'80 Brat restoration update (pics added)
Sweet82 replied to hops's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Nice work! I wish the pictures were closer to show more detail. Looks great! Your well on the way. I used a spray on "rhino" type lining on the buggy. I'd recommend it! Keep up the good work. Glenn 82 SubaruHummer 01 Forester -
Adjustable suspension Q's
Sweet82 replied to Mykeys Toy's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I put penetrating oil on my struts a day before I tried to adjusts them down. I also moved the wrench back and forth many times before I re-set my wrench again. You don't want to mess up those threads! Good luck, Glenn 82 SubaruHummer 01 Forester -
There will be a black box if you have keyless or not. If you don't have keyless, your box will be a timed door lock. The dealer will be able to tell you by VIN if your car had the option of keyless or not? I have an 01 Forester which was suppose to have keyless as a standard feature. Cars can be ordered without these standard features! My car was. I had to chase down the part and install it before my remote would work. Get the part number of the keyless from the dealer and match it up to your box and see if it is a keyless box or not? Good luck Glenn 82 SubaruHummer, what's a remote? 01 Forester, ebay remotes and keyless box!

4-link setup, how does it work?
Sweet82 replied to Caboobaroo's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Russ, That Brat is going to Scream! The Pirate board is not the most freindly place around. What about good old fashion leaf springs for the rear? All the old muscle cars are making them work? Good luck with your project. -
Ahhhh time to learn to weld!
Sweet82 replied to Flowmastered87GL's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I was looking for a welder to build the buggy with, I talked with the folks at Harbor Freight about their Chicago Electric welders and the guy there told me they got about 25% back. That end that idea real quick! I ended up getting the Lincoln at Home Depot for $325--great welder. You can add the gas attachment for $100. I have never done it yet. Flux core wire works fine for me so far. Good luck Glenn 82 SubaruHummer 01 Forester -
Are you looking for a push bar or brush guard? I might be able to help with the push bar? Glenn 82 SubaruHummer 01 Forester

Shaun, The A 1 Auto Pull is a good place to find Subies. It's down 21st at 6778 W. They have a good selection there of 84 and newer. If you find any other good stashes let me know! I want to by a cheap whole car for parts. Good luck, Glenn 82 SubaruHummer 01 Forester -
I did it! Pics to prove it!

Tires explained The tires are 26X12X12 the stock tire is around 22" so the tires are over sized. With the 26, I can feel the difference in the gearing. Morgan is correct, gearing IS the reason I didn't go bigger. The ability to do a sustained climb with no run is important to me/my terrain. The buggy is a little different than the classic Subaru. Overhang is not a factor so I don't need to lift it like a Sub Chassis. I still have a foot of clearance down the center and my suspension is adjusted all the way down (yes down). The angles of approach are 45 and 71 degrees. What really happened here is rather than lifting the chassis, I just built the chassis higher to begin with. The floor/main frame is about two feet off the ground. Ya after most everyone on the board telling me to get it dirty, I did. It was Fun! My wife describes it as a four person ATV. That seems fairly close. (I hate to admit this but I spent a little over an hour cleaning it afterwards) SubaSkeet, I'll post the specks later, here is what I remember, it's 73" wide, I took 15" out of the driveline and I believe it weighs about #500 less than the hatch. Will, it's kind of a "one of a kind" but it's also a kit! This was based off the RhinoBuggy Bandit kit. Which was copied from the Scorpion tactical vehicle. As far as I know it's the only one in the US. (Build one!) Oobnucker, I made a timelapse documentation on the build process. http://usmb.net/gallery/albuo21 Happy to share the doo'z and dont'z with anyone interested. Rooinator, it's Moab ready! I'll be down there in a month or so doing a little recon for spring??? Couldn't have done it with out the board! Glenn 82 SubaruHummer, now a seasoned pro! (well it's been out once) 01 Forester, still a little jealous.... -
I just got an '85 Hatch 4WD 4-spd d/r!
Sweet82 replied to TimHansen's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Tell us of your Evil plans for this poor little Subie:brow: I'm thinking Monster Garage....? -
Isn't it easier to just go to the junkyard and swap it out rather than spending the time to try to fix it? Even better, you can probably find a whole parts car for the same price as JY tranny? Replace it...Don't fix it... (And if you do fix it, figure out how to gear it LOWER!) Glenn 82 SubaruHummer 01 Forester

Frankensteining my 1994 Justy?
Sweet82 replied to thegnu's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Someone up in the northwest is off-roading one of those with ATV tires! Sounds like a riot to me! Take enough weight off and it's the same as a gear reduction? Get the Jumper cables out and hook them up to FrankenJusty! Do it!...and take pictures. Glenn 82 SubaruHummer 01 Forester -
Got my 2nd free GL 10 Turbo wagon in two days!

keyless remote
Sweet82 replied to Anwart's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVX
You can give the dealer the vin and they can tell you if you have the keyless option. That was how I found out I needed to install one! Good luck, Glenn 82 SubaruHummer who needs keys? 01 Forester, Ebay keyless and remotes. -
After much flack from the board, I finally took the SubaruHummer out on it's maden voyage! Summer did well, not a single problem reared it's ugly head! Somethings that did become apparent are; (in no particular order) It's windy without a windshield! Cranking the wheel and hitting the gas can fill up the buggy with gravel! It climbs weird with only one rear axle in! Feels incredible stable on side slopes. It turns on a dime! Seems like you can pivot on the inside rear wheel. Actually it takes about 6 feet for the inside rear wheel to make a circle! The fan turns on alot if you never leave second gear! http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/photos/showgallery.php?cat=500&ppuser=584 It was great to have my old Subaru "Outback" where it belongs! Glenn, 82 SubaruHummer---finally out of the garage! 01 Forester---can now get back in the garage!

Sweet82 replied to Numbchux's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I think this would be a good mod! http://www.rhinobuggies.com.au/prod05.htm May be too intense for what you had in mind? Just a thought.... Glenn 82 SubaruHummer 01 Forester -
Old Subarus never retire they just spread there parts around:D Your 78 will live on! Good luck on the transfer! Glenn, 82 Subaru--parts are now on both coasts!--and the SubaruHummer lives on! 01 Forester

Sweet82 replied to NorthWet's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I haven't done it.....but I'm not above it! I sawed the front of my car off to pull the engine:brow: (20 minutes flat!) including tires, struts, tranny! SAW IT! Glenn 82 SubaruHummer---with easyoutengine! 01 Forester---don't even think about it! :-p -
See, we DO have rust in Washington!
Sweet82 replied to carfreak85's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Rust? That's not rust... That's probably just a victim of some minor Atomic testing. (the only way to tell is look at it at night and see if it glows) I could pull a "Flintstone" to stop my old Subaru! Rust? You never lived in SALT LAKE CITY! Glenn 82 SubaruHummer---now rust free:D 01 Forester---traces of rust already:mad: -
Is the limited slip that much better than the open diff for off-roading? Just wondering... Glenn 82 SubaruHummer---welded! 01 Forester---ya right!
