OK, Im sold! Subie rules the snow

Recommended Posts

Well, ya'll. Ive gotton my 96 Legacy OB back together, in no small part to all the advice I found here. Last night, one of my co-workers installed the new rear struts, the last piece of the puzzle before I put the girl on the road. Today, we get hit with the biggest snowstorm of the year, in fact, the most snowfall in one storm, in many years! I have close to 4 FEET of snow here from this storm and its still snowing...We left work at noon because things were getting real nasty, roads were closing, blizzard warnings posted. Borrowed a dealer plate, left the old faithful Sentra at work, and drove the Subie home. Her maiden voyage with me, other than a few short rides around work, and in the biggest f**in storm you can imagine! I made it home, into my unplowed drive...and planned to stay and ride out the rest of the storm. But my friends were stranded.....couldnt make the hill on their road, and it would be a couple mile walk in what really was by then a full fledged blizzard. SUBIE to the rescue! I picked them up, helped push their inferior car into a gas station, and drove them home in the Subie. Visibility: near zero. Snow, on the highway: 7 or 8 inches. Stranded and abandoned cars passed: several. Up the steep and unplowed road to their house....simply amazing. I passed a F-150 4X4 stranded (ok, he got off the side and I lucked out, the visibility was that bad. But I made it, he didnt)

The work and aggravation was all worth it. Im sold. LOL! What a day to try out your 'new' Subie.

I would agree, only if the Subaru has decent tires. I have a 92 Legacy SS and the tires were bad. We had our one significant snow storm of the year last month it did not perform like a true Subie. My wife got stuck on a hill. I have a 05 VW Passat, and sorry to say, it's front wheel drive traction control system kicked the Subie's butt up and down the street.

I have since gotten 4 new tires on the Legacy, but I don't think we Western Washington people will be fortunate enough to drive in the snow again.

On a side note, the ABS worked great (albeit noisy and a little scary sounding).

I just got to play with my 00RS in the snow for the first time, not as much snow as you but alot of ice mixed in. OMG!!!! This car is killer in bad conditions. With the LSD if it gets into trouble, steer out, hit the gas and go! I pulled into my dads driveway and felt it just kind of raise the car as the snow scraped the floor pans. Thought for sure we would be diggin it out, went to leave, dumped the clutch and and it pulled right out.

this was my first winter in a ej series awd roo, and i must say, it was awesome fun. all day i was doing donuts and drifting around. so what if it cost $30 in gas, it was fun. i was getting thumbs up and waves from other subaru people all day as well. got stuck once (high centered) and amazingly, a guy with a legacy GT pushed me out:banana:

This makes all the difference!!!

After the last 2 days of chugging on by as cars and suvs slid all over, I noted which cars to never ever consider buying. Driving conditions like that remind me why I am a die hard Subie fan.

My only negative is that I can't bloody move when the snow is up over my bumper. :-p

Made a trip to my parent's house and back last night during some lake effect nastiness in the I-94 corridor next to Lake Michgan, east side. My 94 Sundance performed admirably for only having two wheels pulling, but I was constantly reminded of how much better my old Subaru could have handled the mess. I remember driving through the UP in one nasty Nor'easter and my 91 Legacy never skipped a beat, just kept right on chugging. Such a good car, oh WHY did I have to throw her to the wolves of the scrapyard?!? I MISS MY BABY!!!! :banghead::(

I was doing fine yesterday in the 95 legacy wagon, got to work, no problem. Coming home, I got hung up on an ice patch on an incline at an intersection--couldn't get backed up to try another run because of all the traffic! What these people were doing out in this stuff at 6:30 PM I don't know--if I hadn't been called out, I wouldn't have left the house.

I love it when they have a check point on the interstate because the upcoming pass has several inches of snow stuck to the roadway (I-5 northern cali) and the officier doesn't say anything to you except "Nice Subaru, drive safe."(98 legacy gt) and you proceed through the pass at 40mph drifting around the noobs going 15mph with their "one-wheeled wonder" and snow chains. Not to mention the trucks... weee haaa:headbang:

ok i simply must concur with everything ive read here today. we got maybe a foot of snow and ice and the removal around here is pathetic. i mean seriously, they may plow the main roads but they blame budget cuts for not being as diligent as they once were...anyways, im out cruising around in my 05 xt obw and im doing just fine (in case you havent heard by now, soobs are good in the snow lol) and i come around the bend and theres this lil old lady (no way could i write it better than this) and shes got her buick regal stuck on an ice mound which to her must have looked like mt everest, so i stop and shes crying on the phone to her husband, triple a is gonna take 3 hours ot get her and shes in the middle of BFE so shed have been lucky anyone found her...so we talk and i ask her if shes got a tow rope or some chain (of course she doesnt but i have to ask) i thought i had a 20000 lb tow strap in the back somewhere and i looked and didnt find it at first. then i popped off the lil rear side panel (where the stealthed subwoofer is gonna go) and lo and behold there is the brand new, unused strap. so i lay it out for her...and hook up the one end to her tow hitch and the other to my front end hook and all the meanwhile shes crying to her husband, and i said tell him youll be home in 3o minutes....20 seconds later i pulled her huge car out of the ice, and out of the ditch and shes happy as a pig in slop. she pulls out a wad of money and says take what you want, i just said, no thanks, youre my first snow pullout with this car and have a nice day and drove away. prolly blew her lil ole purple haired mind. my car is awesome in the snow. i will have to snap a pic of the new license plate. then you can all smile knowingly. yeah yeah i got the xt turbo, so what i have to run 91 or better octane in it, i love it and obviously we all love our soobs. thanks for reading, i had to tell someone and figured this was the best way to rave. woohoo!

OBXT + now =

i haven't pulled anyone out with mine yet... although i did managed to get the passenger side sucked into a snow filled ditch the other day (100% the girlfriend's fault, i swear... ).. anyhow, after trying to back out, with little luck, and a whole lot of burnt clutch smell i descided to try forward.. threw it in 1st, dumped the clutch at about 4000rpms, threw some snow EVERYWHERE, and pop, back on the road

back around '96 or so we got HAMMERED with snow like we did the past couple days. I remember my parents pushing me into selling my justy (it's a death trap p.o.s. blah blah) and they got me a *gag* escort because it was bigger and they felt it was cheaper to repair (that's a whole other nightmare that drove me right back to subaru) anyway, my escort was stuck in our flat but 12"+ snow driveway. Couldn't move it, couldn't rock it, it was like a lump of crap. My dad's taurus wouldn't budge. The two cars sat there like a poor man's Ford reseller. bleh.

I fired up my Justy that had sat idle in our squishy muddy yard for 4+ months, 3 of which were cold and generally crappy. It started right up, despite being almost up to the bumper in snow and partially sunken into the muck, I threw it into gear and it trundled forward like it was any other normal day.

Needless to say, I put the for sale sign on that craptacular racecourt and sold my Justy as well, but only to put the $ into the 97 Legacy I still drive today.

It's stuff like that that makes me a diehard soobie fan

AAH, that is a story I know all too well...

When the parents' 3/4-ton Cummins and the Sentra couldn't budge...

I crawled into the Sube and fired her up. And after she blasted through the drift in front of her, I plowed around the woods like it was goin' out of style. Just so no one can argue with the awesome-ness of my Subaru.

I've got a good story for ya. It's why I'm so darn hooked on this 91 legacy wagon. I bought the thing from a guy leaving town (clean title!) for $250. I didn't expect miracles. Not the first one. The motor knocks when it's cold but it needs the "kitchen sink" if you know what that is ;). It's AWD with 275k on the ODO. It's dented. It's rusty. The locks don't completely work. The back hatch is stuck closed. The front fenders have rusted away behind the tires. The passenger headgasket leaks a bit. This thing is old, worn, and in need of some love. But damn, everything I did to tune her up, it's like she was back from the dead and crawling into the ring for another few rounds. It's no WRX. That's not why I bought it. I bought it because it refuses to die.

New plugs, o2 sensor, 20% ethanol fuel, and an oil change brought this car back to life. It needs some more TLC but the car has done things with 4 studded snow tires that some yuppies in SUV's proved that they couldn't do. I think the only difference IS the tires. 4 wheel drive and studded tires made this thing into a tank. The same tires on my RS, even though it was lowered, made endless snow/ice drifts a paradise of vehicular control. Icy ruts are what suck. They have no sidebite like a real m+s tire.

You know why this looks tough as hell? Because it is :headbang: . I want a small nimble 4x4 with adequate ground clearance, good suspension, and good tires. A lifted scoob is just perfect for me.

One side note on tires. Mom bought these Kumho mud/snow tires that just rule! They're knarly as hell and claw through anything but they're quiet on the road. The treadblock wraps around the edge of the tire. The 29in tires I put on this thing will definitely have that feature. I look forward to having a Subaru Legacy wagon as a mini-truck for my household.

These JC sports turbopipes sitting here will fit this chassis, too....

Oh, and it likes ethanol too.

Just some FYI ;).

Zapars OBS deserves another look-ha  Please PM me your lift setup. Anyways, glad to hear that the East has finally received it's storm. Colorado's Christmas and New Year's storms were proof positive that AWD in a ~3200 lb package is ideal. I ride the bike mostly in the warmer months but come winter, I want what no other car I've seen has. If you visit our mountain towns you'll notice that 1 in 4 cars seem to be Subarus. There are a lot of crossovers out there now with AWD and some may not be that bad but for now, I'm sold on FHI as well.

With bald tires, Soobs do just fine. With the right tires. . . LOOK OUT snow, you don't stand a chance.

Thanks Andy, but why? I don't run into stuff, I know where it fits. That and if I want to do wheeling that requires a bumper, the Toyota comes out. :) It's got a proper ARB on the front.

After surviving the double blizzard that hit Denver over the holidays in my '91 Lego AWD wagon, I may never own another brand of vehicle as long as I live. The Germans want almost twice as much money as the top level Outback LL Bean. Any future vehicle will have AWD, no exceptions. Subaru has the superior engineering approach (low center of gravity boxer engine, symmetrical powertrain) and the Japanese are world famous for their uncomprimising dedication to quality. Abandon your Suddenly Upsidedown Vehicle America! 21MPG in the city and laugh as you drive over black ice!

Ya, they didn't make these cars to have DVD players, or GPS, or other special features(those would have been nice but oh well, i know about the tribeca though), all they wanted to make were reliable cars, that were well balanced, and have a strong simple yet effective AWD system :)
