EJ22 into a VW Bug....problems with the ECU
ballitch replied to chn_tech's topic in Subaru Transplants
does the wire harnes come with the engine harness? if not then you need to get one of that year and model car it was pulled from. engine(intake) harnessess arent that hard to pull, just unbolt intake manifold and cut zipties. make sure you pull the right one. ~Josh~ -

lithia in oregon city is where my mom bought and takes her car for service. very nice guys, got to test drive a wrx for the hell of it while i was there one day!!! ~Josh~ -
are you doing a HG job? isnt that the EJ18 motor in that? if its the EJ22, are you putting EJ18 heads on it? aside from my questions, yes you can do it in the car, but i say pull the motor, you will have a much simpler timre while working on motor, and you'll be able to access the rear main seal and oil separator plate. ~Josh~

awesome.....is that a 5-lug i saw on that thing? or were those hubcaps leading me astray...? ~Josh~ -
yes, many differences, DO NOT use somnones wiring colors for any given harness, chances are its NOT the same and will not work for you. your just going to have to buy a haynes or chiltons manual with the wiring diagrams and figure out which harness you have and mark all the wires form the ECU, and trace them to whereever they end. long and tedious, but well worth it. ~Josh~

just make sure the EJ22 youre putting in is dual port(2 ports for each head) and you'll be fine. many parts swap between the EJ22 and EJ25, mainly for business reasons, dont have to make tons of different parts. as far as the exhaust on a GC impreza, i think the headers will fit, and thats about it, the rest of the exhaust is shorter than a legacy or a GL/Loyale. ~Josh~

you really outta search bud, will answer tons of questions, but no, your 1.8 liter carb or SPFI motor doesnt share much with the 2.2 in newer subys. i have a EJ22 in my 1986' GL wagon. many people have done this conversion. but it is HARD, and very time consuming. if yousearch a little bit for "EJ22 conversion" you will find a lot of info. look for threads by subarino, it will get you started. ~Josh~

what did you do with your EJ25 you pulled out of there? you could replace the HG's with the new 4-layer kind. ~Josh~

5 lug swap completed.

use the impreza knuckles, front axles (if you have a 25 spline tranny, if not you'll have to make custom axles using your 23 spline tranny DOJ) and hub. i dont know about the balljoint stuff, you MIGHT be able to put XT6 ball joints into the impreza knuckle to be able to use the XT6 lower control arm. maybe im missing something here....what control arm do you use to mate up to the EA82 control arm mounts? maybe I should read the USRM.... ~Josh~ -

my advice for those that want to do this conversion. use impreza front suspension parts, easier to come by, and more upgrades available, not to mention you dont have to grind down the XT6 front knuckles and drill out the holes for camber bolts. if i were to do it again, thats what i would do. but that looks awesome man, how do you load pictures that big into your posts? still trying to get my pics up. ~Josh~ -
is it poss. to put xt6 in 88 dl wagon
ballitch replied to jimpon's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
since you need the electrical to go along with the motor, you might as well throw the EJ in there. you get to keep the radiator in the stock place. that is so cool that someone would put a ER27 in their EA82 wagon, much props for that. but if you want a little less displacement, and almost the same horsepower and torque numbers, go with the EJ. you wont regret it. but if you have the XT6 motor and tranny and all that stuff. throw the 5-lug into your car along with the XT6 motor. but its going to be hard, and frustrating, but WELL worth it in the end. im reminded every time i shift gears how much it was worth it. it helped SO much this past weekend while i was at Mt. Bachelor. ~Josh~ -
grab a dual port motor, it makes things easier. calling B.S. on the crank/cam sprocket difference, not good business sense to make it not interchange. dual port/single port/ mt/ at doesnt matter, they all interchange. you might find you need the EJ22 fuel rails but i doubt it. you will however need the EJ22 intake, which might come with fuel rails. clutch flywheel, and discs all interchange, i think you can even use the WRX disc for better grab, use a better aftermarket pressure plate also, one with more clamping power. as far as swapping throttle bodies, only do it if the throttle position sensor wiring and sensors are different, some have 3 wires, others have 4, keep the throttle body that matches your harness. since your car is a 98', and you might have emissions laws in your area, get a motor that has heads W/ EGR port, that way you will pass emissions. ~Josh~

my imp is now EJ22!! woohoo! *added swap "instructions"*
ballitch replied to Ratty2Austin's topic in Subaru Retrofitting
im using a phase I EJ25 block and phase II EJ22 heads. the phase II heads flow marginally better than the phase I's. but if you combine a phase II block and any kind of EJ22 head, you end up with 11.5:1 CR. but if you go the route im going, you use phase II heads on phase I block you get about 10.8:1-11.0:1 CR. with either one you NEED to run premium gas. yes you can use the EJ22 engine management, since they are both MAF systems, not MAP. remember to match the intake manifold to the heads you have, so keep your EJ22 intake, im just going to take it off and leave it in the engine bay(along w/ AC compressor). lots of info over on nabisco. ~Josh~ -

okay, just so people know, Matt Monson over on nasioc has been doing these "hybrid" EJ motors for quite some time, and his advise for cheap reliable power is: if you have a EJ22 alread, DO NOT get EJ18 heads put on it. for one the EJ18 heads are horribly restrictive for that CR (11.5:1) , the EJ18 cams do have better lobes for power, but its totally offset by the crappy flow of the heads. Two, you can grab a phase I or II EJ25 shortblock for less than $300, i know because i paid $200 for my shortblock that sitting in my dads shop, awaiting the phase II EJ22 heads from my 98 legacy. just by swapping in a EJ25 shortblock, you gain 20-25 HP with block and increased CR. if you DO swap in the EJ25 block, you MUST (strongly advised, not a must) send the cams to a place like delta cams in tacoma, WA. they will grind them to a more aggressive profile and net you another 10-12 HP, add some headers, a lightweight crank pulley, and a cat-back or header-back 2.25'' exhaust and now you have 195-200 HP at the crank. most of the power form this combo comes from 2k-4k rpm, but doesnt fall on its face after 5000 like the EJ22 does, it will keep pulling. do some research before you jump into this though. im sorry for hijacking, glad to hear you got more power, now you dont have to go WOT to keep up with traffic. -
i dont know what CR you would end up with but it would be higher than normal, and you might have to run premuim fuel. and how would the DOHC ECU and wire harness run the SOHC heads? ~Josh~

steering wheel swap? IMPREZA wheel in a GL
ballitch replied to suberdave's topic in Subaru Retrofitting
i tried my legacy wheel on my GL today, the splines are the SAME, but, the tapered part that "seats" the wheel onto the steering shaft is larger in diameter on the GL than the legacys, so you just drill SLIGHTLY the legacy wheel to match the GL "seating" so the washers and nuts from the GL wheel will tie the legacy wheel onto the GL shaft. remember to drill the BACKSIDE of the legacy wheel, not the splined part, had to say it, or else someone like me would ask. ~Josh~ -
If you want an EJ22, why not get a Legacy?
ballitch replied to Monte's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
well for me it was about the same price for me to throw in a EJ22 into my car as it was to pay someone to put in a rebuilt or JDM EA82 to replace the motor. it only blew HG's, but i wanted to do a rebuild on it and i couldnt find any rod/main bearings kits, so i looked on here, and low and behold, people put the legacy/impreza engine into a car just like mine. and if you have to strip the SPFI harness down to get the engine only wires, why not spend a little more money and time to get a motor with 40-50 more HP and torque? ~Josh~ -
Cutting out at 4500rpm? updated and SORTED!
ballitch replied to Johnnyboy's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
i dont know for sure but i thought you weren't supposed to clean or mess with the older maf sensors because of some reason. thats vague isnt, sorry, but im sure someone with more learnin' will chime in. ~Josh~ -
wow, is it just me, or does that damn black cloud never seem to go away while your around? ~Josh~ IByesejenginesarewaybetter

thats a good question, are the EA82T internals forged? or stronger in general vs. non-turbo EA82. the carbed block into a SPFI car lowers compression so if you put a SPFI block under turbo heads you might get a little boost in compression. ~Josh~

steering wheel swap? IMPREZA wheel in a GL
ballitch replied to suberdave's topic in Subaru Retrofitting
not only are they weird and dorky looking, they arent very strong, you can bend them really easy if you push and pull on them. i am going to look into this, i have a spare legacy steering wheel that needs a home ~Josh~
