The journey has come to an end...
Steptoe replied to Checkerboard Comet's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Oh.....think we have lost you now -
Just wondering which way up the EJ shift stay rubberised mount goes onto the underside of the trans tunnel I have cut both shifter and stay rod down to fit the EA81 and painted her up hammertone silver so it looks a little different I forgot to take note which way up for the mount though I think the slant as it mated to Impreza GF8 body could give a clue just cut the body up and disposed of it And I am above it not under for this ask task So is it meant to be metal plate up or see rubber block up? One way or another may be best for clearing tailshafts and that may dictate orientation anyway At this stage not sure if EA82 manual tailshafts works or the Impreza gets 50-52 mm cut out of it

We have many who run EJ engines with an adaptor plate to mate the EA82 gearboxes . Never heard of a self shifter being used now that I think about it. If you can get a dual range box you need to get its matching console inside to cater for the 4wd hi lo lever and do away with solenoid selection of single range You came across it or you bought it? -
1982 fuel pump control unit
Steptoe replied to glf subie's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I have seen figures of mid two hundred dollars if still available new Many seem to find used for replacement I threw one out! What can be wired in is an electrical safety cut out unit as used for same purpose in propane fuelled conversions, only to shut off a relay for gas pressure safety solenoid. They are mostly four wires Earth IGN Coil signal , forget if pos or neg, think neg Wire out carries 12v pos to power up pump or pump relay -
EA82 coolant hose carby to thermostat rusted nipple
Steptoe replied to subieroo's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I have replaced with brass and likely posted pics in here under username Jono I used the 1/8" taper brass bits in 28 tpi starting at the block. Also used a 45° elbow so it gave path a downward dog clearing my mpfi intake, then maybe a shorted barbed nipple. I think may have been three short pieces at the block end I think the importance of this is as an air bleed as there isn't much volume carried through. I think it worked, may be on an engine yet to be installed -

What steering coupler for EA81 / 82 PS Conversion?
Steptoe replied to Ritchie's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Yes, some details on what mix of components you have got, and how far you are into this might help both ways. The rack ends as in the inner tie rods of EA81 manual steer are female from memory. Same memory if EA82 is of power steering only and their rack end tie rods/ inner tie rods are male Probably done so no one on assembly line can put EA82 stuff on an EA81 as they go by Is this difference across both manual and OS in both generations to prevent crossbreeding? I think so So can't mix EA81 inner tie rods to EA82 power steer rack as you'd get two females trying to couple () () Trying to fit EA82 inner tie rods to an EA81 rack would be the opposite :--- ----: , a join nut could work here So maybe a short threaded stud to couple them together Or does the whole EA82 rack ends manage to get cut down to fit EA81 body? Another option , someone running EA82 CV shafts n stuff? Can you take pics of what your steering shaft looks like with measures say from centre to centre of clamp bolts? -
Low budget suggestions years ago was to try a Y pipe from an EA82 on EA81 I did I don't know if the pipe is any larger diameter, though this claimed. Factory carby EA82 Y pipe is double skinned

Tell him he will gain a few extra horsies if he did same to his WRX, But has to be in titanium ( guffaw, guffaw, guffaw) When the flap in the snout if the air filter housing snorkel us working as intended, it has a flap that forces the snout entry closed upstairs, so it has to pull exhaust heated air via a flexible convoluted foil tube that should be between your mystery powerful grade and underside of air filter housing snorkel Should be a not fully sealed join at exhaust header to allow fresh air entry. Not sure if the flap fully closed off upper engine bay air or gradual blend, but suspect it as on or off affair To answer your question on pipe size increase If you are handy enough and can build your own and like the exhaust note of an EJ turbo you could do what people call unequal length or UEL. Funny though, if you measure the original pipes length, they are not equal to start with !! The uel follows the path of turbo pipes by left bank bend turning towards front, skip across below oil filter and pump before either T in below RHS port or a pipe from each side doing a two into one further back I have heard an EA81 with slightly bigger engine pipe in turbo path, straight through where rear diff was and out An EJ WRX owner declared " that is no pushrod engine under the bonnet" He was wrong and it sounded like an early EJ20 turbo Willyfisterbottom of the gen1 forum owns the ute with this system Yep, go too big in pipe diameter off heads you will lose low end torque measurable in seat if your pants

You likely need everything except the shell for the conversion including LHD brake master cylinder and at least some photos of a RHD brake line set up from the master Wiring loom

Subaru L series ignition coils
Steptoe replied to 3crows's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
photos have become easier with more modern devices But if you hit that little warning of overload you have hit the limit in here. I did as well, so went from Jono to Steptoe and resolved all my photographic contribution problems from this Lenovo tablet Maybe you could sign up new member 4crows On the ND in fwd only ...offer, not in Oz ...we got them in 4WD wagons from about 88 to 94 I think they stopped the L Series One of my GLTAs came with. Ford six coil by Bosch in it -

Hoses for EJ into EA81 and radiator
Steptoe replied to Steptoe's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Oh that sort of double size hose in Oz will be handy You pics will be appreciated, meanwhile I had better cruise Mackay's hose catalogue I like two electric fans on all my Subies. My current daily is Brumby with a fan mounted front side, RHS of car. Took a lot of work to make it fit in. Just an old freebie from an Astra . German made Bosch from memory. The idea of fans in front frees up radiator space and removal with, well only one fan between engine and radiator -

Nice work. I just cannot picture where these would go, despite your photo. From someone who has achieved this, what first step would you suggest for me to learn this from scratch? -
Subaru L series ignition coils
Steptoe replied to 3crows's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Do you have coil specs at hand? If not, scream out, someone must be able to put them up I think you might find specs will be the same no matter which year or coil, but I understand your caution as my 85,86 turbo Hitachi uses different spec from the two pin module coil. As a matter of interest have you a link to the ND $100 module? -
Every BRAT owner needs one..

Maybe so, but the EJ needs to come with a bloody good installation instruction sheet . -

Hoses for EJ into EA81 and radiator
Steptoe replied to Steptoe's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Hmmmm...I probably will forget. That adaptor from the studios of Steptoe is actually a project on hold. It has a 5/8" hose barb for lower hose of EA, with long hose to a remote fill coolant reservoir out of an Astra .... and that is where it stopped when I found standard Brumby radiator on the EA82 is excellent, far superior to EA82 single core -
Hoses for EJ into EA81 and radiator
Steptoe replied to Steptoe's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
While musing on this topic, BRZ /86 radiator us out of budget The dimensions for 2012 model are 650. 350.42 700.390.42 are the outside measures of the alloy unit made for EA81 Assuming radiator hoses are ~ 39 mm ID -
18 ft/lbs is stuck I head for the early turbo EA82 I cannot find it in this early FSM but found notes later recorded as 18-24? If anyone has early FSM and knows where it is ??? Just to prove to (pedant) self . Apologies if I have other pedants off on a mission Found XT FSM1987 it is in section 2-3 p16 It is the single pin green unit listed as 16-20 ft/lbs Lucky I set my white two pin old thing at 18 , better than the finger tight setting I left it at a year ago !!

Hoses for EJ into EA81 and radiator
Steptoe replied to Steptoe's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
It is called pattern making I believe. You take a long time making a custom top and bottom hose from paper, then cardboard , then metal then add a joiner each end to give some flex. Show us yer hoses post coming up Those adapters are $7 posted so think Tambox will be getting a surprise in the mail direct from eBay -
Hoses for EJ into EA81 and radiator
Steptoe replied to Steptoe's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I may have even suggested this following idea before somewhere ....it is an adaptor to allow for an inline sensor to be screwed into the 1/8" tapered hole in the side - eBay of course. I got them for emergency hose repair This is 30 mm size. 30 is max diameter at the rib not where hose clamp goes it is about 28 mm If I can entice a friend to turn it's odd hex shape down to 38.7 mm then cut in half - got 2 somethings to play with The crude cast inside diameter of my EJ20 outlet for top hose is about 31 mm
