True. Everyone would love to have a EJ22 in their brat. But reasonably thinking, its not as easy as bolting together a EA81 and slapping it in there. And I still think 140hp with a tiny Subaru brat would FLY! Expecially a N/A EA81 where all your power is right where you want it. Drag racing=no Dirt rally=yes -Brian

Oh Yeah, MrGuyver... im sure he's done it. Not sure what the difference between EA81 and EA82 but im sure the EA81 will be alot better than the EA71. Maybe try to get the suspension from a 2WD EA81 Sedan or Wagon. I think the suspension is softer and alittle lower profile than the 4WD. -Brian

Ive never heard of anyone using EA82 suspension on a EA81. At least the front, i know the rear would work with the rear struts, but without a lift kit it messes up a bunch of stuff. -Brian

Only people I know of live in Australia. There are a couple people in the US who has done a EA82 swap, but ive never heard of one of us doing a EA82T swap? -Brian -

Uhm... I was talking to a guy who fab's cams for aircraft use. He told me he can make a cam, and doubled with a weber and tuned right would make 130hp. Im not sure if youve ever seen a gen1 brat. But they are tiny. And very light. if you tore everything out of it and lightened it even more, and stuck a 100hp EA81 in it, you would rip the doors off of everyone else. 130hp would be even more scary. Coupled with a Full Time 4WD 5spd, and you would be almost unstoppable. -Brian

hahaha GL10... offroad??? One of you guys has to lift your subes soon so i have someone to wheel with. -Brian -
I might be willing to get one as well. Was thinking of putting my tailgate on eBay and make some money, would like to have something nice to replace it with. -Brian

Ive had CV's on the bearings so tight, the bearing actually came out with the CV. That sucks, cause after that happens, you need to replace the bearings. That was only once, every other CV ive done they were simple to get out. And I cant even count how many ive done. Tim, how much did those new axles run you? -Brian

Wont fit. The OHC makes the EA82 wider than the EA81. You'd have to modify the frame rails to get it to fit, and you would have to wire everything and run new fuel lines. Stay simple. Lighten the car, put a EA81 in it with a weber and aftermarket cam. Get 130hp from that engine and your brat will FLLLLLY!!! -Brian

Check to see if the top bolts for the struts are the same as generic EA81 Subaru's. Also check to see if the lower ball joint is the same as well. If so, you could most likely take the EA81 Suspension from any EA81 with the steering knuckle, brakes and all... and bolt them up. Not sure if its been done before, but let us know if your successful. The EA81 will fit, 5spd, not too sure. -Brian

electrical issues on my 81 hatch
TheSubaruJunkie replied to harpua's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
This might sound stupid, but did you check to see if the headlights are burnt out? Do the high beams come on? The oil pressure gauge is not much to worry about, i wouldn't be suprised if it didnt work from the factory. Does the tach stick at 4000rpm? Alot of sube's do that at old age. -Brian -
New hatch owner, have a couple questions......
TheSubaruJunkie replied to SC1's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Yeah, if that tranny is a 4WD 5spd, it didnt come from a 1983. They still only had 4speeds up until 1985 when they came out with EA82's and 4WD 5speed -Brian -

Just remember to disable it when you need to check the oil. -Brian -
A new use for a roof rack
TheSubaruJunkie replied to soobme's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
DAMN!!! Well, now you can get another EA82 hood and put a scoop in it. Put rubber bump stops on the roof rack tho, so it doesnt trash your hood -Brian -
I dont know. I'm pretty good with photoshop, and i cant find anything that indicates thats a fabbed photo. What makes you guys think its shopped?? -Brian

Yes, if you have parts... you'll make it a long way in a short time on the USMB. I am in need of rear jump seats. and some interior pieces. there are a few members in CT (moosens and clantieri ring a bell) and im sure you can find someone to do some painting and body work fairly fast. Welcome to the club. -Brian

Good Wheelin Weekend!!
TheSubaruJunkie replied to Adam N.D.J.'s topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Southern Oregon looks like a GREAT place to hold a subaru meet. While we were wheeling, we came out to an open field that would be perfect for about 12 to 25 subaru's: This field is probably twice the size shown. There are 4 trails that I noticed heading in, and leaving this area. Only problem is giving people directions -Brian -

Yeah some new tires would help alot. Maybe a welded front end as well. After hearing the stories from your friends about the mud-runs and hill climbs... i DEFINATLY want to join in on the fun. Next time, i'll have a diff that is properly welded. -Brian
