT-6? Does towing them on two wheels destroy the transfer clutches? I did read the other thread and found it usefull. Have not done any additional serches yet. I will have the old trans from the XT-6, forward clutches and probably transfer clutches shot. If the trans is not worth re-building, I could turn you on to the DS A. thanks
-
Thanks for the very useful info. I checked and there is no fuse, doh. I looked generally at the wireing harness and connectors and everything looks OK. I will investigate further and post back.
-
I'm getting ready to put a new trans in my ebay XT-6. I pulled my '90 Loyale turbo up to the shop today and in the wet grass it will only spin one front wheel. Even after spinning for several seconds the rear would not kick in. Is the trans toast or could it be something repairable?

washington state ORV trail closures
XSNRG replied to Rooinater's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
The Capitol or Olympia State Forest Roads are open but the motorcycle trails are closed. You can always drive in on the main roads but serious off roading is probably limited. -
Is your XT 4wd? If it is, you could swap in a Full Time trans and eliminate the wheel spin.
