Benefit(s) of larger Throttle Body
WJM replied to Marck's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
My reasoning for the larger TB comes from several angles.... 1st one I noticed one day that them chamber in the spyder is huge compared to the size of the TB...odd me tought... ALL EJ engines have a TB as big as the XT6...hmmm...SUBARU must have had a really good reason for this. The WRX IC intake side is the same size as the turbo out...and the IC out is the same size as the TB....go figure! (must ahve something to do with the higher density of air after cooling for the TB/IC exit to be the same size) TWE has produced a TB even larger than the stock SUBARU units... Then I was thinking...hot thin air is rushed from the turbo to the IC...cools...and then flows out the IC...but then has to compress again to fit thru the TB...that doesnt seem right...so why not make it the same size? It may not increase the PRESSURE of the manifold...but it will increase the VOLUME of air which enters the intake manifold. With the cams in the engine this should yeild a much higher engine output. More air in=more power out. Plus, since it turbo, more air in=more air out to spin the turbo. Since Ive got TWE peices to go on....exponential fuction. The only restrictions left to deal with is the teeny turbo, air flow meter/intake, Spyder legs and its "feet" (heads). I am hoping to see 200 hp at a min from all this stuff. If I cant get 200 at this point, I will be sourly dissapointed...as I put alot of $ into the effort.... -
Oh no....guess I will need a TD04 to keep up with you guys now... Oh wait! Ive got other engine goodies ot take care of the need for big tuhbo!

Pulling codes question again

if you look under the steering colum, there will be the RED LED from the ECU...it will blink....long for uncrements of 10, and short for increments of 1. Like, 2 long and 4 short is code 23. I have never had to plug anything in for it to spit codes...just turn the ignition on and wait to see what the LED blinks. THen look it up on the chart and go...oh...i need to look into that i guess. thats how i do it on my RX's and GL-10.... -
Werid...again, check the dizy stuff....I woudl personall try another disty. is this a 5spd with the OHC engine in it the EA82? If so, then it IS an 85 model.

Front half-shaft removal - AWD
WJM replied to DPDISXR4Ti's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
4WD is engaged manually by user. Full Time 4WD is constantly in a 4WD mode, but in order for it to be true 4WD, the center diff must be locked...manually by user ofcourse. All Wheel Drive delivers power to all 4 wheels all the time via Viscous coupling center diff. Some have LSD rear, or Viscous LSD rear. STi's have a type of front LSD...no other SUBARU models here came with any sort of LSD front. The autos are pretty much the same way...4WD=engage manually. FT4WD=clutchpack in center controlling rear power. AWD=almost same as FT4WD, but better system. -
subspeed? Nope...hes not making anything anymore if you read all the fine lines... Its up to me now...

All i can say is.....*silence* Thats right, speachless. ALL of them are DONE and ready to ship. Folgers Check should be arriving there this week....then the Headers/DPs will be shipped to the dealer. Mine will be here just in time for me to install them and drive to Atlanta for the Challenge...

Mods to come in the next few days...
WJM replied to WJM's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
OMG! SO much interest in this! Update.... The spyder intake wiring is comming together nicely...just two connectors to sort out, and the wiring for it is done. The new fuel system components are here, and all I need to do is put the fuel distribution block together and run lines, mount it, and its done. TWE Header and DP is on the way! Brakes: WRX calipers wont bolt on...caliper float system is not quite the same...but bolt up positions are almost 100% identical....since I decided not to fudge with fabbing and i am pressed for time, I simply install the EBC green stuff pads and put the stock caliper back on. EBC Green pads for 90-94 Legacy with 14" wheels WILL fit like they are ment to be there in our EA82 front brakes. Old cams are still in....going to swap out stock cams for 260 Delta's tomorrow. The Khumo V700 215/50/13 tires WILL fit the stock SUBARU alloy rims (5.5 wide EA82 series) and yes, ONE person and an older style tire machine can mount these tires with out breaking a sweat. The Addco swaybar applications were incorrect...so I will be staying with the XT6 4WD 20MM rear bar, and installing an XT6 2WD 19MM front one inplace of the stock 18MM one...might make a little bit of difference. The GC8 Power steering rack bushings are here, installing tomorrow. (all PS racks except STi RA are supposed to be the same in bushing size) And...now its time for food. -
No...the XT6 doent have the thro.cable bracket on the TB...My IC is RIGHT THERE like the WRX/STi's have them, and the XT6 TB throttle stuff is a big mess of springs and junk...since I have two of them, i tried to go back to simpleness like the 86 non spyders have...but its all backwards and wont work...so I pulled out the stock one and left it alone...well, modd'ed the stuff to it would get FULL WOT instead of 90% of it...and i odnt think its going to hurt to move the IC back 1.5" or so...I hope no more than that...or my hood scoop stuff will look like crap...big gaps and not 100% air to IC... more to come tomorrow...tired and hungry...but still daylight... :-\

Install a knock sensor, ALL MPFI engines are supposed to have one, as I have seen them on all of them. Even an 85 DL XT had one.

Ok...now the plenum chamber is bored...and it looks like CRAP. But the edges are smooth....but the TB gasket surface on the plenum is f'ed up bad....good thing I've got some ultra copper RTV type stuff to fill the gaps...
-
All I can say is that it is t3h difficult y0. The throttle cable routing is going to be a chore...as the IC/BOV is in the way...I am going to ahve to move the IC back it looks, becuase the linkage for hte throttle plate is going to interfere with the BOV...wiring the TPS should be easy tho... the mose difficult part will be bolting the XT6TB to the spyder intake....as the bolt spacing is much wider, and ofcourse the hole needs to be dremmeled out to accomodate the large opening in the TB... Maybe I will rotate the TB like Tex did...the only issue is hood clearance... ok, im off to put my race tires on wheels now me thinks.

really, the only other option is to go custom. For Koni fully adjustable height coilovers, separately adjustable bound and rebound is around $2,500. Or...do the 5 lug conversion and buy the new legacy GT coil overs and thats 3k+ total invested....

the only thing that will bolt right on that is aftermarket and handle what you want is....well, nothing really....KYB GR2's are great, but the fronts only come for the 2WD, so the struts are shorter than the 4WD considerably...you will loose front end ground clearance. Go with the stock RX units. They are more than 2X stiffer than the stock non-RX items, and have 4WD ground clearence. If you can, find the RX front springs and 4WD wagon rear springs to put on the RX struts. That will give you a nice ride and just a tad (1/2 inch at MOST) over stock 4WD ground clearance. Here is the SUBARU Part numbers for the R/L front struts for RX: 21520GA510 (RF) 21520GA520 (LF) And the rears...get TWO of this P/N: 21007GA771 (3 door coupe) or 21022GA752 (4D sedan)

KYB GR2's are the best you can buy for the $! I know...i use them on my autocross beast...

Coolness! Just need to do fascias and paint it up! Id SERIOUSLY be interested in a fiberglass hood (made so i can fit a 2004 STi scoop on the center hump) and RX fenders! Also....think you can have my bushings ready and to me by wed....I'll pay $!

So i hear that some one on there got Matt's (matt who was in florida now in NC, a mod in the SE NASIOC forum) brat....fess up...who was it....? Either way, congrats! I hear the AC works "good" for FL hottness....

Mine is catless and stright pipe all the way....2.5"...and....well...its still quiet. I dont know how. Quiet meaning that an N/A subaru with borla header, high flow cat and a stromung cat back is 4x louder.
