  1. Oregon aint the tropics, at least not yet anyway. If you live someplace where you need to worry about emissions or your worried about gas mileage , you need a T stat. nippper
  2. Your car is old enough to be due for a radiator. Remove the radiator and inspect it. If you have AC you realy cant see the condition of the cooling fins. Replace the radiator cap. Take a hose and wet the belts, see if the whistling goes away. nipper
  3. Yes it is. Also shops DO miss idlers sometimes and tensioners. That can throw off the ignition timing. nipper
  4. isnt 168 an odd number to replace a timing belt? You may want to insepct everything under the covers. nipper
  5. link? and if it was under 200 bucks i wojuld doubt it is a real chip . If it doesnt go inside the ecu its not a chip. nipper
  6. Blueing is bad on internal tranny parts. It means the part saw high heat and is no longer any good. The parts list was listed John, so replace all those parts. nipper
  7. i thought there was a tariff if you bought in a car from outside CA. Look at the CA dmv web site. nipper
  8. no. Replace the solenoid. This is a duty solenoid. It rapidly opens and closes, it is not an on - off solenoid. The solenoid may fail under heat, or have a slow response time. You can not check that on a bench in your garage. You can test the coil resistance. You have gone this far, you really need to replace the wear parts. This is like rebuilding an engine and replacing only one main bearing. Do a partial rebuild, and i will promise you you will be back in that transmission doing it all again. nipper PS Why are you doing this anyway? Leave the duty switch on again ?
  9. loose/ worn fan belt is more likely. When the alt fails the brake light is fairly bright. Also check the battery terminals, clean them, and clean the alt terminals. nipper
  10. i second that. On the torque bind, do all your tires match? They have too otherwise any repair you do is doomed.
  11. The blinking is to catch your attention, dont ignore it or second guess it, as it can result in a expensive repair. It is NOT automatically a duty C problem, as it can be as simple as a bad temp sensor in the trany. There are 6-7 solenoids in the tranny, so it can be any one of those. How does the car behave on low speed tight turns. Ther tranny shop your dealing with isnt very good. There is a way to read the codes yourself without a computer. nipper
  12. hrmmmm well there are no wires. So its either the injectors or the plugs or coils. There is the possability that the o2 sensor is tired and making the car run rich.
  13. Which car is this? i though only the newer ones had one coil per cylinder on top of the plugs. The other one has a two coil pack. One coil for two plugs using a waste spark system. nipper
  14. never ever just top off the ac, it can be deadly. This is the newer refridgerant, which is not as cool as good old freon at idle. If it blows cold at speed and the compressor is not short cycling, you should be fine. nipper
  15. hrmmmm This sounds like an intermittent electrical issue. Do you have a scanner that can freeze data in real time? What i would try is dissconnets and re connect the conectors for the injectors, temp sensor, cam and crank sensors. This will clean the terminals. i am suspicous of the cam or crank sensors. Usually this is a sympton of one of them going bad. Make sure they are clean at the business end. INspect the knock sensor. The knock sesnor wil normally throw a code. The Cam and crank sensors wont if its an odd ball intermittent issue. nipper
  16. Use subaru recomended plugs, as these cars can be picky. Also sounds like the car can use a tune up. Last time i got missfires on all wires was when the wires were old and wet. Replace the wires. nipper
  17. Since i will have some trust in your years of exp, do you have an ECU you can try? Also ( i am so glad i keep old test equipment) do you have an oscilliscope? nipper
  18. Does it change with a change in engine RPM or with the speed of the car. Check your differential/transmission lubricant ASAP first. Does it increase in volume with the speed? Is it a whine or a roar? nipper
  19. when it stalls does it sputer or just quit? Missfire can be fuel supply as well as ignition. nipper
  20. I agree a rebuilt isnt worth the mega bucks. The majority of these trannies go for ever it seems, so a used one is a safe bet. nipper
  21. What speed are we talking about? Also pumping the braake pedal does the same thing. What kind of tires are you running? nipper
