  1. Shouldn't be much at all. Since it didn't extend beyond the area the sticker covers, you don't have to paint whole 1/4 panel. Just take the sticker off, get all the rust out, prime, paint with any paint and re-sticker. I've fixed a bunch like that.
  2. What kind of cat? You will still get a 420 code if you used an aftermarket cat. If that's the case you can try the anti-fouler trick. Buy 2 spark plug anti foulers. Drill the center of the first one out and put them both on the rear O2 sensor. This usually works.
  3. If you had the head gaskets backwards, you would have a massive oil leak from the unsealed oil passage. You probably have a chunk of silicone in the the oil passage to the head or the passage in the head to the cam. It happens.
  4. Do you have a big 4wd truck? If so drag it to flat ground and pull both front axles and the rear driveshaft. If not give up and call a flatbed.
  5. Only 4 teeth off you have a decent chance at no bent valves. I wouldn't mess with trying to put new bearings in the idlers, not worth the time and effort. The dealers stock them. To get the crank pulley off wedge a prybar in the flywheel opening behind the intake manifold.
  6. I have both new and old style tension brackets if need. Several of each actually.
  7. I see this sometimes. A chunk of silicone in the oil passage to the head right at the headgasket. Usually it breaks off from excess silicone on the oil pump. Cam seizes, pulley shatters. I have a single head I can sell really cheap since it's not part of a pair and is kind of useless to me. I'll try to remember to look and see which one I have.
  8. I don't know if anyone on here is going to the WBM this weekend in Mass. If you are look for me. This is what I'm bringing.
  9. They should be there

  10. The only thing you really need to match is axle ratio. Any sensors or switches that are different can be swapped over.
  11. Just a thought, but I wasn't too interested in the rest of the show except for the hondas across the way. If you've seen one audi/saab/bmw/volvo etc. you've seen them all. Everyone could meet somewhere else without the expense and hassle and it would be just as good for me. Well I missed Saturday this year, oh well.
  12. Oh well. I am going to be at the shore in NJ the 20-27. I think I might go to one of the dragstrips while I am there one night, if anyone is interested.
  13. The EJ25 phase 1 dohc has the shims on top of the buckets. The tool pushes the bucket down and lets you take the shim out without removing the cam. The are 2 notches in the bucket that the tool sits in.
  14. If it is the subaru alarm that is a dealer add on, they are very easy to remove. Just follow all the wires from the alarm box under the left side dash to where they were spliced in and disconnect them. There will be 1 wire you will have to splice back together near the steering column for the starter. It's all very obvious when you look it over.
  15. The valves are adjustable. There is a shim over the bucket that you replace with a thinner or thicker one to change the valve clearance. Unless you have the special tool from subaru, you have to take the cams out to change the shims. You can take the cams with the engine in the car. In fact, you have to take the cams out first to pull the head off. What happens sometimes is that as the valve wears into the seat, the valve clearance gets too tight and the valve hangs slightly open and you end up with low compression. You would check the valve clearance to see if this is the case. If it's tight, then this is likely. The proper way to fix this is indeed to pull the heads, do a valve job and reshim all the buckets. A cheap and easy way out that usually works is to just reshim the tight valves. If the valve clearance isn't too tight it may have a valve that is burned or not seating.
  16. Swapping the ecu might work. You'd want to see if they have the same emissions package first. Some of the sensors are different. See if they have the canister under the hood or in the back. If both are the same, its a good sign it will work.
  17. Postal wagons are strange. Somebody correct me if I am wrong but I think the postal wagons may have been built in Japan, not the US like other Legacys. It may well have been an early model and has the 96 style ECU. Another possibilty is that it is losing battery power to the ECU when the key is off and resetting the monitors.
  18. What year is it? If it happens to be 96 it will never go ready. 96 is exempt from OBD2 in PA. Other years you just have to do the drive cycle.
