Check for vacuum leaks. A vacuum leak will make it difficult for your car to idle or run at low rev's. Easiest way to check is to get a can of carb-cleaner, and spray it around the intake manifold while your car is idling. If your idle picks up or if the engine smooths out, you know there's a leak. Just spray closer to some hoses to locate the leak. -Brian

stupid axle nuts...
TheSubaruJunkie replied to hooziewhatsit's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Sounds like it might be your bearings. Since the castle nut rotates with the hub and CV's, i dont see how that would cause a grinding noise. -Brian -
Just ask him more details about his turbo. Ask who installed it (since we all know its not factory). Then ask what his boost is at, and if he plans on installing an intercooler (unless he sais he has one already). I used to have a roomate who was a pathological liar. Most of them dont even know they're lying. They just say things they hope is true, to grab attention. Just bombard him with questions until he fess's up and sais "okay okay, i dont even know what a turbo is" -Brian

Boost Gauge install complete.
TheSubaruJunkie replied to TheSubaruJunkie's topic in Subaru Retrofitting
damn i probably should have left the glycerin in the guage. Im getting alot of needle vibration under boost. Makes it hard to read actual boost pressure. Oh well. -Brian -
Tex, I'll definatly go back and get that other grill for you. I cant do it till after xmas tho cause i wont have any cash. I hope i dont get flamed. I was sick of having light grey trim. MAkes the car look like a granny's car. Now it has some definition to it. I'd like to get some new RX decals to replace my fading decals, i think that will add alittle more to the look. -Brian

Since my camera sucks, you can hardly even see the dial on the gauge. But this gauge rocks! Here's where I installed it: The visability is great. Shouldnt distract me from the road at all. Here's a better picture of the gauge: The gauge itself isn't a true "boost" gauge. Its a grade A glycerin filled Compound Gauge. I got it from McMaster-Carr online. The guage reads from -30psi to +15psi and is 1.5" in diameter. I was trying to avoid the ricey look at all costs. I ended up removing all the glycerin cause the air bubble was making it hard to read, but it operates just fine as a boost gauge. The gauge itself was $22, i also got the T fitting, 20' of hose and a female nipple for the end of the gauge. Total cost for everything was $48 and shipped to my door. 2 day delivery Im very impressed with the quality of this gauge. It wouldnt have hurt to goto the 2.5" gauge but i think 1.5" is plenty for me. Now for a manual boost controller -Brian

Yeah. NV Zeno is in Carson City as well. Im overdue for a Reno junkyard run so we'll need to get together sometime. There are a few others in Reno too, and we've been talking about a Tahoe drive to play in the snow. -Brian -

Which pick-n-pull? Are you in Reno or Carson City?? -Brian -
I masked everything and re-painted it. I used bumper paint, its dark grey and replicates a real bumper look. The paint worked out great too. Went on in 1 thin coat and dryed in almost 30min. I was worried the cold weather we're having would make it difficult for the paint to cure, but it's lasted a day so far and I even scrubed some dirt off the bumper today and no paint faded. Now... to work on that grill I got. -Brian

lemme know if your already getting one russ. if you are, i'll send this one to brad. -brian -
A junkyard is your only hope in most cases. You can look for a peugeot recycler or you can redrill your hubs to 6x140 to replace the 4x140. That way you can use almost any Toyota 6 lug rim. You wont find anything near 28" for a 13" rim. -Brian

Found a new junkyard.
TheSubaruJunkie replied to TheSubaruJunkie's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Does that come from a Legacy or Impreza? If so, i'll never see one in a junkyard. Anything 95+ goes to auto dismantlers. -Brian -
1981 suspension adjustment for rear and front end.
TheSubaruJunkie replied to A DOG's topic in Off Road
If you have a wagon, lift your rear seat up. Then you'll see a rubber cap that you remove. After you remove that cap, you'll find a 17mm nut that you can turn. This adjusts your rear torsion bar. For the front, there are 2 bolts on each Strut. Just under your spring. YOu can use a 19mm wrench to adjust them. Its a pain in the rump roast since those bolts probably see more dirt and road grime than anyother peice of your car. You wont get much more than 1.5" out of the adjustment. -Brian -

No 70's stuff. Those cars usually find their way to the crusher before they make it out onto the yard. There's a junkyard in Nevada that is notorious for its 70's subaru's however, thats where I went for any EA71 parts I was looking for. -brian -
A buddy of mine told me of this other junkyard in town, so i thought i'd go check it out. Not many subarus, maybe 8 total... but of those 8 were 2 RX's One '86 RX Sedan and one '87 RX Coupe. I snagged the coupes grill so I can experiment, and I also snagged the cargo cover from the RX. Both cars were complete, minus the rear diff's of course. But the coupe still had its kit, and it was pretty straight. Then I decided to drive across town to the Junkyard I Frequent. Didnt find many new cars. There were 3 rows of subaru's, and there were two EA82 Coupes. One had the RX grill, the other was a DL with composit headlights and no grill. I tried my damndest to get the steering wheel from the '91 Loyale, but just couldnt get it off for the life of me. I'll need to return with a puller. But out of all the EA82's there, there had to be 4 or 5 there with aftermarket stereo consoles. All had the same one's and they screwed right into place. So I snagged one for myself, left the others behind. All in all, it was a good day. Sure would have liked to get that steering wheel... oh, and some mint seats that were in a Toyota MR2. -Brian

My 87 has no power door locks, but does have power windows. If they dont work, stop being lazy and just lean over ;P -Brian

Those are awesome! -Brian

Hahaha. Is this all on the RX? My RX doesnt have power door locks. And well... you knew your clutch was going to slip. Didnt you? How is the WRX clutch disc project turning out? -Brian
