ya just so ya know, AWD only works when you use throttle, thats how it transfers power "from the wheels that slip, to the wheels that grip," whenever i go driving in snow i always find a parking lot or empty church parking lot and get re-used to driving in snow, after about 2 hours im good to go............ . ~Josh~

thanks bud.

new batch of EJ swap ?s (electrical etc)
ballitch replied to baccaruda's topic in Subaru Retrofitting
ya to reassure everyone, I cranked her over with clutch out and she moves, with no weird grinding noises or anything. just dont use 3/8 '' thick stuff for your adapter, your starter teeth will hate you for it. ~Josh~ -
i think you need to take out the dash and all that stuff, I bought my harness from a guy on nabisco forum. one thing is for sure, save yourself an extra 10 or so hours of wiring by getting harness form a MT car, so much easier to get one from an OBD-1 era car also. I got most of the soldering and heatshinking done this weekend, next weekend ill see if she'll fire up once i get the loom all together and grounded and powered and the o2 sensor stuff done and the fuel pump wired in and etc. God i hope im doin this right. ~Josh~

one problem there bud, subaru likes to use different color codes for different models and years, so a 1991 legacy w/ no CC or ABS will have a totally different wiring colors for the same wires, like austin said, if you take your time and isolate the wires that go from engine to ecu then you should be ok, i will enlighten more on the subject once the darn thing runs, until then i put a penny to my words on wiring. im gonna tackle the splicing tommorow so wish me luck. ~Josh~

Issues switching from 13" to 14"/15" wheels?
ballitch replied to Phaedras's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
i believe there was a thread recently that had tire size adjustments for miatas, oyu tyoe in your current stock tire size and then type the other tires sizes in and it would tell you the overall changes i.e.: 185/70/r14 vs. 225/75/r15 and etc etc. anyone got that, im on diff computer so i cant link it. ~Josh~ -
88 SPFI 4WD Code 34
ballitch replied to Flowmastered87GL's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
yes the 88's have the 60k mileage egr light do-dad, mine came on when i was going to the coast with my woman, scared the crap outta me, didnt know jack about subies back then, still dont know jack, just know more than not knowing jack, anyway i had her look it up in the operators manual and it said every 60k miles, and i had just rolled over 180k. -
i just got all the ecu related wires separated from the harness, it is amazing how much wiring you dont need. just have to solder and heatshink all conncections and run power and ground wires, and plumb in the o2 sensor in my exhaust, and fish all the loom behind my glovebox. someone needs to tell me how to load pictures from a digi onto this board, i plan on taking multiple pictures from many angles so everyone can see what i did. ill probably be done soon, need to be done before march 16, when my insurance renewal comes due..... ~Josh~

33's on a subaru, youve got to have some sort of power to move those heavy bi**hes. 8 inch lift and 33's, whats that like 18'' to the rear diff from the ground? ~Josh~ -
ya make them put back what you had in there man, that is bulls**t. thats why i come to these boards, so i make sure that my car doesnt get treated like a f**king honda. "whats that Mr. Jordan, your car has a total of 3 differentials, there is no way that a car can have 3 differentials, you must be mistaken, we here at (insert crappy auto-chop nationwide chain-name here) have never heard of such a vehicle." " I assure you Mr. Jordan that having ATF fliud in all 3 differentials will cause absolutely no problem to your vehicle, we made sure that your oil was red in color and not tannish-clear like other "inferior" oils." ~Josh~

what about your alignment, did it mess anything up or am i barking up the wrong tree, so to speak, and what about your odo and speedo, not to mention gearing? ~Josh~
-
i say do both of them, necessity is the mother of invention. you have obviously spent a good deal of time thinking this through. Is it bad to drive the AWD with the FWD fuse in? I think it is there for emergencys only, not for daily driving, can anyone tell me otherwise, i want to know if im FOS. That would be a great off-road asset though, sometimes all you need is FWD and sometimes you want 50/50 split at 50 mph, and not having to select gearing to 1st or 2nd gears, that way oyu can modulate the throttle for better control of vehicle, instead of having to give too much gas for a downshift and waiting for Duty Selenoid C to do its damn job. ~Josh~

atf fluid has a ton of detergent in it, change it out ASAP. the inside will be cleaner, thats for sure, but dont go very far on it. gear oil is for gears, and atf fluid is for AT and power steering, what kinda crack was that "mechanic" on when he told you he had atf fluid in the rear diff. almost as bad as jiffy lube putting atf fluid in your crankcase.
-
take care of your car and it will take care of you, good point, i say fix it, find the leak make your husband find out where the leak is, you have the best bargaining chip ever...........uh....ya..........take it to the mechanic youlike the most and tell him/her the story. there isnt any reason why this car wont go for another 5 years if you keep doing the maintanence on it. ya youre spending money on a crappy old car, but at least you dont have to pay payments on a new car and higher insurance. ~Josh~

Uncorrectable Front End Vibration
ballitch replied to Syrinx's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
if youre getting it on acceleration and decelleration, i would have to second the driveline notion, even if oyure not in 4WD the driveline still has to be moved, maybe the rear driveline stabilizer thingy is loose or your u-joints are bad, have you checked the rear-end for loose bolts or unusual toe-in, oyu said you had it aligned, did they do the back ? I had a similar problem, but it was just a torn CV boot that lost all its grease. ~Josh~ -

I am surprised that this isnt in the usrm archives for conversions of "frankenstein" nature, I have only been thinking about this conversion for about 3 months, cant wait to get done and help out with a write-up..............I need a life. ~Josh~ P.S. oh btw bump for all the converters out there.........i feel your pain.
