I used an ECU and harness out of an automatic car for my bug.

Now HERE'S a transplant project for you NWP crazies!

I'd have to go for a type III or Ghia. -
any ideas about my hi-beam switch?
Nug replied to subyrally's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Ever get the wheel pulled off? It sounds like the switch is bad. If you rent or borrow a puller, keep it long enough to yank the wheel off of the donor car at the junkyard. -
Excellent. I hope it works out like you hoped it would.

oil change and oil pressure question
Nug replied to Bubonik's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
If it's ticking quite a bit, then the oil pump seals have failed. They deteriorate and allow air to get sucked in, or something. The result is lifters that won't pump up and bad oil pressure. Search for "oil pump seal" and you should find some results. BTW the guages aren't real accurate. -
Lincoln locker is cheaper initally, but will break more axles. LSD works well, and will break less stuff.

As soon as you said the engine was at an angle, I knew it was the carter's fault. To be real cheap about it, you could adjust the float level so more fuel enters the float bowl, but that risks having the needle never seating, and fuel running over into the intake with the engine off. You could maybe make a wedge-shaped adapter to sit on top of the intake to get the carb level again. BTW the weber 32/36 really has no problem with this.

Yeah, post pics. I'm interested.

I worked at a corporation that manufactured/tested motor oils. We built hundreds of test engines a year. We also had test standards we had to meet, like having measuring tools/torque wrenches calibrated. We had the rig to test the torque wrenches. One thing I learned. About the only way you can knock a snap-on torque wrench out of adjustment was to use it as a sledgehammer. You could fail to store it while set at the wrong number, use it to break nuts loose, go waaaay past when it first clicked at you. Very few had to get sent out. Another thing that seemed real interesting was it was accurate even when it was set to a number that was off of the scale. Like if it stopped at 30 lb/ft, but could physically turn down to what was theoretically 15 lb/ft, it would be accurate off of the scale, too. Just throwing that out there. I have a Snap-on torque wrench, and I get my buddy to check it occasionally, but it never has needed any work.

I know where there is one right now, but it's not rust free. The RX? Heh. I haven't driven it in 2 months because I'm too lazy to change a front axle. I've sort of been waiting for the TWE header and D/P to show up so i can knock it all out at once. Inspection dies at the end of this month, too.

Somewhere between the both of us messing with it, the fuel system problem disappeared. Robby got everything else working, so maybe by next week, it'll be on the road.

I'm getting 'HERESY' put on my license plates for this same reason. Both the subaru and VW people think it's heretic. If HERESY is taken, then it's getting AXSPWRS (axis powers).

The EJ will make that squareback a totally different machine. I've got an EJ22 in the back of a standard beetle. HAHAHA! It's crazy! Don't waste your time with the EA82. Too wide, not a whole lot of power, weird timing belt situation that makes it the least desireable soob motor to slap into the back of a vw (the kennedy adapters have no provision for timing marks on an EA82. Putting the timing belts on just became an olympic sport.) The EJ22 is gonna be challenging in the wiring dept. however. Hope you can follow a schematic.

Vanagon on Ebay for 99 cents, two more avail. incl. Westy...

You know, I like VW's and all, but I wouldn't touch that with a 40 foot pole. -
Are Facet/Purolater "clicker" pumps good or insufficient? The $210 brat has some fuel starvation isues. The primary fuel filter has been replaced, and the underhood one will be replaced tomorrow. All fuel/water was drained, a couple gallons of fresh fuel and a couple of bottles of isopropyl alcohol added (ISO HEET). I don't think water is an issue anymore. Basically, when you get both barrels of the Hitachi open, she screams for a sec and then starts surging, and then it'll try to die until you let up.

What type to use... A DSM buddy of mine used methanol that he got from work, or denatured alcohol, which he bought at Lowe's. He felt they both worked well.

God, I love a well-tuned sawzall. I sliced up the old exhaust system in a few seconds. It took me about an hour-and-a-half to whip up a conduit-N-Thrush glasspack exhaust system that didn't leak or vibrate. First time using flux-cored wire in my mig, too. It's hard getting a bottle filled on Sunday. Well, everything seems to be working, so maybe it'll be on the road soon. Guess what? I still didn't take pics. The digital camera did find its way to the floor of my truck, though. One step closer.

My buddy Robby and I went and got the brat today. Robby is the new owner, i owed him some money, and the transmission in his ranger grenaded. Convienent. The drunkard still hadn't cleaned it out. We offered to do it for him, but he put on some shoes and "helped". Soon thereafter, he learned that we planned on driving it out of there. He kept telling us, "But the fuel pump is bad. It won't run". I swapped the new fuel pump he bought and put it on there and...no power going to it. Whatever. Wire run off of the battery turned it on, though. And it started. And the poor guy was dumbfounded. And then he didn't wanna let it go. After waving $210 cash (It was all we had), he relented and signed the title. Robby drove my Tacoma, and I drove the tainted car. It ran good, except for that water-in-the-fuel sort of surging and stuff. 20 miles later and it was on the lift at my father's shop, gas drained out, interior vacuumed and Febreezed, fuel filters blown out, fuel pump rewired. Tomorrow involves creating a 2" exhaust system out of a 10' piece of galvanized conduit tubing (remember, we're broke now, and trying to get a car to pass inspection), and coming up with a permanent solution for the fuel pump wiring problem. So to cap it off, $210 Brat 198k 4spd D/R (w00t) Working hill holder (Robby had never seen such a thing) Very little rust good times Maybe I'll get pics before next year.

When using a "plate" or "Fogger" system, can you run alcohol through the fuel jets instead of gasoline? I think the cooling/octane advantage of alcohol would make it superior for this, but I've never heard of anyone using it.

I need my TWE parts, and a new axle. Then I'll be good to go.
