Just bought 87 Subaru RX
Turbone replied to wingspan99's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Welcome to the USMB, and to the frustrating and sometimes rewarding world of the Subaru RX I run Premium in mine, but only because of the mods. Normally in stock form, you can run Regular. If you have a real low octane where your at, and you're running regular right now, this may be why you're hearing the ticking. But not being able to hear the sound in person, its hard to tell. The 88 owners manual will work fine, all RX coupes are the same. The oil leaks are common. Most likely from the front crank seal and front cam seals. Its a straight forward job. Do you know if the timing belts have been replaced? Normally they need replacing before 60K, but I have heard (in rare cases) of them going further. The engine is a non-interference engine, so if they do break, no harm will be done. But I always keep a spare set in the back. Seeing how you're in AZ, I would go thru the entire cooling system. Check/replace all the hoses that are dried out or cracked/weak. Check the radiator, if it looks like theres any junk floating around, flush and keep a eye on the temps. This is the major common problem with this engine. Its very sensitive to heat. The most common result is head gasket failure. For more info, search for threads/posts under my S/N or go to the retrofit forum. And pay no heed to GD :-p -

I hope to get it on a dyno before WCSS11. Butt dyno tells me 130whp. I had 100 before the turbo upgrade. And its a CCR block with less than 20K on it now. I would have to drop alot more $ into it to get more and thats not going to happen. I know when its time to quit. But I would love to get another one and do a full EJ swap like Russ is doing. -

I've been running 12lbs of boost for a year now, with no EMS. Stock injectors. Stock fuel pump. TD04 and TMIC. It runs cool as a ice maker when the fans are hooked up. -
New BRAT seats... can you guess from what?
Turbone replied to Ever Victorious's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Lol Yeah, I know the back lever is for the seat back tilt. I looked underneath and all, moving the lever around. Still couldnt figure it out, nothing was moving. I'm in the process of cutting/drilling the rails off now, because they arent bolted to the seat frame. Stupid pop rivets and spot welds. Its turning out to be quite a job :-\ And this is the just passenger seat -
If your thinking of throwing your money away, I could put it to better use

Thanks for the info, its nice to be reminded of what was going on back then. But also, the cars in any Rally are never stock. They have all kinds of engine/drivetrain/suspension mods, which enable them to fly thru the air at 130mph Does anyone know how many years they used the EA82T in the Factory Rally cars? -

He usually makes us all envious by posting pics of his awesome camp setup -
I'm a little surprised at how much the wheels on a car will get peoples attention. Before I had my gold ADR's on I would get the occasional glance or wave from another subie owner. Now I get looks from lots of people. They really set the car off. I even had some guy in a lowered Honda sitting at a light give me a nod when I drove by :-p

Its pretty normal for the oil pressure to read zero at idle. Its even mentioned in the owners manual. Good job, Niku -

Ok, seeing how I was in a PAP today I took a look at some of the Mazda Protege's they had in the yard. They all looked ok, but I continued on. In the last row of imports there was a Mazda MX3. The seats were in ok condition, dirty and the drivers bolster had a couple holes in it. But my RX seat is worse. So I grabbed them, got em both for $35. Theres all kinds of adjustments for the drivers seat. Seat height in the front. Side bolsters move in and out. Lower lumbar support. And a lever on the side I have no clue what it does yet. I'll get some nice seat covers for them after they are cleaned. But I need to figure out how to get EA82 rails on them first. -
You find all kinds of wierd things in used cars. On the end of the hose is a magnet, found it in my Brat a few years ago. I was told its for cows. Sometimes they ingest metal out in the fields and the best way to get it out is to have them swallow a magnet. It all comes out the other end. So, what happened to you, happened to me once. I had a rare stroke of genius and made this. It works like a charm. If I can find the other magnets, I can ship you one. You may want to try and go thru where the starter mounts up, its a bigger hole.

You go thru the starter hole. Just dont drop your socket down into the bellhousing (ask me how I know!)

You do know what I'm going to do if you grenade that engine And you arent the only one with lots of experience with EA82's. I've also done my share. Some people dont have the time and money to do a tear down and replace a crap load of parts. The oil pump is the #1 contributor to TOD, the rest get replaced if the problem persists. Most of these parts were replaced on Niku-Sama's engine. It just needs a new oil pump re-seal imo. -

Best info yet, thanks Frank. Personally, I wouldnt try the stint....yet. Oil pump reseals are like changing your t-stat, it needs to be done on a schedule. Alot of EA82 folks change them when they do T-Belts, which is every 60K (preferably before 60K) You may not even own the car that long, who knows? GD, I would appreciate it if you stayed out of ANY EA82T thread for now on. If you're nice, I might give you a ride in my RX come Aug at the Show;) We'll see if your EJ22T has the Tq mine does. And I should have numbers on paper by then too. -

Its not the codes he is having problems reading, he wanted to know how to use the unit. And codes for New Gens are totally different than Old Gen. The readers to not cross-reference.
