Limited Slip Differential
TheSubaruJunkie replied to Jack in Norfolk's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
All LSD's are 3.9. Most EA81's are 3.7 The LSD would need to be converted (directions can be found in the USRM) There are no lockers for subaru's. You can weld your spider gears and create a locker out of an open diff. But you cannot use it for street use. -Brian -
Limited Slip Differential

EA82 Cars will only have them. The LSD's came stock on RX's from 1987+ but were available as an option for all EA82 cars i believe from 1985 on. -Brian -
Limited Slip Differential
TheSubaruJunkie replied to Jack in Norfolk's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I heard if you install 2 clutch packs into a LSD, it locks it up REAL tight like a locker. not sure if it can be done on a sube. -Brian -
Limited Slip Differential
TheSubaruJunkie replied to Jack in Norfolk's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
To correct Cabooob.... If you have a LSD, and one tire is completly off the ground, chances are all the power will goto that wheel off the ground. Only a true locker will transfer equal power to both axle's at all times. -Brian -
Limited Slip Differential
TheSubaruJunkie replied to Jack in Norfolk's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
If you look at an open diff... it will turn the wheel with the LEAST ammount of traction. If you look at a locked diff. it will turn BOTH tires with EQUAL amount of traction. No matter what. But when one tire spins faster than the other, the slower tire will be forced to turn the same speed which makes it chirp or drag. A LSD will send equal amount of traction to both wheels, but when one tire rotates faster than the other, the diff allows it to slip (limited amount of slip) so that the diff doesnt bind and break. Not as good as a locker, but alot better than an open diff. -Brian -
Shannon. With what you want to do with your Wagon, your best bet is to use the 4spd dual range that came with your car, convert the LSD to a 3.9 and just run with that. I have no idea how that center lock is supposed to be wired, and it might be a huge headache like the EA81T was. -Brian

hahahah I thought you'd all like that. You should have been in the car with me when I anounced that. A co-driver asked me what I had in the car (he was suprised in the power of the lil' 1600ccc). I stated that it was a 4cyl V8, and everyone in the car laughed at me and then started to question me. Had to be there. -Brian

I could be wrong. In actuallity... ive never even seen a full time 4WD Auto. So im not sure if they have locking centers or not. But ive seen plenty of 5spd's -Brian

So, with the diff lock off... its still powering both rear and front? I thought since it was an open diff... it would transfer power to whichever axle had the least amount of friction. Something i've been pondering, because if I get this GL10 TurboWagon sold, i'll probably have to drive it to deliver it. I was thinking of removing both rear CV's in order to drive it. Since it has miss-matching tires, i dont want to blow the tranny with the FT4WD. -Brian

It is alot different than any Jeep locker. The diff lock is built into the tranny. it only locks the center diff. Your front and rear diff are still open (or rear might be LSD, depending on model). You cannot remove the locking center diff and install it into a Tranny. Diff Locks only come on Full Time 4WD 5 speed Transmissions. If the car is not Full Time, than it doesn't even have a Center Diff to Lock. Hopped up Brats, Hatch's Wagons... Any 4speed or 5 speed 4WD tranny have no center diff's, they use a different type of mechanism to create the 4WD when engaged, and that mechanism act's like a locked diff at all times (when 4WD is activated). You cannot take a Single Range 5spd with diff lock and convert it to Dual Range. 1987+ Subaru RX's are the only model that came with Dual Range Full Time 4WD Transmissions with a Center Diff lock. Honestly, I wouldnt want to do any heavy off-road use with a Full Time 4WD tranny because it still has an open center diff, and if the diff lock malfunctions, your going to be set back using an open center diff. -Brian

Sweet82... dont take any offence from this post... we're just pickin on ya! All fun and games. To make you feel better, when i got my 1st car (my 1st subaru) i thought the engine was a 4cyl V8. I had no idea what a V8 really stood for, and I had no idea WHAT my car had. Now you know And knowing has 1/2 the battle. -Brian

Well, if there was a chain it would probably need to be replaced. But there is no chain. Just gears. 2 of them, one driving the other. We could drive our cars into the ground with 500,000 miles on it, and the valve timing would be as dead on as the day it was set by the factory. God i love the EA81's! -Brian

DO IT TO IT! Let us know if it works. It should run, theoreticly speaking. Just make sure it doesnt leak at all. Might want to pull the EA82 carb off, maybe install new gaskets, and use new gaskets when you mount it to the block. You can get a sheet of gasket paper for like $3. Take pix, and let us know if it works. -Brian

Ok, just needed to know incase i hooked it up and got like 2lb's, i would know something was wrong. -Brian -
Yeah, get pix. never seen 14" 8 spoke alloys. Are they from the 505 and the 405? If not, they prolly wont fit a subaru. Also, make sure they arent Pug Hub caps Ive seen plenty of different Pug hubcaps that look like real rims. -Brian

Full Time 4WD 5spd. Thanks for the explination Adam. Should I tap the gauge into the intake manifold to be on the safe side??? -Brian -
Well still, say for instance i had a problem with you Caleb. The last thing I would want you to do is going around the board telling people "Brian screwed me over". I'd want you to work it out with me off-board, unless I was so irrational it had to come to this. Of course, the rest of the board has a right to know. And if the USMB member Cole mentioned was selling this car, I wouldn't have edited it. But there was no point in advising everyone in this thread about what happend in the past with Cole and a previous board member. Cole does have a valid point tho. If your going to negotiate with somebody over the internet, its safe to put down a deposit to secure your purchase, or else he could just sell it from under you and you'd be stuck with a loan. -Brian P.S. I didn't censor anything, just edited the name used.

EA82T Whatsthisdo?? (pix)
TheSubaruJunkie replied to TheSubaruJunkie's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
So in theory, since my guage is a vacuum/pressure gauge, it should reflect the vacuum until the turbo boosts and creates pressure... correct? What does a bone stock EA82T produce for boost? -Brian
