  1. Intake gaskets are pretty new. It only has water leak into the cylinders on occasion... so I think sometimes when the metal is expanded right its sealed up tight. but when it shrinks one of the water passages dumps water into the cylinder. There is no crap in the overflow tank... then again I have to refill the overflow tank every day! The oil is pure too though... so there is no mix of any of them. Dont worry it will be torn down soon... I just need to pick up my rebuild items from Richie and put my 88 back together, get it started and then drive that while I rebuild the 87.
  2. Time for a turbo... A turbo on an EJ22 should smoke that car no problem
  3. This morning my 87 GL would just not start... it would crank and crank and kinda sputter a bit when I pumped the gas pedal. Last night... The car essentially hydrolocked itsself I think. The engine wouldnt turn (I was able to move it enough to open the valves to let the crap out) and then it started up, but the head gasket was leaking BAD... there was a nice big steam cloud behind me the mile drive home. This morning like I said the car wouldnt start, but it cranked just fine. I eventually got it to start by cranking it for like 30 seconds while pumping the gas repeatedly... again it had a steam cloud, but smaller than before. I'm just trying to figure out why it wouldnt fire up this morning... lack of compression from the toasted head gasket?? Water in the system?? I'm thankful I got it started and Shannon to work safely... but one of these days I fear it wont start and I will have to resort to the Impreza without plates or the brat with tags that expire pretty soon.
  4. I have like 3 webers coming in from SVXpert soon... I'll sell you one cheap
  5. I REALLY need to install new brakes... my front pads are toast and I have 2 sets of rear discs waiting to go on (one for the brat one for my car) My brake fluid light has come on for the SECOND time in a year (only on big bumps) so I know the lines are leaking... OR my brakes are SO wasted they need more fluid... I drove my friends mazda a day or 2 ago... WAY touchy compared to my 87... I have to mash my pedal, I just barely had to touch theirs... hmmm maybe time for a brake overhaul...
  6. Grrr now I feel bad for paying $500 for my rusty brat... Though it DOES run awesome (65K on the engine)
  7. Hmmm when my carb went to crap I got about 14 MPG.... is the carb wearing out you think??
  8. change the oil... toss in some MMO maybe that will help to cure the tapping. Personally I just throw 20W50 in there and a new oil pump gasket (though I dont think you want to tear in there to do the gasket)
  9. Wow... I could carbon copy this to my own story... I too have an 87 GL which was hit in the front left and now the horns are lacking. There are 2 ways to get to the horns. Remove the headlight housings and reach down, or remove the bumper and reach in. The bumper method is the one I would suggest, then you dont have to mess up your headlight aim.
  10. Get a new used engine from japan Subaru engines are cheap enough from overseas to not worry about rebuilding them. Rebuilds are for american engines is my school of thought because we have no cheap place to get low mileage used engines from.
  11. That dent will buff right out Wow that car is nice looking for free! Why cant I ever get free projects?
  12. In the day I shall taste. Only when I know I wont be driving anymore for the day will I fill the mug all the way (7-8 PM ish) I may have the USMB drunk title, but im not gonna do stupid stuff like drive.
  13. XT or XT6 seats are the sporty way to go. You sit lower in the car by an inch or 2 so headroom is improved. You can fit GL-10 seats from an 85-89 Gl-10 Seats from an 85+ RX are nice too. If you want comfort get the GL-10 seats. If you want pure sport get RX or XT/XT6 seats If you want style get the red/black "pimp" style seats. They are VERY elusive though.
  14. Andrew, if I remember my hitachi right it had the anti dieseling silinoid, the choke and a ground. Maybe the last wire is a ground??
  15. I'd be up for that. Think you can still get away with sneaking out of the house Jason?
  16. Sweet, that means I can toss one on the 88 project and save afew bucks
  17. I'm willing to help test the fluid capacity of the mugs if you need someone They look to be about a pint from that picture... a good size.
  18. Remember the $400 car I got from Jason (the red battlewagon)? It did the SAME thing... I dont remember if we got the light to go away or not, but the new owner took it to richies dad and he fixed everything. Maybe give richie a ring and see if he remembers what was wrong with it.
  19. Paraults are usually the ticket.... meaning they are the reason the pump craps out? Or they are usually the way to go? :-\ I am thinking of going with a lower cost pump from Richie (I can buy one off him for cheaper than a $60 subaru one).... but if it happens to be a parault pump and they do indeed suck... hmmm maybe its worth the $$ for a subaru one.
  20. hmmm those chromies that arent calmasters look rather similar to the white wheels that les schwab used to sell as wagon wheel replacements... never seen them in chrome though. I know general disorder has a set in white, and I used to, but I gave mine away with my 86 turbowagon. The chrome versions must be kinda rare just as white calmasters are rather rare.
  21. for the part of the network that ends up on I-5... wouldnt it be great for us all to meet in Gresham (east side of portland) with the northern group then ALL caravan as a multi-state suby caravan down I-84 to Hood River??
  22. I belive wheel bearing jobs can range from $150 or so to 300 Head gasket jobs on the 2.5 liters can go from 1200 to 1500 on average.
  23. I got 31 MPG in my 98 impreza L with a 2.2 and a 4EAT up in the mountains going between portland oregon and reno NV. That included many runs up to 95 MPH to pass RV's on the hills up at 4000 feet.
  24. Thats why I didnt charge him (cause I wasnt sure if they were shot or not)
