Going up to 11 inches lift and taking the T case plunge
XSNRG replied to subarubrat's topic in Off Road
Doesn't the new front (rear) diff run backwards? Solid axles would eliminate most breakage problems and you could get alot more articulation too. -
New stuff for our old stuff, nuts only!
XSNRG replied to WJM's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
The JY over here has a lot of Volvo's and they have a stock oil cooler that is roughly 6"X10" might be a good match for the adapter. -
I weighed four flywheels, I think the three non XT-6 are all off turbo cars but I'm not sure. I would be interested to know for sure if N/A and turbo flywheels are the same weight. 24 4.2 EA82 24 3.6 EA82 23 12.6 EA82 (machined) 21 13.8 ER27 Not as much difference as I was hoping for. Roughly 2.4 lbs...I may need to machine one for weight reduction. I'm going to use this on a Rally Cross/Club Rally car. Anybody with experience with lightend flywheels, please give me your opinion on ideal weight.

I generally inflate tires to the maximun pressure listed on the sidewall but as mentioned, only if the tire is in good condition. Interesting side note: I went hiking one day and when I got back to the car at dusk, I discovered I had a flat tire. I pulled the space saver outa the engine bay and it was flat too. I was 20 miles back in the woods and didn't have a coat, no food, nothing. I didn't want to ruin my good flat tire so I bolted on the spare and drove on it determined to get closer to the highway. Anyway, I ended up driving all the way out on it and then another 20 miles, ON THE FREEWAY! at 50MPH. I got home and the sidewalls were damn near worn through but it didn't even break the bead! Them suckas are tough! BTW-I reinflated it (not to 60PSI!) and it would hold air with a slow leak!

The difference in RX and XT6 clutches.
XSNRG replied to gravelRX's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
12 thou ain't much. I wonder what the wear tolerance is. When the PP contacts the clutch disc, is it fully extended? Or does it have additional travel as the disk wears? When the flywheel is turned, do they turn the PP mounting surface too? -
'88 GL10 Ignition Switch Removal
XSNRG replied to DPDISXR4Ti's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
If I remember correctly, those "rivets" are actually bolts with a head that breaks off when tightened for security reasons. I have gently taped them with a sharp chisel and they turn easily and can be removed with fingers, not even tight and with this method, they are reusable. -
Dyno Day, serious numbers, real proof, real pictures.

WJM How hard is it to mate the XT-6 TB to the spider? What is different about the Euro ECU and are they compatible with USDM cars? XSNRG -
RX Owners - Hows the Chassis On your Cars?
XSNRG replied to LegacyT's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
It's better than my GL-10 wagon. the RX seems to be much lighter. -
The deer antlers are a nice touch! but the sidepipes are awesome!

I have a '87 RX coupe which is the same body as yours. I have done a few things to the car to improve handling etc. The car is fun to drive and I'm excited to do more. As said in previous post, you can't go wrong with a rally car, you will have a lot of fun going to the local rallycross races or just tooling around. This car makes a pretty good platform for one, not a lot of after market stuff but there is some things available and some gheto stuff you can do. Is you car a turbo or fuel injected?

Any comments on Valvoline Oil Filters?
XSNRG replied to Ozsubie's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I used a hack saw to open up the filters, my biggest tubing cutter wasn't quite big enough. I cut carefully around the filter near the end that screws to the pump. Since then, I've cut open some used filters off different cars and I can tell you that is quite interesting too. -
Any comments on Valvoline Oil Filters?
XSNRG replied to Ozsubie's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Never use a Fram filter, they are made out of recycled toilet paper. If you want to find out how good a filter is cut it open and take a look. I cut a few open and they ALL looked OK except the POS Fram filter!!! -

I'd like to see the swap formula, I have a flat XT-6 too. -
If I read that right, your running different ratios in your front and rear diffs, if so, you may have destroyed your center differential. This would be silimlar to running a 13" tire on one side and 14" on the other, the differential would be working constantly. The same is true of the center diff when front and rear ratios are different. You could get away with this if it was a selective 4wd by never engaging the four wheel drive but with a Full Time trans it fatal. I hope I read that wrong but if I'm way off base, feelfree to flame away!
-
Sounds like the center diff, my RX and turbo wagon both do it with Full Time 4wd, so do the '87 Full Timer I sold Donny. I thought it was the rear diff in the RX and swapped it, made no difference. It's important those trans have matched tires or there is excessive wear on the center diff.

I have mostly complete cruise control and trip computer from a '88 Turbo Wagon. I may have some of the other bits too. I will mail you so we can work out the details.

To correct sliding, you would probably use 4 lo, since if you are trying to avoid sliding, you will probably be going slower. For deliberate sliding either will work but you might want 4 hi or a higher gear to get the tires spinning faster. 4 lo and 4 hi both lock up the same, so the only real difference will be at low speed or high speed. You can go slower in low range and faster in high range. I love driving my RX in low range and do it every chance I get.

Ask Qman about this, I had this discussion with him awhile back.
