  1. you're probably going to want your battery back then, arent ya?
  2. Yeah this was brought up a couple of years ago on the old board. They wanted to introduce the forester in the India market and there were no Subaru dealers there so the rebadged them as Chevs. And CM owns 15% of fuji heavy industries wich is the parent company of Subaru.
  3. The simplest thing to do would to be swap your blown longblock with a good EA82 turbo longblock (IE the engine minus the intake, sensors and distributor) just reuse your existing intake, sensors and distributor if they are working correctly. Any EA82 Turbo longblock will work, well as long as it's in good condition. Oh by the way a stock XT turbo never got up in the 13X hp range. The later XTs with what's refered to as the spider intake did produce more power then the rest of the EA82 Turbo engines but the difference is less then 5 hp if I remember right. The spider intakes flow air a little better. If you want to you can use that intake and sensors when you do the swap. I've heard that it's not that hard to make it work with you existing EXU
  4. My bet is they are bidding the job that high because they don't want to do it.
  5. Just a reminder, this year's rules meeting in on the 8th. http://p066.ezboard.com/foregonregionsccafrm16.showMessage?topicID=58.topic
  6. The engine and tranny are sitting in there now. The axle need to come off the tranny to do this. Since the axle need repaired, I ended up giving Mike a crash corse on how to take out an axle. Talk about rust being used to hold thing together. We actually need to put in some effort to get it out.
  7. What you are looking to do maybe possible, but let's get some of the basics right first. The pinion gear and pinion shaft are machined out of one peice of steel and the other gears and 1st/2nd syncro are pressed on to that shaft. On the other end on the shaft there a splines that mate with the center diff. Now you can't just go and take the front diff and pinion set out of the out case and place it into another. You will need to re-shim the shaft do get the proper ring and pinion alignment. One more thing, you don't want to take the gear set on the pinion shaft and mate it with the input shaft gear set from another tranny. You'll get some gear noise if you do. What I would do is to swap the gears from one input shaft to the other. While you're at it you may want to find a D/R 5-speed and get the Hi/Lo set off of it and swap it with the set from you R/R fulltime 4WD, since the RX didn't get as low of a low range as the rest.
  8. Someone set a date and let me know. I would prefer a sunday though. That way I can bring a buddy of mine who works saturdays and dosen't have internet at home.
  9. Since you're tearing it down that far, it's not going to be much more work to pull the pistons from the block, inspect them for scuffing and throw on a new set of rings. Don't forget to wiggle the connecting rods to see if there's exsesive play.
  10. Instead of carving the plug, take a flat screwdriver and heat the tip for a few minutes with a propane torch. Then press it into the plug and let it cool, it should turn pretty easily. Oh you don't need to get the screwdriver glowing, just a couple of minutes under the torch should be enough.
  11. Since you live in that part of the world, you might want to see how much whiteline's rear swaybar kit will cost. http://www.whiteline.com.au
  12. You need to understand that I belive that after market rebuilt heads for subarus are crap. I've seen too many that fail way too soon. Also one thing to keep in mind is that if you use a 1st or 2nd gen head, you'll probably have to replace it withing a couple of years because they'll crack in the exhause port.
  13. if they are 3rd gen heads and who ever build them knows what they are doing, then that's not a bad price. if they are 2nd gen heads, they are asking about $150 too much and if they are 1st gen heads... well they should be paying you to take them off out their hands.
  14. A friend of mine works on Subarus for a living and he can usually change a set of plugs in a Phase-I EJ25 in 1/2hour. Then again he has the right tools and he attacks them from under the car.
  15. I was thinking sometime between noon and 2p.m. Austin PM me when you get home tomarrow night and I'll call
  16. The spline count on the DOJ wouldn't be a problem as long as you do not use Turbo 5-speed axle. But there are a few other things you may run into. EA82 axles are longer, you might have to change the inner wheel bearing seal, you may have to use an EA82 hub.
  17. If I can finalize a meeting time with Austin, I'm going up to pick up a transmission. Anyone else want me to stop by?
  18. When I was working at a Subie shop, we decited to blow an engine in a 87 wagon we were parting out. We let it run with the tack pegged and about 10 minuted the cat started melting down and it got to a point where there was too much backpressure to keep the engine running.
  19. The Boss man wants me to work Saturday so it looks like I'm out. I can't pass on the money since we don't get paid holidays anymore.
  20. They sell an Outback XT now in the US. As for my choice, I would choose the XT because you can not get an H6 in the US with a manual gearbox.
  21. Hmm interesting, I spent a few years in Klamath Falls while attending Oregon Tech. This time of year with the cold weather and higher elevation, you shouldn't be having this problem, heck I managed to run my 84 GL at about 12degs BTC at idle without any problems. When you checked out the EGR valve, did you check the tube that runs from the right cylinder head to the intake manifold for a blockage? Also there is a thermo vacuum switch that prevents the EGR vlave from opening when the engine is still cool, have you checked it yet. You mentioned that you've had this problem for about 5 weeks, isn't that about the same time they start adding the anti-smog additive to the fuel down there? Maybe that's causeing you some problems. Also what octane level are you using? Maybe you just need to step up a grade.
  22. My 1st subaru was an 80 1600 4wd STDhatchback. It was the ugly brown color along with a little rust. When i bought it, it had a set of the American Racing wheels on it similar to these http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/80s/wheels2/AmericanRacing-chrome-12hole-2.jpg but painted white. I still have those wheels but one is a little tweeked.
  23. The filter is external of the transmission and is inline with one of the fluid lines that run to the radiator. The filter sits on the passenger side of the transmission and it looks like a Legacy fuel filter. The reason this filter was added, was becasue transmission cooler located in one of the radiator tanks would get clogged up and cut off the supply of fluid back to the transmission. I'm not sure if 93/94 models need the filter because Subaru may have fixed the problem with the radiator before those model years.
