Removing Door Ding Strips
carfreak85 replied to carfreak85's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I was planning on welding the holes. Has anyone done this to their cars and have pics? To answer your wagon question, there were never standard wagons ever produced by the factory. -
ea81 turbo brat vs ea81 non turbo brat
carfreak85 replied to nevbrat's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Dude, what are you talking about? Both of my EA81Ts came factory with an oil cooler. Unless you've seen one or own one, don't make the assumption about the older cars. -

Been there, done that (At greater than 30mph). No problems to report so far on a 4 speed or a 5 speed... -
Has anyone done this to their EA81s or have pictures of it? I'm mostly interested in pics and what people did to fill in the holes in the doors?

Its the carb'd cars that have trouble turning bigger rubber. Our turbo cars have about 30lb/ft more torque then they do, which helps. Prob wont need low range unless you're actually offroad. Yes. -

Sorry, buy I've done the swap and you DO need to grab a 3.900 diff. The stock auto has a ratio of 3.700. Stock axles are fine, EA82 2pc driveshaft or a lengthened EA81 piece. PM Bratsrus1 and ask him about his 5 speed conversion kit. -

Like Turbone said, GET THAT Y PIPE COVERED!!! Otherwise, those are exactly what I want on my wagon. How thick and what type of AL did you use? -

Just ask for the rubber coupler for your steering shaft. They can figure out what part you need in the end. -
"Desert Fox" Edition Hatch Decals???
carfreak85 replied to 75subie's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I'd be interested in a Mtn Grizz set for a wagon or brat. Assuming I can also put it on a hatch. This is all price dependent though. :-\ -
Wow, its so..... small.

What about cutting the strut top mount off an impreza and weld it to the tops of the coupe's? Maybe add some extra material to keep them from deforming under extreme use? I wouldn't trust myself to do it yet, but I plan to and although it sounds like a big mod, it will allow the use of newer, aftermarket parts in an otherwise useless suspension design. I also plan on installing modified control arms using Phizinza's method: http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?t=69643 Or the BattleVersion mod at the bottom of the same thread. This would provide many brake, wheelbearing, steering and suspension part options from XT6 to STi. The rear suspension is adequet, but adding a rear anti-roll bar would be a welcome modification. An Ea82 bar needs minor tweaking and some custom mounts to fit our cars. I plan to re-clock the trailing arms to lower the rear end as well, though stock would be much better for a rally machine. Throw on some rear discs and 200SX rear calipers or go with bolt on XT6 brake parts to start a five lug swap. I think that with some work on the intake and exhaust systems on the EA81T, you can have a decent engine. After that, a larger turbo and new valvetrain parts to take advantage of the higher rpm power the new turbo would provide. Megasquirt 'n' Spark for engine control and maybe see if higher comp pistons can survive on a better constructed engine. Other than that; a cage, welded up sun roof (Like so many turbos had) and some decent seats and harnesses and you'd have a sweet little gravel blaster. Johnnyboy, do you have any high res photos of your car? I love gen 2 hardtops and a gen 1 RX is the sweetest of 'em all!!

All you need to do is remove those four bolts and replace the rubber coupler. Thats about it... -
Anyone else go cross country with an EA81T?
carfreak85 replied to mikeshoup's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I haven't driven cross country, but I have driven to Hood River. Expect about 21 MPG with a 5 speed and a fully loaded car. Overheating was an issure for me becuase I had no 02 sensor, but leaving the heat on keep it out of the red. -

I stashed those there for a future soob lover to find. I love collecting rare alloys, but I'm done with that. Trying to sell my stockpile. -
Dude, that is just a regular EA81T car. Multiport injection and such. I know because I have the turbo, injectors, windshield, axle, digidash and grill hardware off that car. What makes you think it was SPFI?!?

I just installed a CD player in my girlfirend's Forester. While she was driving home the volume required to hear the audio increased, and when she came back for me to look at it, the car refused to start. The starter clicks like its binding. Could this be due to me mis wiring the stereo? Sounds far fetched to me, but any input would help since the car is stranded in my driveway!
-
Its not that hard of a mod, just time consuming. Basically, you just have to cut along the diagnols around the light cover and then trim the backside of the grill to clear the rest of the cover throughout its movement.

Uhhhhh, don't remind me. I've only scratched the surface of that death mud...
