Oil Pressure gauge drop-car running fine???
ShawnW replied to jxavierf's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Oil sending unit, look for the closest wire to your oil filter. -
Yahoo wont let you put the photos right into here. Find the Photo Gallery link on USMB here in Grey text far right, go there and upload your photos directly. Email if you have problems, if you want to email the actual photos I will upload them in your name too just be sure to tell me what your USMB name is in the email so I dont have to dig around.

what part is this????
ShawnW replied to dragonwingsubaru's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Its a Loyale transmission mount. They are pretty rare I think thats a 1 year only part even. They went to that after having such success with the Legacy ones that are almost the same only bigger. -
There should be seals on all of them.

trouble deciding... keep which car? brat or imp
ShawnW replied to Ratty2Austin's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Rent a little trailer when you need to haul it, or anything really. Im thinking of getting rid of my Toyota that is bulletproof and replacing it with a small cargo trailer that the Vanagon, Outback or my Wagon could pull. one less vehicle to maintain and one less non Subaru around the driveway. Probably won't happen though its been too handy. -
Theres always RooBuilders. www.ccrengines.com/roobuilders But if Skip will do it free thats an offer I wouldnt refuse. The Carter-Weber kit I bought years ago at the dealer for my 84 GL wagon was nearly $100 and I paid a friend to rebuild it almost $50, which is over half of what Kerry gets and then its professionally done. Im with you on the recipe logic, when it comes to Carbs if its more than a 1 cyl engine carbie I wont touch it. Ill rebuild an engine or trans but the carbs...I just dont like all the little pieces. Someday though, when fuel injection isn't an option for me on a project. My friend was an auto tech student in his 1st term so it probably wasnt quite as good as one Skip would do by any means. My vote is for Skip on this but if you didnt have Skip's help Roobuilders prices are a great deal.

Im pretty sure 2 children could fit, not adults but oh well. At least it could be done in a pinch. Its not like the Subaru Brat jumpseats fit a typical American that well. As for the ugly factor, im pretty sure theres a high percentage of people out there that think just about every Subaru ever made is kindof ugly but the cool features are what makes a Subaru a vehicle to have. Justy, XT, Loyale, Brat...if you say Im not buying one cuz they are ugly thats just silly they are too cool in other ways to make the ugly part a priority. They aren't huge but they seem very wide compared to other Subaru's, kindof like an SVX seems. Thats the closest car I can come to comparing it to really, an SVX SUV crossover vehicle, like taking an SVX and an Outback and combining the features. I won't ever buy one because I have seen what happens to an EZ30 engine when its timing chain breaks or the oil pump needs resealed.

Id keep the Impreza. It seems a shame to take a Brat to salt country where the Impreza isn't as rare. The wagon functions of the impreza will even out with the Brat on most things, and the more modern motor and stereo are very nice to have. Travelling between WA and MN (in case you have to) will be nicer in an Impreza too. -
Finally - motor is in a runs great.

What was 4 months wait? The delivery or just you having time to install? I hope it wasnt the delivery that seems quite rediculous. -
I get tired of seeing all the people that take the easy way out and buy their way to the trail instead of creating their own monster. I can respect any rig that its obvious they didnt just toss money at it, they put time, blood, and sweat into it as well. Obviously anybody that goes about it with a Subaru is going to go this route, certainly not the easy way, but an uphill battle against your non subaru peers and the terrain to make your Subaru into a true off roader.

take the rocker assembly off so its not in your way.

4wd shifter bounces on throttle... why?
ShawnW replied to critical_max's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Thats the dual range selector lever. its normal to be able to roll it 30 degrees like that. I bet your problem is further back just below where the actual shift lever is on the underside of the car. Look for loose bolts there. ALso, depending on how much it bounces it may be transmission mounts worn. Look for those on the side fo the trans, one probably has a lot of rubber left and the other doesnt (on each side.) -
I bet its the oil pump then. Stream get faster when you rev the engine? If you do the timing belt service and replace or reseal the oil pump you could just drive it.

JB weld won't hold it, sorry. Heat it with a Mapp gas or Propane torch, then smack the end where its broken off with a punch, and if you have any part of the end showing grab it with vise grips and turn it (helps to figure out how tight before heating btw). If you dont, get the drill out and put a left hand drill bit in there while its hot. Otherwise get a new knuckle and press new wheel bearing in.

On the photo above is my VW Vanagon/Subaru Legacy wiring harness. This is every wire that makes the engine run. The four bright yellow ones closest to you go to the ECU but see the green plugs right below them? Those two should not be plugged together normally. Same with 2 black ones that are 1 pin connector type. When plugged in one will show codes while driving, the other will only show them parked. Dont remember which one but I think the green ones are for drive mode.

Fits on a Uhaul. How many quarts of oil does it leak in 1000 miles?
-
Make sure you have diagnosed the problem before you have come to a conclusion and get mad at Subaru before you take it to the Subaru dealer or subaru independent specialist for a proper diagnosis. This car needs to be plugged into a Select Monitor, a Subaru specific tool. When you first start the car is the AT OIL TEMP light flashing 5 times and then shutting off? If so you have a trouble code in the trans. More than likely it will tell the mechanic who can tell you what is wrong with it very quickly. Second, most SUBARU transmission failures can be fixed without rebuilding the actual transmission. There are alot of valve body problems and solenoids that can be changed out by dropping the pan and doing some work in there or by replacing the torque converter......The number one problem with Subaru transmissions since the first 4eat trans.
