  1. just run the damn covers. its quite easy for a piece of gravel to get bounced up there, even on road. only on an airplane would I go without covers.
  2. DOHC ej251 with thin HG's, and AEM though a stock ecu would work. if you have a nice high CR, a good tune, some cams, you should be up at 200hp. use teh 2.5RS trans, more strength. then get a borla header and stick a cat then a glasspack on the collecter and call it good. or what about a megasquirted EJ? I know it has been done, you would just have to go to EDIS.
  3. it will be easy to tell just by looking at the plastic timing belt covers...
  4. maybe there are some mods you can do to the power steering for more flow? I wouldnt be surprised if there was a restrictor in the rack or pump.
  5. rguyver your car is going to be so sick!!! and if I were you I would be hoping for 11's. I am curious as to how your doing the axles and suspension. I was going to build a EJ hatch with a 170 or so horse ej25 and D/R 5sp plus stock everything else(lol), but apparently hatches are actually kind of rare near me. it will have to wait for another day, maybe if I tire of my legacy by the time my turbo motor build is done, there will be a 350hp hatch running around. would require a lot more work for that kind of power and still be safe though. so is the ea81t as prone to head cracking as the ea82t, and have you ea folks tried cryogenically treating some heads? from what i hear it does wonders for the heat handling and expansion properties of cast aluminum. what is generally considered the upper level of reliable power in ea81t and ea82t? any bad rump roast NA builds using some dual weber 48 IDAs, big compression and cam?
  6. totally impossible. the turbo fluid reservoir is a sealed unit and cant be moved without causing a major reduction in turbo life. additionally, the exhaust is routed through the transmission which makes problems with the catylitic converter bracket when you put in a lift.
  7. clutch wear is not very easily quantifiable, so many variables. is your car a leaker? as legacy777 said, maybe some oil is getting on there. also maybe the clutch is out of adjustment.
  8. you must use the ej25 head gaskets, the ej22 ones will not match the water passages of the ej25 heads. you can use either variety of ej25 gasket, one is thin one is thick, to suit your CR. the clearance issue matty is talking about is because the motor is going in his brat. to tell the truth I have no idea on the size difference, though the valve covers of the SOHC are prety low profile but I cant speak for the DOHC. matty, so far the plan is to get the motor together, get it running on megasquirt, and build some forced induction in the form of either a garrett T3/T4 probably .63, or some sort of blower. I would like to fit a vortech V5 but they are kinda spendy. maybe I will build a manifold for an eaton M90 with the charger under the plenum. but I am still in parts sourcing/rebuilding phase.
  9. I am actually building an ej22e block/sohc ej25 head motor right now as well. reliability should be fine. flow will be MUCH better. you will have a variety of options for a forced induction friendly CR. SOHC or DOHC heads, SOHC is bigger combustion chamber. use either SOHC or DOHC ej25 headgaskets, get the metal ones. the SOHC are thinner, DOHC are thicker. you can get 8.3:1 with SOHC heads and a DOHC gasket, thats what I am doing. thats the lower of the combos you can get with the ej22e block and pistons. I may put some ej22t pistons in that motor for 7.6:1, not sure yet. since you are down under, look at getting some ej20k or ej20g heads from a wrx, they have amazing flow and will lower your CR as well, though I do not know by how much. play around with the numbers on here: http://wac.addr.com/auto/obs/turbo/ejcalcs.html
  10. search about it on legacycentral, it is the same chassis as your impreza and has been done lots of times. I believe it involves putting your top hats on the wrx struts, might require a washer or 2 in between the strut bearing and the strut in front or something like that. there are a bunch of threads on legacycentral.
  11. could a stock height legacy on wrx takeoffs make it?
  12. prerunner... gen 1 brat, full tube chassis basically just skinned with brat sheetmetal crawford 2.8 with a holset and autronic, 600hp or so built 4eat, full manual, high stall 4340, extended axles with A arm suspension front and rear, 25" travel with bypass King coilovers some sort of locker in the rear rockcrawler... ea81 wagon turbo/propane ej25, 4eat set up as rwd(duty solenoid C locked), toyota 4.7:1 case adapted unimog 404 axles big TSLs
  13. who has the fastest street EA81? EA82? just the car, any engine though a balls out EA81T or something would be pretty cool.
  14. I have seen a pic of a rabbit(or maybe it was a caddy) with an ej22 in it. apparently from oz, surprise surprise. my old rabbit was such a POS, had an ABA block JH head, CIS-E out of a mk2, and a gutted interior. it was fast, loud, ghetto, but surprisingly enough very reliable. I want to get a rabbit again soon, with a build along the lines of no dashboard level of guttedness, high compression 2.1 16v, megasquirt, and ITB's, quaife, 14x8's, stiff springs, stock ride height. autocross stance. either that or a DuRabbit using 2 vr6's, and slightly lowered on some corrado wheels.
  15. heck yes! rabbits are my favorite VW and EJ's are my favorite motor. I'm curious if the ej will fit between the stock frame horns, and what you are doing for axles.
  16. 2nd is part of the mainshaft so you will need a whole new gearset most likely. maybe have a stock gearset cryogenically treated, should be like 50 bucks. take it easy on the clutch dumps and crashing 2nd gear also.
  17. man, this is the kind of thing I dream about. you might as well be building a full chassis for this thing out of 1" square tube, round tube if you have the skill/tools. 1. fwd legacy trans in the rear converted to cable shift, add your bad rump roast EJ. build a double wishbone rear suspension using legacy rear knuckles. the top ball joint could have an adapter to the strut mount. 2. an R160 at each end, a 1000cc shaft drive bike motor at each end. 5 lug knuckles with double wishbone suspension and motorcycle shocks. figure some way to reverse the motorcycle trans output on the front drivetrain. 3. two chain drive bike motors in the rear, each driving one wheel. rear suspension would be two swingarms using some sort of knuckle from a rwd car, with a chain drive and sprocket adapted to the hub of said rwd front knuckle. one side would require a jack shaft to get the drive of the bike trans close enought to the hub. OPTIONAL: a turbo system using one turbo for both motors, making it in effect a straight 8, sequential 6sp, turbocharged, mid engine, economy car subaru. 4. R1 motor/trans with the output hooked directly to an R160, mounted with narrowed legacy axles and custom double wishbone with legacy rear knuckles. 5. some other badass fwd drivetrain in the rear. VW 1.8t, pontiac grand prix, taurus SHO, etc. I would do #2. it would be one of the more difficult of my ideas but the awd would be so cool FWIW, these make perfect sense in my head.
  18. a wrx trans would not be much of an upgrade. for strength, your option is basically a set of PPG gears which is retarded expensive. dog boxes are cool as hell but expensive as hell. or you could go to a 4eat which is stronger but saps power. for better ratios, a 4.44 forester trans or an RA gearset will be better. your top end will suffer though.
  19. I will be there most likely. maybe I will even wash my car.
  20. its called a rat bike and they are awesome.
  21. on some terrain it would probably be a lot better to be able to lock up all tires very solid unlike the e brake. I know mine is in good shape and adjusted correctly but it doesnt work that well especially on something steep. I'm sure you could rig the hand throttle to just be an add on, leaving the gas pedal operational.
  22. why not bash up something like a wagon instead of a rare rump roast RX? RX's are so much cooler as fast road cars anyway.
  23. JDM exhaust? the shipping on that will be ridiculous. just go to the exhaust shop and have em bend you up a 3" TBE.
