Subaru 360 van Dyno day
ShawnW replied to 2stroketurbo's topic in Historic Subaru Forum: 50's thru 70's
Thanks for sharing I learned a lot. Not sarcasm. Love the walk around video with your daughter being able to circle them most of the time staying on pavement on a 1 lane driveway without scratching the sides. As a kid my parents wouldnt let me ride between the cars for fear of scratching the sides with the handlebars. Probably because they were Fords at the time and ate the whole driveway. -
Stickied thread to get some more interest and support the organizers. Ill host it here in Denver if need be to keep the shows going but even I would prefer to drive out to see the PNW crowd again.

Ive got a Hobart handler 135 and I love it. Works well and transports easy. I loan it to friends quite often. If you lived 2 hours away like the good ol days I would drop it off.

Did you miss the 30 K service? At 30K we do: All FLUIDS except Brake and that wouldnt be a bad idea too. Rotate and balance tires Air filter Fuel filter (dont think yours has one anymore) plugs Adjust belts if necessary Lube hinges Fuel treatment (We use BG 44K) Battery service. Load Test, charge, and clean terminals and add battery pads. You should consult your owners manual and do everything it says to do that you haven't already done in the maintenance schedule. If they did a flush they were supposed to use the SUPER type ATF and if they didn't you need to complain.

Just picked up an '85 Brat

That looks like the one that "The Yeti" bought from a lady out in Byers a couple years ago. Same color and same topper. If it is it has some rust on the shock towers but overall is in pretty ok shape. I might be interested in buying the topper if you want to get rid of it. -
Ive bought from these guys and they are great.

And you lose HP. Might as well just put a carb engine in while you are at it. Sell the spare motor if you already have it and start the 2.2 conversion.

It would be a good swap and bolts in exactly the same. Do it. The mileage could be better slightly of course would be a pro. Con lower power but not much.

California SMOG : from Sconnie to Cali
ShawnW replied to clinternet's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
It actually is a crime to drive around long term with out of state plates so you could say they are doing their job by patroling for that. Why not reinstall the o2 sensor and put a legal exhaust on it? I believe in taking care of my cars, and I actually like knowing that they pass emissions. I find they run better and I take care of them more when I am required to pass. My cars get better mileage this way as well. Check the law books but you may be entitled to not have california plates if you are temporary resident and some do live there for college or other reasons that may actually legally allow you to maintain Wisconsin residence and drive there completely legally. Just check and if this is the case you dont have to get a Cali drivers license either most likely. Otherwise look for a smog friendly loyale in California to buy and bring it back to Wisconsin when you are done living there. The car will likely be completely rust free and you can use the one you got in Milwaukee for parts. -
Blame the people that banned the use of asbestos in head gaskets. Its no conicidence that the failures started popping up with the 2.5L engine and the head gasket material change also happened at the same time. I understand the damage asbestos can do but a head gasket is not being breathed in like insulation in your home.

There are fixes for it but a lot of the time the driver is what needs repaired. By this I mean.... Stop closing the door by pushing the glass. The gusset as it is called, can be replaced for around $100 in parts or you can take a rag and with the door open compress the rubber with a very large pair of channel locks. Do so gently but evenly. It will tighten the gap for a while. This may be what the dealer did at 11K. I never heard of the shim but that was before I was a tech. -
Too long isnt a problem. Thread a die onto the bolt, cut the end off with a rotary or a hacksaw and then run the die back down to the end to clean it up. If its shouldered you might not be able to do this if the shoulder is too thick.
