  1. nothing succeeds like overkill. these hondas are basically a mini cooper knock off right? scott, wanna sell this thing?
  2. if you use impreza hats it will be ok. you may have to add some washers to the top nut. I am not sure what it will do to ride height. the valving is probably a little stiffer due to the wrx being heavier but, since they are adjustable who cares.
  3. never driven a 142 with a decent suspension setup and tires have you?stick to what you *think* you know about. totally agree. but it seems like many around here have some vendetta against anything with a solid axle and live in a dream world where lifted/way stiff subaru independent suspension/maxed out CV angles is somehow better than everything else. sure buddy, whatever you say. in no way are you going to get decent travel out of a bug without stuff like extended trailing arms, 930 CV's, etc. 30" of travel is trophy truck territory. and solid axles going away? funny. independent suspension for a rock crawler is BIG $$$$ simply because capable production parts arent availabe. ever price a custom machined high angle high strength CV joint? there have been what, 2 independent suspension rock buggies, and one has been scrapped and destroyed. its just not cost effective stuff.for speed over rough terrain, independent suspension is way superior. I'm actually trying to figure out how I can get more wheel travel out of my legacy. just remember that everything has its place. car IRS like a SVT cobra would be good because there arent any issues with pinion rotation, the diff and axles are damn strong, and its readily available from SVT owners who SWAP IN A SOLID AXLE. hahahah jaguar IRS is heavily used in hot rods, and would be easy to customize to whatever length you need it. anyone who has seen one knows what I mean. oh yeah, it uses a D44 diff. that have enough locker and gear options for yah?
  4. the wheel has been around since the stone age, we still use those. maybe the fact that old technology like the solid axle is still being used is more a testament to its usefulness and effectiveness rather than it being outdated? look at some of the solid axle road cars that can HANDLE. AE86, most rwd volvos, RX-7's, etc. solid axles just plain work for offroading too. leaf springs are not only cheap and rugged but set up right can perfrom very well. links and coils, even better. maybe in principle independent is better, but in practicality solid axles have some definite advantages especially in slow speed situations where each wheel does not have to react fast individually to uneven bumps. it is possible to have a independent suspension that flexes well, but pretty costly to do so. just depends on what you want it to do. from what I can tell, for slow speed stuff the ruggedness, aftermarket, and articulation of solid axles is a better option than subaru IFS, especially given the low budgets most of us have. just my 2c. I dont have a subaru wheeler but if I build one it will have a transfer case and toyota axles. (flame suit on) everybody do what they want, okay? but, I'm sure that this debate is
  5. I was talking about EA81. that conversion is for EA82 correct? or will the ea82 method work on an ea81.
  6. if you are going to all of that trouble why not just do something like a toyota 8" or ford 8.8" solid axle? cheaper, way easier, lighter, a lot stronger, better flex probably, plenty of gears, diffs, etc. if you were doing a prerunner sort of deal, IFS would be pretty cool. you may run into issues with teh diff having an offset to it, one side will have a long extension coming out of the diff to cross over the center line of the truck, transfer cases are usually offset. with the IFS, you could get HUGE brakes too. there is also the Jaguar IRS which is very easy crossmember setup and common to put in stuff like hotrods.
  7. it wont fit. unfortunately the USDM justy is a totally unique beast.
  8. lookin to make a new setup for max travel. want to stay with close to stock height legacy struts and gain stroke rather than total height. I am NOT looking to run forester struts or outback struts unless they are needed for a longer strut cartridge. I want to maximize stroke versus total strut length. anyone know what the limitations of legacy axles are as far as droop and stuff angle? anyway, I was thinking to get some strut inserts for something with longer travel than a legacy. considerations would be fitting into a legacy strut body and legacy top hat. I am also wondering if some truck shocks could be modified to fit in a strut application.
  9. there are other, better ways to diagnose a head gasket such as sniffing the coolant with an exhaust probe, watching for bubbles in the coolant reservoir, compression check, water in the oil, oil in the water, etc maybe run some cheapo oil through it for several miles and quickly change it out.
  10. wow! that looks great, good job, one of the cleanest yet on a subaru.
  11. for a ea81, how can you go about swapping to complete 5 lug parts in the front end ie the whole drivetrain/axles/knuckles out of a legacy? would shortening some axles by cutting, welding and sleeving be strong enough? I was thinking that maybe they would with a good deep weld really BURNED in on the axle, and a nice sleeve with fishmouths on both ends and some plug welds. but, if there is an easier way I am all ears.
  12. scoobyclimbs that bumper is sweet!
  13. so they inject it as liquid or gas? I'm amazed that fuel injectors can handle propane level pressures.
  14. oooohhh please do elaborate. on subarus?
  15. obey the signs. offroading has a bad enough name as it is.
  16. look at some circle track racing suppliers too, they have lots of good options for assembling a coilover kit though the price will be similar to groudn control.
  17. "impreza coilovers" http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/97-01-Subaru-Impreza-Dropzone-Coilovers-New_W0QQitemZ8055090198QQcategoryZ33586QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
  18. would be cool, but the ez30R seems better.
  19. I'm actually kinda surprised that the rock buggy crowd did not catch on to what the sandrail crowd has known for a long time: the ej is really a bad rump roast motor. 139lb long block can be built very strong very low center of gravity(especially inportant in a rock buggy) really good flowing heads like SOHC, ej20g, ej20k etc I dont have a ton of experience with offroading(though I would like to change that) but from what I can tell there is definitely a place for the guys playing with >$1000 subarus simply because they like them, to the richers going full throttle at insane obstacles in the name of pushing the limits. its all good. as far as turbo powerband, seems like the only time you would need a lot of power you are on the gas, and on it hard. most turbos capable of 450hp are going to be spooling by 35-4000 rpm anyway which is not out of the question. lag, that is what automatics are for.
  20. probably a good thing to have if you are tearing into an engine. on legacycentral there is a link somewhere to PDF files of the FSM's. not quite complete but it should have what you need. search around, I dunno where they are.
  21. how was traction, and did you ever get stuck?
  22. very cool, congratulations. bet it feels great! did you get the PM I sent you a couple days ago? if not well I am interested in LPG on a ej22+t. looking for knowledge on boosting with propane and its impossible to find. what mixer are you running? its hard to tell. how hard is it to tune propane for boost? you said something before about running the stock distributorless ignition on an ej22 to keep that spark but not fueling? if so I am really interested to find out how it is done and how well it works. basically I want about 300hp, was thinking to run an impco model E reg, 425 or 225 mixer, blow through. what do you think? your brat is wicked cool:cool:
  23. needs 2 1000 cc bike motors, 1 for the fronts 1 for the backs sequential 6sp 10,000RPM FTW
