  1. get a long breaker bar to force down the control arm. OR unbolt the conrol arm, sway bar, ect.. and just let it drop.
  2. I was digging it ......until i saw the Charles Manson pic on the drivers door.
  3. You should post your build blog here. http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewforum.php?f=38 Long live the Sterling
  4. I once did a whole winter with a network of manual strings controlling the heating system, so it can be done.
  5. I see you need this... and this.... These tools can be had for under $30 bucks, your subaru (and the other drivers) will thank you. Happy splicing.
  6. yes the AC pump is always in the way. I think I am going to fab up some alternative way to mount the alternator, and toss the AC pump. I never use the AC, and it hasn't been charged in years. As far as the engine that started this thread, the belts are doing ok, I had to put another distributor in. Its chugging along ok. I might also fab up some belt covers that can be taken off/on with zip ties. maybe cutting the center cover in half so it can be taken on/off without removing the crank pulley. Probably need a separate thread to debate running naked, or covered timing belts. The factory did put them there for a reason, and the bare metal parts definitely get rusty without covers.
  7. Technically this is not in my stable, but I bought this for my girlfriend. I added a 2" lift Kit. , Cabellas Roof Basket, and as set of Nokian snow tires. 2002 LLBean H6 3.0 She likes it, and all the creature comforts are nice. However I'll stick with my old school stuff , In my opinion anything that came after the loyale is just not for me. I'm stuck in my old ways.
  8. I am the owner of the first casting of this kit. Order came quickly after sending payment. Came with a bag of nuts/bolts for mounting. Here is a pic of the 2002 LLBean Outback BEFORE the installation. And here is the Outback AFTER installing the kit. I added a set of Nokian Snow tires. I had to do some grinding of some mounting tabs inside the front strut towers but otherwise a straight bolt on procedure. I also had to install a set of Heri HD subaru axles up front. The original axles could not take the lift. The are performing well, around 2000 miles so far. Overall does well on the backwoods trails/roads as well as cruising at 85mph on the highway. I am very happy with this Kit, and would recommend SJR to anyone thinking of purchasing this kit.
  9. I also have a 79 FE (waiting restoration). Looks like me and you are the only 1979 FE Coupe owners in CT, unless others want to chime in. post up some pics.
  10. Just installed a set of these. The holes for the roll pins left burs inside the inner spline preventing them from sliding on the transmission stubs. Had to spend hours grinding/filing the grooves around the roll pin holes. Turned a 2 hour job into a full day of frustration. Aside from that they seem to be working better than the stock units. The stock axles were not happy with a 2" lift. These axles seem to be working good so far
  11. The fuel pump is under the passenger side rear seat. Turn on the key, If you don't hear a buzzing sound comming from under that seat, then it might be a bad fuel pump.
  12. Update: So I inspected everything on the drivers side. The gear on the oil pump is spinning ok. I went back to my parts stash and replaced the tension pulley, the lower cog wheel, and found a belt with the official SUBARU stamp on it (non-aftermarket). I know I should use new parts, but I'm cheap. So everything is buttoned back up and it is purring like a kitten again. So I have several theories on why I keep snapping drivers side belts: 1. running naked belts. (no plastic covers) rusty pullys/gears cutting into the belt. 2. running crappy aftermarket belts. 3. The spring on the tensioner pulley rubbing on the edge of the belt. I think in my situation I have a combination of all 3. Hopefully this latest fix will get me through the winter.
  13. I replaced both belts at 100,000. with brand new belts. Drivers side broke at 110,000. Replaced drivers side with an older belt I had lying around (unknown age/ mileage) snapped within a few weeks. The teeth on both belts were not stripped, the belts just snapped. Passengers side is fine.
  14. So I have broke 2 timing belts within the last month, both on the drivers side. I have checked the tension pulley and cog wheel, and everything spins freely. I have also checked the cog/pulley surfaces to see if they have rough spots cutting into the belt. The motor has around 110,000. I'm stumped.........any ideas?
  15. http://www.indysworld.com/80s/general/wheels/wheels.html this link is all that is left of this old website.
  16. Have 5, one is registered and in active use. Yes I am a collector. I refuse the hoarder label. I think the hoarder term is biased only for people who collect large objects. For example: if I was a stamp collector, with only 5 stamps, I would barely qualify as a stamp collector.....and I definitely would not be called a "stamp hoarder". Any board member is free to plagiarize my statements, consider them as ammunition for those pesky arguments with the wife over your junk collections.
  17. So just snagged this 1986 GL fwd auto. Bone stock except for the window tinting. a little door damage from a dance with a deer. The last original hubcap is still hanging on. looks like the mudflaps fell off along with the other 3 hub caps. Overall I couldn't be more pleased. It virtually has no rust, something very rare in the northeast. I suspect it migrated north recently from the south. Cant wait to convert it to 4wd.
  18. Have you ruled out the guide pins (especially the lower one) binding up?
  19. Looks like you have done more for the Haiti people then the Clinton Foundation. Very cool story.

  21. OK, we need some more detailed picks of this conversion, Someone put a lot of work into this, it would be a shame to chop it up for parts. If it has a title or a past CT registration slip let me know. I'm very interested in this homebrew brat.....more pics please.
  22. Here is some inspiration for all vintage abandoned metal hunters. Not a subaru, but they are out there. happy hunting. Best to view on a large screen. Enjoy
  23. most likely the fuel pump. I would try a new fuel filter first, then try a new pump.
