  1. I'd probably be up to get one too! I'd want my Brat on Oct. 16th (my b-day)
  2. And yes it takes a little to get in and out of the bearings. Just thread the axle nut back on until flush with end of axle and hit with hammer until you can slowly work it out!
  3. Yeah I don't understand it, I'd much rather just have sand on the roads! The MDOT is pretty much saying that there is no negative effects of the use of calcium chloride! I see the same effects here with the concrete just falling apart and the trees on the side of the road turning brown and dieing! But iof you oil your cars and wash often in the winter it helps a lot! And I highly suggest that with you ettev because of all the recent work you did on your Brat! Make sure you get in all the crackas and holes form the top and bottom!! And wash after every storm!
  4. Yeah Maine uses salt and this wonderful:dead:creation called calcium chloride! It rusts everything! I have seen several cars that are newer than 2002 that are just falling apart! Yes I have used ospho before and it seems to work well, but when you start with a car that has rust, and without completely tearing the car into pieces, you can't get to all the rust than it still doesn't help! The only way that I have found in this circumstance is to use oil. But like I said I primarily use chain and cable lube because of the way it soaks in and spreads! My dream is to get a rust free subaru from out west so that I can start a little more "fresh." I could care less about the running gear I just want a shell!!!! I'm sure that ospho would work well in the way you said if you were starting with something that wasn't too rusty to start with!
  5. Right yeah I know what your saying, but Jeez we are talking about old subarus here I personally will do a lot to keep mine from rusting away! I would hope that others out there would be willing to do some "maintenance" But anyways yeah my undercoating is falling off as well and a lot of has been torn off from dragging its belly through the trails!
  6. My '86 Brat Custom 3-4" lift 5 spd D/R Conversion Rear disc brake conversion SPFI conversion on stock EA81 Custom tube bumper/pushbar recent rear tube bumper 14" Puegot wheels w/26" tires Factory Roll Bar w/ lights mounted on top Power steering made to work with SPFI rear 3.90 LSD XT6 seats
  7. The oil doesn't wear off fast at all! I only apply twice a year and there is still lots of evidence that oil was applied! Like I said before..it soaks into the metal and spreads! But you have to do like I said and put into all holes and cracks and what not!
  8. I did this swap as well and changed the whole dash board and harness as well and I also stole the manual seat belts out of the donor car as well!
  9. Yeah man don't give up!!! Excellent point is the fact that you have a rust free body to start with!!! I can only dream of that! And just because you are not a expert mechanic shouldn't stop you! It was just a fluke, it probably is just a little bad luck, and believe me I bet everyone on this board has had some of this! Just take a breather and tackle it again later! And I know that there are people that would be willing to give you a hand, because they have said so! I would if I was closer! But don't give up...Please! We all get frustrated with our cars but don't let it end your obsession with subys!
  10. Yeah the undercoating eventually cracks or the surface that it is sprayed on...whether from the factory or yourself...wasn't prepared properly and what you can't see is that there are pockets under the undercoating which with age allows water and dirt to find a way into those areas! When this happens it rusts terribly! My Brat has been oiled on every seam, crack, crevace, hole, and then some every year at least once a year for the last 10 years and I strongly believe that that is why I have one of the very, very, very few old subarus that aren't completely rusted out in Maine! I use NAPA brand chain and cable lube. It spreads out and into the metal and repels moisture!
  11. I say that your alternator is failing
  12. Alright I'm jealous why don't you all come out to Maine so that I can go too!
  13. Yeah thanks! When I first registered it did not give me all of the fields to fill out!? I dunno why but thanks for fixing it!
  14. I signed up too and activated it from the link in my e-mail but when I try to sign in it says that i'm using the wrong username or password. I dunno why but it does! Any ideas? I figured that it just didn't work so I tried registering again and it said that I couldn't use my username and password because it was already in use but I still can't log in!? please help!
  15. Yeah same here...most of them just don't appreciate a classic subaru!! Oh well, everyone else hangs out their window to show their appreciation. You hardly see any old subarus in Maine!
  16. Beautiful Brat! I'm jealous! Nice find!!! Yeah get whatever you can from SJRlift.com he's the way to go! And yes oil the bottom and wash often!! Good luck!
  17. Just let us know what we have to do to join and what its gonna be all about! Looking forward to it!
  18. Besides the wiring that is visible on the back of the tank..where would I look...any suggestions?! Thanks
  19. Sorry to hear about that! But don't give up! Find out what went wrong! I have a motor as well that I would probably sell fairly cheap, it's my spare but I feel for ya!! So let me know if you're interested! Just don't give up on it!!
  20. It's funny you say that All the WRX owners wave to me in mine too!
  21. Can someone post pics please!?! I've never seen one!
  22. Hey does anyone have a gas gauge sending unit? I think thats what its called?! It mounts at the back of the tank. My gas gauge doesn't work and I'm pretty sure thats the reason
  23. Yes wash often and while the car is dry..oil it. I use NAPA brand chain and cable lube. It actually soaks into the metal and spreads! Spray it into all holes on the bottom and all from the top...any you can find! unscrew the trim pieces on the rocker panels...under the door, and spray in there. And any seams that you can find as well. Mine has been oiled like this for ten yrs now and if it hadn't I know it would have ended up like all the other old subarus in Maine....Piles of rust!!! Some people also use linseed oil and cover the whole bottom of the car with it. And my uncle still sprays a fine coat of used motor oil on the bottom of his. Good Luck and nice find!!
  24. i have a y-pipe for it...its a factory one
