    Tires

    ^^^^ what he said.......
  3. by baja, you mean like the cali-to- mexico baja, like the baja1000? if your going for long distance and durablilty, id go legacy outback. taller ground clearance, can fit nice beefy tires under it, and it came with the 4.44 front and rear diffs. i wonder what year the EZ30 was first offered...i think it was 2000, so you cant throw that in it.....but you can throw a EG33 out of an SVX like previously stated. if you go outback...i would get an inch or so longer springs with less spring rate so you can travel over deep ruts and big bumps easily without breaking your spine. also, try to strengthen the chassis as much as possible. P.S. is there a minimum weight you have to weigh.....cause we can tell you what you can do to shave 300-400 lbs off that monster. ~Josh~
  4. sounds like its out of adjustment to me. and if its bad, and you adjust it back to were it should be, it might make alot more noise. ~Josh~
  5. well in order to charge a 12v battery, you must supply at LEAST 14.4v to it in order to charge it, anything less wont really work. so your 14.5v at 2500 is fine, but 12v at idle isnt. by the way, were these readings from a multi-meter or the istrument panel gauge, cause those are not accurate at all. as for your other problems regarding your stop lamp light, check the stop lamp bulbs in the back, they might be burned out and needing replaced. if thats not it it sounds like your blicker lights might be on their way out also. ~Josh~
  6. well my legacy steering wheel has the same splines as my EA82 car, its just the centering part of the wheel is smaller in diameter than the EA wheel so it doesnt go on the splines all the way, but a drill bit in a drill press with fix that.... ~Josh~
  7. what he said.....but my EJ22 doesnt seem to move much when its running/revving. either will work. as far as mileage goes....after my 5-lug swap and with the stock EA82 exhaust im getting about 24 highway, and 20-22 city. it helps if you stay out of the throttle, but thats not the reason i got the EJ22 ~Josh~
  8. as i understand it, the tranny tunnel has the have the crap pounded out of it for the larger EJ tranny to squeeze in there. the impreza and legacy trannys are mostly 4.111, not the 3.90 in your tranny, but since you have the whole drivetrain you wont have to worry about trying to match diff to tranny. you'll need your drivshaft to be shortened because the legacy/impreza trannys are longer because of the AWD. ~Josh~
  9. trailer brakes are a MUST...doesnt matter what kind of brakes your car has, chances are it cant stop a boat too!

    Rock Rails??

rock rails to keep from denting/puncturing the underbody? might help, and add a place to jack car up if placed right. not really much to hurt besides rear diff, oil pan and tranny. ~Josh~
  11. a rear LSD would help alot, i know becuase i also need one!!! that is such a good place to mud man, nice and flat area with a deep hole for rooster tails. the best part of buying a piece of land and wheeling on it is you can charge people money to wheel on it.....might even pay for payment each month. just have a hose running during the summer and hot months. ~Josh~
  12. keep in mind the autobox wiring harness only has like 25 more wires than the manual tranny harness. and the best harness for performance would be the EJ18 manual tranny ecu and harness, but it is OBD-II, which means alot more wires and lights and other stuff. if you want more cut and dry route, grab a 1990-1994 ecu and harness from a legacy and use it, less wires and only one o2 sensor. the EJ18 ecu has better timing and fuel maps for higher rpms, and it has a higher rev limit because of the smaller motor. you CAN run a EJ22 to higher revs, but be careful. since the EJ18,20,22,25 are all MAF based ECU's, you can use any harness to power any motor, pretty much.....yes the EJ20 did come in N/A form, just not here in the U.S. dont give up yet, it is a very desirable swap. when/if you get your EJ22, make SURE you get the dual exhaust port version, i didnt and i regret it, mainly because im getting a header for my legacy and would like to re-use the legacy header on the GL, but i cant. ~Josh~
  13. since i went from stock tires to the 5X100 bolt pattern and 1'' larger diameter rims and tires, i definately noticed an increase in time to get up to speed, but the gears go farther and i can cruise at a slightly lower rpm. but i still have the stock exhaust restricting the EJ22, so i think ill regain some power. i cant imagine how you guys deal with 27-29'' tires with the stock EA82, i couldnt do it. but keep in mind, our cars are like tipped over refrigerators on wheels, lots of drag and not a whole lot of power. ~Josh~
  14. disagree, only way to remove through the bottom is to remove the engine crossmember, and that would require removing most of the suspension. and you would need an alignment afterwards. if you are pulling the trans, pull both motor and tranny at same time. unhook and mark all wiring you unhook. take pictures if you need to, no shame in that. grab yourself a haynes/chiltons manual if you already havent, it will help for the most part but those books are missing alot of good/needed material. but they should work for what you want to do. ~Josh~
  15. okay...take me seriously... 1st of all your car will never be fast without a motor swap, and having been recently in your shoes ( im 23) i would say keep the stock motor for now. your in highschool and dont have much money, unless mom and dad are paying for it. i would go with a 2'' header-back exhaust, get rid of that stupid 2nd catylitic converter (unless you have emissions testing in your area). if you have emissions testing and cant do exhaust i would say shortblock swap. not to spendy, but will take mechanical knowledge and the ability to read, ask your dad to help you, if dad doesnt know jack about cars, ask a friend at school that mods the engine of his car. if he is at all open minded he will help you. doesnt matter if its a honda or whatever. have him help you do the shortblock swap. you need the shortblock from a carbed EA82. your compresion will go up, and if you ping or knock, you might have to go to plus/medium grade gas. that wont net you much for power, maybe 4-6 hp. please say if you have emissions in your area, if not we can help ALOT more!!! and by all means tint the windows, get a decent stereo and subs. i took my EA82 wagon to the drive-in and shook mountain dew 2 liters off the roof of my car with my bass, and got complements. ~Josh~
  16. for your own sanity, ditch the second turbo. it will only cause you grief, besides, the EJ20G spools turbos fairly soon. but holy crap that thign is going to haul a$$!! ...........makes me wonder if i did the wrong EJ swap............... ~Josh~
  17. well since you made up your mind already it wont matter what i say...but ill say it anyway. the wiring isnt hard so much as its time consuming and eye-tiring. if you go wire by wire, and double check yourself as you go, you should be fine. for all of those that wish to do this swap. start with a EJ18 harness and use the EJ22 or EJ25 or whatever. this will get you better high-rpm timing and fuel maps from the ECU. ~Josh~
  18. theres a couple options if you use the EA gear box. A. you twist the input shaft. or B. you destroy ALL of your synchros. im with suberdave on this one, since he recently put a EJ20G into his EA wagon. ~Josh~
  19. any EJ motor will fit, except the twin turbo kind. they will even bolt up to your stock tranny. you can swap in a 2.5RS motor or a wrx motor. the 2.5RS motor will run off your EJ18 ecu and wiring, the wrx motor on the other hand will REQUIRE the use of a wrx wiring harness and ecu, and some other odds and ends. take a look around nasioc.com, lots of info there. ~Josh~
  20. keep in mind that the turbo coupe doesnt weigh too much, probably 1500 lbs less than an SVX, and with at LEAST 130 hp from a early legacy ecu and wiring, you shouldnt see too much of a drop in mileage. but tranny cooler and bigger exhaust are a must if you plan on getting the most from the motor and tranny combo. ~Josh~
  21. search and ye shalll find that info. all the guess work has been done for you, thats why i did this conversion. ~Josh~
  22. thats what i did, i used 96 impreza motor with 1990 legacy wiring and ecu. had to swap throttle body to a 4-wire throttle pos. sensor, and had to plug off EGR on intake manifold. ~Josh~

    Brakes?

dont use wrx front rotors for a brake upgrade, it will HURT your braking, not help it. the larger rotors up fornt will shift even more brake bias forward. subarus in general have a good deal of front bias on their brakes. if anything get bigger brakes for the rear ( H-6 upgrade) or if you have drum in back, replace with disc. ~Josh~
  24. you can buy the front springs from an 86-89 honda accord, and put them on your rear struts. they are a LOT stiffer, and you need to cut about 1 1/2'' - 2'' off of them, i didnt cut mine for a while and it looked dorky, not to mention it would braek your neck everytime you went over a speedbump in a parking lot. as for the front, if you can find RX springs, they are a little stiffer, and a little ( 1/2'') longer but not what your looking for. ~Josh~
