  1. I finished welding the "strap steel" along the bottom edge of my diff hanger. I'm thinking this will be stronger for the added strain of a welded diff... Oh ya I also added a Mega skid plate up front. It's an eighth inch (1/8...oops) steel plate covering everything in site. It's attached at the front frame and the rear at the cross member. Glenn 82 SubaruHummer--armor plated.... 01 Forester--Jealous
  2. I've only seen it done with brats...wouldn't make much sence, bobbing a hatch (although many have taken the tops off ) As for the front end there is not much to take off lengthwise because of the lights and radiator. I believe Zapar just removed some metal under the bumper of his hatch. You should be able to find the thread. SawZalls and Subarus are not strangers! Saw on Dude Glenn 82 SubauHummer 01 Forester
  3. Shawn W. has a block heater on his Brat, you could ask him... My Sub has always started well in real cold weather??? I usually get heat in a few minutes even in the coldest of times  Good luck, Glenn 82 SubaruHummer with heater! 01 Forester also with heater!
  4. I don't even think Subaru considers the plastic belly pan to be a skid plate. It was never designed to take any impact like a skid plate. Until you add a dual range tranny, I don't think you'll need a real skid plate. In my opinion the Forester isn't an SUV. It's a great all wheel drive wagon though! My .02 Glenn 82 SubaruHummer---off-road ready 01 Forester---Dirt-road ready
  5. My wife was the one who sent the money to AZ for the plans to build "Summer" ....(do you think she did it so she wouldn't have to drive it anymore?).... She enjoys our SubaruHummer and calls it a 4 seat ATV. It's nice to have someone who supports me with these whacky projects She's a keeper Sko! Keep Building! (your relationship)
  6. If I remember right it takes about 3 quarts? of fluid... Mine ran fine on 1 quart for many years...as I never filled it in 20+ years Good luck, Glenn 82 SubaruHummer 01 Forester
  7. I like where they placed them in the forester.... Right in front of the vents!!! In the summer it cools your coffee and then in the winter it warms your soda! Who thought this up? It also blocks a fair amount of air when you use them... Just whining!
  8. On the 01 Forester I have the "out. Temp." display on the dash that tells the outside temp. Question; Is there a way to display the "inside temp" off the same unit? Or is is strictly going to just display the outside temps? Alright it's a stupid question, I know... But I have a stupid reason. I want to get the center dash gauge pack that already has an outside temp display and I was wondering if I could switch the dash one to not duplicate the displays. Glenn, 82 SubaruHummer---outside temp is always the same as inside temp! 01 Forester---wants dual temp displays!
  9. When looking for a Subie....it's important to....... Never let them know your afraid! I'll be quiet now Glenn 82 SubaruHummer 01 Forester
  10. Find a 3.7 LSD and put your existing 3.9 gears in the LSD and you'll have it. I think there are numerous write-ups on the how to details. Good luck Glenn 82 SubaruHummer---Welded diff 01 Forester---LSD
  11. Don't make us Jealous.....talking about High and Low ratios. :slobber: We can't get them up here! We only have the single range transmissions Glenn 82 SubaruHummer-dual range transmission 01 Forester-single range transmission
  12. I have a similar problem, I have traced it to one of my fans. I can get one to come on from heat/air conditioning. The other fan will not come on! I have jumped power to it and it will work but the sensors aparently will not turn it on. I checked my relays by swapping them around and was able to eliminate them as a problem? I ran a thread on this a while ago I think it was "Forester cooling issues"? The board was most helpful. Good luck Glenn 82 SubaruHummer 01 Forester
  13. I second the motion! Replace as necessary...
  14. It's funny all the sudden there is mouse posts everywhere. It kinda makes sence now you think about it. It's the time of year the cridders are looking to find shelter. Can't really blame them for trying Get a bucket half full of water attach a ruler on a piece of coat hanger wire to form a diving board/teter totter. Make it so the ruler can pivot freely but rests/resets to a horizontal position. Place smear of peanut butter on the end of the ruler in the center of the bucket. You now have a resetting mouse trap with the optional drowning attachment. Don't forget to add stairs to the end of the ruler for easy access and your on your way! Note: In winter use Antifreeze or they just jump back out off the ice. I have used one of these for 15 years and only baited it when I first made it! Mice line up to go swimming! Everytime I check it I have a bucket of Mice Smells great in the summer time.... Disclaimer: If they wouldn't eat the rubber hoses on the Quads or snomobiles or carpet in the Trooper, I wouldn't do this in my garage. But they do!
  15. I was fooling around at lunch today and got the Forester Weighed. I was kind of supprised how much it weighed As it stood with no real equipment or people inside it was #3170 pounds! For your Ref. Glenn 82 SubaruHummer #2030 01 Forester #3170
  16. Mudrat, I'll give you a call before I leave "work", it's cheaper that way I'm going to go to the cabin this weekend so I may not be around much, cell only works a little up there? I was talking about reinforcing "Summer". I figure I need to do something to the diff bar before I put the other rear axle in for good! Took it out the other day with 3WD and it was a scream! Build Yours!:-p Glenn 82 SubaruHummer 01 Forester
  17. I'm not sure what it does? I know it controls the fuel pump power and the choke on the carb. It's a black box 1982 (Light blue on later years 1984?) that mounts to the side wall of the car near the hood release. I think it has a six prong wire connector. I tested mine using a volt meter and the wires that run to the fuel pump. No Volts! I think it uses a signal from the coil to know how often to pump but I'm not sure if it's dependent on the ignition system or if it is able to kill the ignition system? Someone here will know... I'm still concerned about the spark thing... Good Luck Glenn 82 SubaruHummer 01 Forester
  18. I need to beef up my diff hanger. Here is what I had in mind.... I was thinking on welding a 1.5" by an eighth flat bar along the bottom, following the contour of the existing diff hanger. A cross section of the bar would look like an upside down "T". I figured this would give me the strength of angle iron times two and the strength of curved steel together? Looking for feedback before I do it. Any thoughts? Ideas? insults? Glenn 82 SubaruHummer---welded diff + beefy tires = weak diff hanger! 01 Forester
  19. I had a similar problem when I was building "Summer". Everything went back together just fine and it fired up great. Shortly thereafter it wouldn't start? I traced the problem to the fuel pump. After replacing the pump, I found it still wouldn't start. I then traced the problem to no power at the pump. This was because the "Black Box" (Fuel Pump Control Unit) went bad...for no apparent reason...It quit sending power to the pump. You might want to check this out on yours? For what it's worth... Glenn 82 SubaruHummer---Summer 01 Forester
  20. If it's eating Acorns, I think it's bigger than a mouse! I'd suggest a rat or a squirrel has taken up residence? A big mouse trap would catch the varmit but if it's a Squirrel, I'd hate to hurt it? Can you relocate the car? What about wiping the area clean with gas? That's got to stink and varmits have sensitive noses. Good Luck, Glenn I have the same problem with my Trooper (Mice) I relocated the vehicle and put traps inside where the mice are congregating
  21. Kelly blue book generally gives you a higher retail price than NADA.com. Good Luck Glenn
  22. That hurts just to look at! Can you get the money for the totaled vehicle and keep it? Or do they give you the money and keep the car if they total it? It would make an interesting platform to start building with and you wouldn't have to worry about body damage Keep us updated on what your going to do! Glenn 82 SubaruHummer 01 Forester
  23. Lookin Good! The XT makes an unusual looking platform for off-roading. Looks like it could go anywhere you point it! Glenn 82 SubaruHummer 01 Forester
  24. Doctor,.....That's one of the longest posts I've ever seen Thinking, Thinking, Thinking (Forester Gauge pack with Gauges?) Humm..... Glenn 82 SubaruHummer 01 Forester
  25. I think this is the perfect excuse to make a "Mad Max" bumper and start your building adventure. After all it's not your fault the bumper got torn off. You just put a nice big off-road one in it's place for safety! Built it! Glenn 82 SubaruHummer 01 Forester
