I am going to have to agree with Austin, i think i would like the EJ18 in my EA car instead of the extra 30 horsepower, i think that the 5 speed D/R would handle 110 ponies better than 140 ponies, not to mention they would probably get them same gas mileage, the only benefit besides shear muscle would be the EJ22's ability to deal with a 3 or 4 inch lift with bigger tires better. But when you get used to a car with 80 or 85 horse power, 110 sounds like a godsend. ~Josh~

Its not too hard to yank an engine outta there if you got a cherrypicker, and an engine stand, and all the tools your going to need, and a helper that knows at least what a subaru engine looks like, not to mention all the replacement gaskets and seal your going to want to replace while you got that b**ch out of the car, but besides that its no prob, alot easier than doing an HG job on a carb'd car, label everything, god that would suck. ~Josh~

You dont need alot of fab skills, i made my own adapter plate and all that stuff to mate my EJ22 to my 86's D/R tranny, I know it sounds like it hard, but if you want something enough you'll get it. I had access to my dads shop, which had some decent tools, but mostly i had to think of ways to make do. And mudrat's "package" comes with returned and redrilled EA82 flywheel, turned to XT6 spec, hardware is included, that means flywheel bolts and such, and comes with the adapter plate of course, keep in mind you can drill out your EA82 flywheel, but there will be "slop" in its movement, i used some steel alloy dowel pins (3/16 diameter) got them at a fasteners store, they have like 5-7 hundreds pounds of shear strength, i used 3. this is begining to sound like a USRM "how- to" manual. dont worry i will post one, with guidance from mudrat and austin with accuracy and such. Keep in mind that aluminum is expensive, and you HAVE to have it cut with a plasma cutter, or a darn jigsaw but screw that man i didnt have all day to spend behind a darn jigsaw, you can make yours out of steel but i opted not to, cost me like $140 to make 2 adapter plates, and no i will not sell you my spare unless I get Mudrat's approval, I WILL NOT undercut anyone's livelyhood, so make your own or call him, hate to be wongleflute, but thats how "we" do. Again, the wiring is going to be the biggest obstacle, i had no problems......ya i had a few what am i talking aobut..........but that comes expected with a radical conversion like these. mechanically it isnt that hard if you do your research, i knew nothing aobut this conversion until i used the search feature and made a few PM's to a few choice people, and im still not done, but i hope to be shortly, after all you gots to work yo. its all about the benjamins....and subies of course. ~Josh~

Dont try to "look" at the fuel pump on your 92, i believe its in the fuel tank itself, but all in all, check your hardlines and softlines, and grab yourself a new fuel filter while your at it. ~Josh~

Intermittent compression issue 88 gl ea-82
ballitch replied to awareuvlite's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
That sounds like an awesome way to clean that all that crap outta there, i might try that on ym EJ22.........hmmmmm........................ ~Josh~ -
you can run platinum, but NKG seem to be the best, what ever you do dont use the iridium spark plugs, they burn too hot for subie motors, or so im told. ~Josh~

ya man you gots to have the 5 speed D/R, that thing is awesome, nothing like climbing a 60 degree angle hill with a $500 car. the conversion manual is up and running, wish it would have cam out like 2 months ago.......damn EJ22 swap. ~Josh~

i think the Cam Sensor is on the top of the engine on the right side, you will see a couple wires in a heatshink-type covering going to a connector, right side meaning looking down at the engine from under the hood. I have no idea why they would say the cam angle sensor would be the problem, if it has no power for a bit, then normal power sounds like a fuel or spark kinda thing, or maybe a loose ground? Did you ask them why it was a cam angle sensor problem, BTW are there any Subaru dealerships over in hawaii? lots of questions for a new join-ee, but the more answers you give us the better chance we have of giving you a better guess on whats wrong. ~Josh~

I think this is a very popular conversion, hope noah and i get to write up a "how to" manual at the end of his and my EJ22 conversion. Ill be done soon, but thats what we all say. Thanks for all the help so far Austin and John. ~Josh~

just remember with larger tires you lose gearing and your speedo and odo will be off, but max tire size i would say.....185/70/R14 is stock so........195/85/R14 would probably be a safe assumption, but get all the tires the same time and size, or you will screw your AWD up royally if you have AWD. i believe you should give Mudrat79 a hollar to see if he has made or is willing to fab you up a lift kit for your 94 wagon, but it will cost money so dont bring beer, well bring beer and money . make sure that your front tires dont rub on your struts and springs, you can adjust the front and rear sway bars up to an inch for better ride height I believe, but your cv's will go out quicker, like shorten cv lifespan by about 50k. you should have got an old subie man, god those things kick A$$. ~Josh~

What does an EA82 weigh?
ballitch replied to belizeanbus's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
amen to the cherry picker idea, the EA82's dopnt weigh thta much, but they weigh alot after 10 mins holding it there half bent over, then they feel like they weigh a ton. my brother and i lifted my old blown HG EA82 out of my 86' GL no problem, just make sure you remove ALL the bolts. ~Josh~ -
you can turn fwd cars into awd as long as the mounting holes for the rear diff and suspension is there, but be sure to match rear diff and front (tranny) diff. ratios, the turbo legacys are 3.70 i believe, so make sure you grab the rear diff. out of the turbo legacy car. you also might have to shorten or lenghthen the driveline. and of course grab the pedal box and clutch cable, or if hydro clutch grab the clutch master cylinder and all that stuff. thats about all that i can think of. good luck. ~Josh~

part time 4wd to full time dual range with diff lock
ballitch replied to stngllhm's topic in Subaru Retrofitting
didnt the 87 GL-10 come with a dual range 5 speed? but i guess you want full time 4wd, with the option of lower range, right? ~Josh~ -
whoa whoa whoa, are you guys saying that i could have saved myself 2 hours of my time by buying a nissan sentra maf adapter instead of making my own, darnit. too little too late. ~Josh~

let me think, besides the fact that California passed some law saying that all cars sold in Cali. have to be hybrids by 2015 or something, glad to know that that stupid SUV craze is over with. ~Josh~

awesome man, thanks for the info. just making sure i dont put wrong transmission in car, are the front diff gear ratios in a 1990 legacy wagon different than the ones in my 98 legacy L? i know ive seen some with 4.111 gears, 3.9 gears and 4.44 gears and so on and so forth......both cars are non-turbo BTW. ~Josh~

Carb to EFI conversions
ballitch replied to swervey87gl's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
to be completely honest, if i wasnt doing the EJ22 swap i would totally do the efi swap, i mean cmon people, theres a reason they dont make cars anymore with carbs, except those retards in NASCAR, "your car MUST have a carb", "what, why", "casue this is NASCAR son!, we love huge carbs and drive in circles bi**hes, YA!!....WOO!!!!" sorry, guys, but WTF is the point in going in circles and calling yourself a darn "racecar driver". okay im done with the hijack/rant. ~Josh~ -
but then you have to look at those 2 unused holes.......ickypoo. but to each his own i guess. ~Josh~
-
nice, just need a second opinion in addition to your statement subaron. You know do research first, then do the actual work, also, that 1990 legacy is OBD-1 right? I just thought of this yesterday, I need a darned O2 sensor for my EJ22-86' GL swap, might just gank it off the 1990......hmmm,..... or better yet, JY..............i love JY's. ~Josh~

Het there peeps, I just need some help identifying a tranny from a 1990 lgacy wagon, a sticker in cabin says full time 4wd, how is that different than AWD? heres the tranny code: TY752VA1AA ; VIN: JF2BJ63C3LG901388, any help would be much appreciated, any info regarding the exact difference between AWD and Fulltime-4WD. THanks everyone, ~Josh~

to my knowledge, whjich consists of what ive learned form this board, no there isnt any rims sharing the elusive 4x140 mm bolt pattern. but good news, knock out 2 studs on your hubs, opposite of each other, grab your self a toyota 6 lug rim, bolt that bi**h on, mark the new stud holes on the hub, drill them out, and voila, you made your 4 lug hubs into 6 lug hubs, grab 3 more toyota rims and repeat, follow by getting some new rubba for the RU. God i love that conversion. ~Josh~

1983 wasn't THAT long ago
ballitch replied to thedoctor's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I have to agree, Lithia Subaru in oregon city is awesome, i cant wit to get my conversion and lift in so i can go around to all the dealerships i know of and see which subie techs say " badass dude" and which ones say, "did the EJ22 motor come out in 1986?" ~Josh~
