  1. Heya all! I just bought a '78 brat, and it is rumored to have a JDM motor with 60k miles ... I just was curious what to look for to see if it is indeed a JDM ... the original owners are now deceased, so I can't ask them (kinda weird .. have ot take their death certificates into the treasurer's office ) but anyhow, I am going to try cleaning the block up some, was just curious what to look for thx!
  2. :slobber: MAN!!!! that's one NICE '78!! (admit it ... you just love having a reason to post that pic ... I would! he he) what kinda topper/cover is on it? Honestly, I dunno what they are worth ... what ever the going price is would be fine with me ... won't shipping be a killer tho since your in NY? I have some more pics of it for ya too ... it needs cleaning up, but it's straight If I didn't sell it I would just add a plate to the middle of it once I lifted it ... here's some pics of the bar ...
  3. Kewl! I will have to see if I can find some pics of graphics like that and have them made ... or maybe I will just make some stencils and then paint them and if they get scratched off, I can just spray them on again
  4. Rust happens, but not too bad ... I got pics on the "gen 2 brat towing gen 1 brat" post ... I do have a nice set of jump seats and I WAS going to sell them to a local guy, but looks like I might be hanging onto them after all this brat has a set of decient ones that I might sell instead, (they aren't bad just not near mint like my good ones) I'm gonna put the roll bar into my Gen 2 and if anyone is interested in the front brush guard, lemme know ... I will lift this one since it has enough rust in the rear fenders that it needs work anyway, but it's interesting ... it's said to have a JDM 1600 with 60k miles ... clock on the brat is 33k, I'm sure that's 130 or 230 or something .. but I will be the second person to have it titled (the guy I got it from never got around to titling it ... he's too busy to mess with it) the original owner passed away reciently and had it on the road as reciently as 2003 ... it has carb probs but I can fix that ... I will have to get a good EA-81 and 5spd D/R for it so I will be selling the engine/trans if anyone wants them ... they seam to be fine ... he had it running and driving about a week or 2 ago but even with a freash re-build, the carb won't let it go over like 20 mph ... I can do a comp test if anyone is serious ... I will be giving away the wheels and if the subaru wheel covers are colectors, lemme know I will send them free (just ask you pay shipping) otherwise my friend wants to put them on his EA82 I can take pics of them too if anyone wants to see them
  5. Kewl! that would be a nice pic to post Well, I made it back just fine, at one point tho the nylon tow strap broke! About 1 mile from home and on a hill my friend behind me gave a TRU test to the brakes But I just tied the strap back together and went on home good thing it didn't break when I really needed it ... so now gonna go get 100' of that 10,000 lb rope (it might have been cut a bit by the tire that it was wrapped around for a cushion) but we got it home Yay! pics below
  6. Well, I'm off to puck-up my '78, and since no one said "NO!! YOU'LL TOAST THE TRANNY!! !!" I guess I will just take it easy and maybe I will put my extra battery in it to opperate the 4-ways (if they work ) and a "IN-TOW" sign ... well wish me luck! I think it also has some decient hub-caps that I might be giving away with some wheels so I will make pics as soon as I get back
  7. Yeah, "Brat" isn't really a BAD name, just not a tough sounding name (IMO) ... and it lends to things like "Oh! what a CUTE lil brat youy have ..." (that is untill you take the SAME parking space as their Honda Civic) "Oh, sorry I didn't see it there...."
  8. OHHHHHhhhhhhhh - YEEEEAAAaaaaaaaaahhhhh I gotta Digi with me to take pics and see if anyone thinks the rust (cancer) is terminal or not ... it's pretty bad especially in the bed, but this is a Montana car and it was given to the current second owner, apparently the original owner reciently passed away ... some interesting features: 1600 JDM motor (how do I confirm this looking at it?) possibly with just around 60k miles ... the brat's showing 33k on the clock, but I doubt it's not at least 133k or 233k ... orig owner bought it new and it has the front long push bar and a bunch of wheels in the back ... the current guy thought he had a 1800 and bought new disty, wires etc, etc (I'm gonna snag these for Stompr1 ... that's my Gen 2 ) for a 1.8 ... it does run but it has serious carb problems (Duh!! it has the Hi-tossy carb :-p ) and will only go 20 mph if the rust is fixable, I might try to lift it and transplant a EA81 & D/R 5 speed and sell it ... mainly concerned that the rear strut towers are rusted out If it is too rusty gonna definatly part it out ... looks like there is some demand for a 1600 JDM ... just wana make sure that is what it is
  9. I just found a pretty good deal on a '78 brat ... but now I need to go get it home :-p I have access to a Ford Exploder to do the job, but I think it would be fun to use my brat if it's not going to hurt anything ... I can take the back - roads and go no faster than about 35 - 40 if I have too, and I have a custom bumper on the rear that is really solidly attached to the normal bumper tunnels and the car tie-down loops, just wana make sure this isn't going to be damaging ... + all my tools are in the brat already ... any input appriciated thx!
  10. that's TOO funny!! I think that "brumby" sounds alot tougher ... I mean, when I think of "brat" I imagine a whinney little kid that is throwing a fit ... and doesn't "brumby" mean a wild horse?
  11. I might be able to rescue a '78 brat, just not sure if it is just a parts car or too rusty to bother yet ... should have pics tomarrow ... but anyhow, the price should be right ... more details tomarrow
  12. hmmm what about the OTHER side with the 4 foot long tear in the side!? (damn I wish I could photo-shop that hehe) sounds like a great deal! gratz!
  13. Kewl! any Pics? I might make some or have them made by a local sign shop if I can get a good example
  14. Here's where I got mine on sale 14" (blems) for $45 ea http://www.intercotire.com/site33.php I'm sure you can also find a local tire shop to order them (that was you might get them to give you a road hazard warrenty, etc.)
  15. I just LOVE my brat I was just getting done doing some plumbing at the church building yesterday and Eric, a guy from New Zealand that is going to the local University (and our "college" study group) happened to be there and saw me putting back my tools in the brat and asked "Hey .. is that your Brumby? Some guys just came here to take pictures of it!" He's a kewl guy ... he tells people (because of his accent) "I don't come with sub-titles, so sorry if you have a hard time understanding me .." :-p Well, anyway, it was neat having my Brat called a Brumby  I wonder how hard it would be to get some "Brumby" vinyl graphics for my car ... that would really make people here in the states curious
  16. Wheel bearings are the first thing I would suspect ... is there any wobble or slop in the wheel when you have it off the ground? Next I would check the ball-joints and steering knuckle ... does this happen just on one side and when turning one particular direction? Hope this helps ... if you can't find anything wrong I would take it to a good alignment guy ... gl
  17. I'm curious about RallyJusty's EJ18 justy ... I can imagine it should quite a bit better than it looks at first glance
  18. dang ... looks like my brat would only qualify for the easyest trails ... too bad my LSD wouldn't qualify as a rear locker ... gonna have to fix that ... and while I'm at it might as well get a locker for the front too ...
  19. If there is a Pilgrimage for the Subaru "Holy Lands", Missoula Montana has to be on the list of holy sites! I believe Subaru is still the #1 seller of cars in the state, and even if Missoula it isn't the holiest Subie site, I am sure that our cult following has to be in the top ten Heck, I got $1500 for my '88 JUSTY ... sold in less than a week ... and I get nothing but smiles or just long stares everywhere I go in the lifted brat ... that's why I want to start lifting and selling some here Ya'know, I have had more than one offer to buy my brat off me ... I never let them get to the actual dollar amount tho since I don't wana be tempted :-p Now if I can just get enough people around here to lift their Subes maybe I can start a club or something And yes I have been asked Q's at stores and mostly gas stations ... it is nice
  20. PICS!! I wana see ole' Leroy looks like the site you had him on isn't up anymore ... maybe you can post some here? Also ... I just realized, the FIRST lifted Sube I saw in person (possibly the first ever seen at all) was a Justy! There is this really eccentric self-taught car genious (read mad scientist ) mechanic in Stevensville near where I live ... I passed his shop and had to turn around and ask him about HIS justy with the 15" wheels and mud tires in the front ... I was still driving my Justy at the time. He was kinda scary the way he had some of it put together, but it was pretty amazing what it looked capible to do ... he was so glad to have someone appriciate his work that he even let me take it for a spin in the vacant lot next door LOL!! Last time he was working on it he was going to fill all the body pannels and such so that it could float accross a lake ... now THAT is a pic I would love to see!! He's from the old school "seat of the pants" kinda mechanic, and he has done alot of trial and error but he has come up with some neat stuff ... I need to go by there with my brat ... he was going to show me some way to tune the timming to get more power ... hmmmm
  21. I think I have the answer to your Q ... Fuji Heavy Industries (I know I'm smart but no not really an rump roast ... most of the time )... but I doubt they ever concieved of the amazing things we do with them ... who knows, maybe I am wrong and there is a mud pit near the factory where all the mechanics play with their old lifted Ru's :-p
  22. Well, if I can find an easy way to lift and shoe one, I will buy annother ... but for now I can't afford both so I got a brat :-p
  23. I gotta agree with hatchsub ... also, remember that any time you use a spacer or even just a larger off-set wheel you run the risk of destroying wheel bearings ... I was told that 1/2" was the max I should ever go with spacers, and then my local metal fab guy talked me into just 3/8" ... I now have a different off-set wheels (converted to 6 lug) but many have used the off-set with the same tires I have now with good results ... so just be carefull ... if you go too far you will have more trouble than you bargined for ... just my two cents ...
  24. :slobber: *me can't WAIT to goto the JY and look for some seats* I wonder if there are any that are close enought that you don't have to do more than drill some extra holes? .. or maybe the bracket from the brat seats can be tranfered to the other? or will that always req welding ... I haven't even seen how the brackets are mounted ... I'm guessing they are welded to the frame of the seats?
  25. welcome! your very lucky to have that model of brat still available to you ... last time they made them in the US was 1987 ... I have a '85 brat but it has a 1.8 ... what is the stamp on your engine? it should say EA71 if it is the 1.6 and EA81 if it is the 1.8 ... the stamp should be located on the front of the engine on the left side just below the air filter ... and yes I would also LOVE to see some pics!
