  1. Should work great. I cringe looking at all the vids where I see those y pipes hanging up on stuff.
  2. There's a really rag tag gl wagon for sale down the road so I stopped to take a look. It had 2 really well done cup holders screwed into the dash made of #10 awg copper wire. They looked good and worked well [i checked with my own to go cup I happened to have with me]. Probly end up installing some in my car too. I'll see if I can get some pics before it sells.
  3. Kind of what I was getting at. HP is worthless, torque[specifically at idle] is what you need with the gearing too. I've only wheeled the turbo until recently when I started wheelin' the spfi I bought. Great torque off the line, very impressed. I hope to have the spfi block&pistons/turbo hybrid in the car by the end of Oct. Hhmm more torque.
  4. 3.90 with the low range. When the house on Van Isl sells[sept 30th closing date wahoo!] I'm going to sort out some lower gearing. 4.1's or 4.44's if I can stuff them in the leone box.
  5. You mean off idle/low rpm's right? Cause I've got over that and then some but it's at 2500rpm, problem is there's only about half that off the line. The SPFI block will help alot but like you said it's the gears.
  6. Subes with the stock drivetrain don't crawl they jog. Mines a turbo, the only drawback I've found is that in technical sections on inclined rock the gearing coupled with the lower compression you have to ride the clutch a bit from a dead stop. Not a big deal once or twice but after that you start to have a bit of clutch slip from heat. I've got a SPFI block ready to go with a turbo setup on it and this will be much better. But the gearing is still a prob. for all of us. Scott I will ring you when I'm coming down to Victoria next and maybe I could meet you at the ferry. Corey [bushbasher] has a wicked acerage with tons of huge rock bluffs and old road bed maybe we could wheel there? I could head to the US too.
  7. Grab a small spring from a hardware store maybe 2" x1/4-3/8" stretch one end over the arm off the wastegate an the other over the oil feed line to your turbo. Depending on the size and tension of the spring you'll be able to boost anywhere from 9-14 psi. Do some searching and make sure you are aware of the negative side to overboosting.
  8. 5spd 3.9 is the better for fuel economy. Run a quality synthetic in the trannie and motor.
  9. There's a guy who's on ausubaru that's done it and one who's about to. 411 into leone gearbox is alright. 4.44's need grinding and some other shim work from what I've read. Sorry I'm at work and can't remember my password to ausubaru otherwise I'd provide a link. Look under conversions. you must be registered to view.
  10. I avoid any questionable offroading areas/locales like the plague. We just lost a battle to save on old coal mine site that for decades has been an unsanctioned off road park on public land. It's now a heritage site. The really sick thing about it is that 60 years ago the only heritage features were burnt down to the ground after forcing the remaining chinese settlers and miners to leave sending them to internment camps on the mainland. All their possesions were siezed and auctioned off. Some heritage site I saw no mention of those facts on the nice artsy signs all around. So yeah always wheel as though you are being watched because your actions can cost access to other areas. If things continue to go the way they are around here the only places left to go will be private parks and areas on public land that take 4 hours just to get to.

    Gears

4.44's are fairly common. Most are from people who sell their trannies they have left over from JDM imports. 4.44 gives you a 16% lower gear ratio overall so you could run 27's and have almost stock gearing.
  12. Idle seems a bit low, I'm between 1 and 3 at idle and just under 6 at cruise[3500 rpm], but that's with 15/50 synthetic.
  13. I reccomend just grabbing a used one from somewhere, they can be a real bugger to pull apart. A good conditon used one can be had for less than a rebuild kit with less screwin around too.
  14. Maybe an old set of VW planetary hubs could be retroed'? Pre 67 buses I think.
  15. If only we could get the Japanese STI spec Forester. 380+ lb/ft of torque at 2800 rpm and 390+ hp. In LHD form of course...
  16. A 9.5:1 set of pistons with turbo heads puts out close to the same torque as an spfi block/heads. I want lower gears so I can go easy on the clutch in technical sections and have closer ratio's in town. Torque's great and all but it's worthless if your gear ratio's 22% over[29's] with only a 1.6 reduction.
  17. ?? What do you mean? I'd like to stay with the 82t untill I get a 4wd sedan to put the go fast stuff into. EJ maybe so I could mod the trannie for the 4.44's easier. another 50lb's of torque isn't going to help much, Yeah I could continue to flog the snot out of my car flailing through stuff with the ratio's I've got but fixing/replacing parts gets old. Most times 4 lo just isn't slo enough. If I can't sort out some gearing then I might be looking at an ej swap, but at that point I might as well lift a forester and just deal with the wagon's 22% over gearing
  18. Cheers, that helped a bit. I'm going to post there and see if anyone can give me the specifics
  19. So... I've checked out a few other forums and importers websites and it seems that there's a few around. Does anyone have any good suggestions/references for importers, how about buying from other forums like Nasoic? Better yet anyone here have some 4.44's ?
  20. OK I'm going to order, from either an importer or somebody who's bought an imported jdm forester/wrx with the 4.44's, 4.44 trannie and rear diff, it seems some came with a center diff.I don't really want a center diff so I'll have to keep an eye on that #'s wise. If it can't be done then back up for sale they go.
  21. Inspiring! that stock forester looks kinda wussy beside yours lol.
  22. Wow, I've read alot of threads like this kinda making me think twice about ordering a trannie with an LSD installed. At least not cash up front anyways.
