  1. Could be oil leaks hitting your exhaust pipe.

  3. Just thought I'd throw in an experience I just had this week with my ford f250. I have been having a problem with backing it up, especially with a load in it. I took it to my mechanic who had put a clutch into it a couple of years ago. When I would back up it would jump, chatter, and act bound up. They looked at the clutch, and drive line system. Said it was all sound. They asked me to try something the 4 wheel guys suggested. I didn't know I had a posi traction rear end until then. May sound lame but how do you know? (the dif. had a tag on it, but only with code #'s) They recommended draining out the 90 wgt, replacing it with fresh, and putting in an additive designed for posi rear ends. I just did this and it seems to have done the trick. I haven't had a load in it, but empty it seems to be much improved. Thanks for the links, good info. Dave.
  4. I bought an import motor from Raising Sun severel years ago. I bought the engine, clutch, and shipping...came to 500. It is an hydraulic lifter, and has run great. I hired a mechanic to install and he put in a weber that came with the brat. It is a '78 brat. I just gave them the info they asked for. I'd do it again. Dave.
  5. I have the same problem with the shifter boot,it works it's way loose. I thought it was because the brat is lifted. Anyone have a way to fix that?

  9. There is another shop in central Az.. Cottonwood is near Sedona, ask where old town is. There is an Exon station on the edge of old town, they have about 7 or 8 subs parked in the back. I haven't dealt with them, but i hear they are into subs. Good luck, dp.

  12. (a little off thread, but...) I have two axles on my '78,not long enough to even put the flat washer on after the cone washer. I haven't done anything about it yet as the '78 is off the road as of now. I figure the ends were buggered up, they trimmed the ends and chased the threads.
  13. How did you overcome the difference in brackets? Is the ea81 axle the shorter of the two? I have two remans from Checker that are barely long enough to use.

  15. You should also check to see if you have the correct rim on the vehicle for that year. The rim could be dragging on the caliper. If you jack up the car,see if the wheel will spin. If not loosen up the lug nuts, and check again. If it does, that is the culprit.
  16. My '78 brat has the quad lights, and has a tach. It looks to be original. BUT it has never worked. At one time I tryed hooking it up, but it wanted to kill the engine. I just figured I didn't know what I was doing and forgot about it.
  17. Hi, nice to see more subys in Az. I live in Prescott. I have both gen 1 and 2 brats. What kind of shape is the shell in? I am doing a job down in Tuscon right now. Out Tanque Verde way. I drive down and usually work for 7 to 9 days then go home. I have been driving my '87 brat, it does pretty well (especially since the gas prices have gone up). '78 and '87 Brat, Dave.
  18. Hello all, I've been out of the loop for a while, but wanted to put my two cents in this thread. I have always had a gen one (wagon and brat) Right now my daily driver is an '87 brat.   19. I just found an '88 rx at the junk yard, has decent seats, I'd like to put them in my '87 brat. Has anyone done this? (without major work). They want 75.00. thanks, dp.

  21. My '87 brat has an issue similiar to yours. It doesn't pop the hood far enough to get to the latch inside. So when I pull on the release cable, I reach over to the drivers side corner of the hood and give it a pop with my fist. That is enough for it to clear the release.

  23. Guess it depends on conditions. I stripped out a 81 wagon in the back forty by myself. Used a sheet of plywood for the cheery picker to sit/roll on. I thought it pulled out slicker than *%^&*%. I also greatly value my back. I am a 51 yr. young carpenter. I've gone through back issues and have learned to think through issues rather than muscle them. But like Miles said, get the front end up. Ramp the front tires, jack a little more and block the car. Then you can remove the ramps, to give more room, and free the wheels.It also gives you enough room to work underneath.
